2 Samuel 10

1 Så hendte det at Ammons barns konge døde, og Hanun, hans sønn, blev konge i hans sted.

And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of 'Ammon died, and Chanun his son reigned in his stead.

2 Da sa David: Jeg vil vise Hanun, Nahas' sønn, vennskap, likesom hans far viste mig vennskap. Og David sendte nogen av sine tjenere for å trøste ham i hans sorg over sin far. Så kom da Davids tjenere til Ammons barns land.

Then said David, I will show kindness unto Chanun the son of Nachash, as his father showed me kindness. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came unto the land of the children of 'Ammon.

3 Da sa Ammons barns høvdinger til Hanun, sin herre: Tror du det er for å ære din far at David har sendt folk som skal trøste dig? Mon det ikke heller er for å utforske byen og utspeide den og så ødelegge den at David har sendt sine tjenere til dig?

And the princes of the children of 'Ammon said unto Chanun their Lord, Doth David honor thy father in thy eyes, that he hath sent comforters unto thee! hath David not sent his servants unto thee, in order to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

4 Da tok Hanun Davids tjenere og raket av halvdelen av deres skjegg og skar av deres klær midt på like til setet og lot dem så fare.

Chanun thereupon took David's servants, and shaved off the one-half of their beard, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

5 Da dette blev meldt David, sendte han folk som skulde møte mennene, for de var grovelig vanæret; og kongen lot si: Bli i Jeriko til eders skjegg er vokset ut igjen, og kom så tilbake!

When they told it unto David, he sent [persons] to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed; and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beard be grown, and then return.

6 Da nu Ammons barn så at de hadde gjort sig forhatt hos David, sendte de bud og leide syrerne fra Bet-Rehob og syrerne fra Soba, tyve tusen mann fotfolk, og kongen i Ma'aka med tusen mann og tolv tusen mann fra Tob.

And when the children of 'Ammon saw that they were become in bad odor with David, the children of 'Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rechob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand men on foot, and the king of Ma'achah with a thousand men, and of the people of Tob twelve thousand men.

7 Da David hørte dette, sendte han Joab avsted med hele hæren, de krigsvante menn.

And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the army, [and] the mighty men.

8 Og Ammons barn rykket ut og stilte sig i fylking foran byporten; men syrerne fra Soba og Rehob og mennene fra Tob og Ma'aka stod for sig selv på marken.

And the children of 'Ammon came out, and put themselves in battle-array at the entrance of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rechob, and the people of Tob and Ma'achah, were by themselves in the field.

9 Da Joab så at han hadde fienden mot sig både foran og bak, valgte han ut en del av alt det utvalgte mannskap i Israel og stilte dem op mot syrerne.

When now Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he selected from all the chosen men of Israel, and arrayed himself against the Syrians:

10 Men resten av folket overgav han til sin bror Abisai og stilte dem op mot Ammons barn.

And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, who arrayed himself against the children of 'Ammon.

11 Og han sa: Dersom syrerne blir mig for sterke, skal du komme mig til hjelp, og dersom Ammons barn blir dig for sterke, skal jeg komme og hjelpe dig.

And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then shalt thou bring me help; but if the children of 'Ammon be too strong for thee, then will I go to help thee.

12 Vær modig, og la oss vise oss modige i striden for vårt folk og for vår Guds byer, så får Herren gjøre hvad som er godt i hans øine!

Be strong, and let us strengthen ourselves in behalf of our people, and in behalf of the cities of our God: and may the Lord do that which seemeth good in his eyes.

13 Så rykket Joab frem med sine folk til strid mot syrerne, og de flyktet for ham.

And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians; and they fled from before him.

14 Og da Ammons barn så at syrerne flyktet, så flyktet også de for Abisai og drog sig inn i byen. Da vendte Joab tilbake fra striden mot Ammons barn og kom til Jerusalem.

And when the children of 'Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then did they also fly before Abishai, and entered into the city. Joab then returned from the children of 'Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

15 Da syrerne så at de var blitt slått av Israel, samlet de sig igjen.

And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves altogether.

16 Og Hadadeser sendte bud at de syrere som bodde på hin side av elven, skulde rykke ut; de kom til Helam, og Sobak, høvdingen over Hadadesers hær, førte dem.

And Hadar'ezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river, and they came to Chelam; and Shobach the captain of the army of Hadar'ezer went before them.

17 Da dette blev meldt David, samlet han hele Israel og gikk over Jordan og kom til Helam; og syrerne stilte sig op mot David og stred mot ham.

And when it was told to David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over the Jordan, and came to Chelam. And the Syrians set themselves in battle-array against David, and fought with him.

18 Men syrerne flyktet for Israel, og David drepte blandt syrerne mannskapet på syv hundre vogner og firti tusen hestfolk, og Sobak, deres hærfører, såret han, så han døde der.

And the Syrians fled from before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians [the men] of seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen; and Shobach also the captain of their army he smote, and he died there.

19 Og da alle kongene som stod under Hadadeser, så at de var blitt slått av Israel, gjorde de fred med Israel og blev deres tjenere; og syrerne vågde ikke å hjelpe Ammons barn mere.

And when all the kings, the vassals to Hadar'ezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them: and the Syrians feared to help the children of 'Ammon any more.
