1 Na'aman, den syriske konges hærfører, hadde meget å si hos sin herre og var høit aktet, for ved ham hadde Herren gitt Syria seier; han var en veldig krigsmann, men spedalsk.

Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honorable, because by him Jehovah had given victory to Syria. He was also a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.

2 Syrerne hadde engang gjort et herjetog og bortført en liten pike som fange fra Israels land; og hun tjente nu hos Na'amans hustru.

And the Syrians had gone out in bands, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maiden, and she waited on Naaman's wife.

3 Hun sa til sin frue: Bare min herre var hos profeten i Samaria! Da skulde nok han fri ham fra hans spedalskhet.

And she said to her mistress, Would that my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would heal him of his leprosy.

4 Na'aman gikk inn til sin herre og fortalte ham det og sa: Så og så har piken fra Israels land sagt.

And a man went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and thus said the maiden who is of the land of Israel.

5 Da sa kongen i Syria: Dra dit, så vil jeg sende et brev til Israels konge. Han drog avsted og tok med sig ti talenter sølv og seks tusen sekel gull og ti festklædninger.

And the king of Syria said, Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment.

6 Han overgav brevet til Israels konge, og i det stod det: Når nu dette brev kommer til dig, så vil du se at jeg har sendt min tjener Na'aman til dig, forat du skal fri ham fra hans spedalskhet.

And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, And now when this letter has come to thee, behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to thee that thou may heal him of his leprosy.

7 Da Israels konge hadde lest brevet, sønderrev han sine klær og sa: Er jeg Gud, så jeg kan døde og gjøre levende, siden han sender bud til mig og vil at jeg skal fri en mann fra hans spedalskhet? Nu ser I vel grant at han søker en leilighet til strid med mig.

And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the letter, that he tore his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man sends to me to heal a man of his leprosy? But consider, I pray you, and see how he seeks a quarrel against me.

8 Men da Elisa, den Guds mann, hørte at Israels konge hadde sønderrevet sine klær, sendte han bud til kongen og lot si: Hvorfor har du sønderrevet dine klær? La ham komme til mig! Så skal han kjenne at der er en profet i Israel.

And it was so, when Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Why have thou torn thy clothes? Let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.

9 Så kom Na'aman med sine hester og sin vogn og holdt ved døren til Elisas hus.

So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariots, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha.

10 Og Elisa sendte et bud ut til ham og lot si: Gå og bad dig syv ganger i Jordan! Så skal ditt kjøtt bli friskt igjen, og du skal bli ren.

And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shall be clean.

11 Da blev Na'aman vred og drog bort og sa: Jeg tenkte at han vilde komme ut til mig og stå frem og påkalle Herrens, sin Guds navn og føre sin hånd frem og tilbake over det syke sted og ta bort spedalskheten.

But Naaman was angry, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought he will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of Jehovah his God, and wave his hand over the place, and heal the leper.

12 Er ikke elvene ved Damaskus, Abana og Parpar, bedre enn alle Israels vann? Kunde jeg ikke bade mig i dem og bli ren? Og han vendte om og drog bort i vrede.

Are not Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? May I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

13 Men hans tjenere trådte frem og talte til ham og sa: Min far! Dersom profeten hadde pålagt dig noget svært, vilde du da ikke ha gjort det? Hvor meget mere når han bare sier til dig: Bad dig, så skal du bli ren!

And his servants came near, and spoke to him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, would thou not have done it? How much rather then, when he says to thee, Wash, and be clean?

14 Da drog han ned og dukket sig syv ganger i Jordan efter den Guds manns ord; og hans kjøtt blev friskt som på en liten gutt, og han blev ren.

Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God. And his flesh came again like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

15 Og han vendte tilbake til den Guds mann med hele sitt følge, og da han kom dit, trådte han frem for ham og sa: Nu vet jeg at det ikke er nogen Gud på hele jorden uten i Israel; sa ta nu imot en gave av din tjener!

And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him. And he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel. Now therefore, I pray thee, take a present from thy servant.

16 Men han sa: Så sant Herren lever, han hvis tjener jeg er: Jeg tar ikke imot noget. Og han bad ham inntrengende om å ta imot, men han vilde ikke.

But he said, As Jehovah lives, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it, but he refused.

17 Da sa Na'aman: Siden du ikke vil, så la dog din tjener få så meget jord som et par mulesler kan bære! For din tjener vil ikke mere ofre brennoffer eller slaktoffer til andre guder, men til Herren alene.

And Naaman said, If not, yet, I pray thee, let there be given to thy servant two mules' burden of dirt, for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice to other gods, but to Jehovah.

18 Men én ting tilgi Herren din tjener: Når min herre går inn Rimmons hus for å tilbede der, og han støtter sig til min hånd, og jeg kaster mig ned der i Rimmons hus, så la Herren din tjener få tilgivelse for dette at jeg kaster mig ned i Rimmons hus!

In this thing Jehovah pardon thy servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leans on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, Jehovah pardon thy servant in this thing.

19 Han svarte ham: Dra bort i fred! Så drog han fra ham, men da han var kommet et stykke på veien,

And he said to him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way.

20 da tenkte Gehasi, den Guds mann Elisas dreng: Min herre har spart denne syrer Na'aman og ikke tatt imot av ham det han hadde hatt med sig; så sant Herren lever, vil jeg springe efter ham og få noget av ham.

But Gehazi the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master has spared this Naaman the Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought. As Jehovah lives, I will run after him, and take something from him.

21 Så skyndte Gehasi sig efter Na'aman; og da Na'aman så en springe efter ham, steg han i hast ned av vognen og gikk ham i møte og sa: Står alt vel til?

So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he alighted from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well?

22 Han sa: Ja, men min herre har sendt mig og lar si: Just nu er det kommet to unge menn til mig fra Efra'im-fjellene, to av profetenes disipler; gi dem en talent sølv og to festklædninger!

And he said, All is well. My master has sent me, saying, Behold, even now there come to me from the hill-country of Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets. Give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of raiment.

23 Na'aman svarte: Vær så snild og ta to talenter! Og han bad ham inntrengende og knyttet to talenter sølv inn i to punger og tok to festklædninger og overgav det til to av sine drenger, og de bar det foran ham;

And Naaman said, Be pleased to take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of raiment, and laid them upon two of his servants, and they bore them before him.

24 men da han kom til bakken, tok han det av deres hånd og gjemte det i huset, og han bad farvel med mennene, og de drog sin vei.

And when he came to the hill, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house, and he let the men go, and they departed.

25 Og selv gikk han inn og trådte frem for sin herre. Da spurte Elisa ham: Hvor kommer du fra, Gehasi? Han svarte: Din tjener har ikke vært noget sted.

But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said to him, From where did thou come, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went nowhere.

26 Men han sa til ham: Var jeg ikke til stede i ånden da mannen vendte om fra sin vogn og gikk dig i møte? Er det nu tid til å ta imot sølv og få sig klær og oljetrær og vingårder og småfe og storfe og tjenere og tjenestepiker?

And he said to him, Did not my heart go with thee when the man turned from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards and vineyards, and sheep and oxen, and men-servants and maid-servants?

27 Derfor skal Na'amans spedalskhet henge ved dig og ved din ætt til evig tid. Så gikk han ut fra ham og var spedalsk, hvit som sne.

The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cling to thee, and to thy seed forever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.
