1 Samuels 12

1 Da sa Samuel til hele Israel: Nu har jeg lydt eder i alt hvad I har sagt til mig, og satt en konge over eder.

Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have listened to your voice in all that you said to me, and have made a king over you.

2 Sa har I nu kongen til fører for eder; men jeg er gammel og grå, så I nu har mine sønner iblandt eder. Jeg har vært fører for eder fra min ungdom like til denne dag.

Now, behold, the king walks before you. I am old and grey-headed. Behold, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my youth to this day.

3 Her står jeg! Vidne nu mot mig for Herren og for hans salvede: Er det nogen jeg har fratatt hans okse eller hans asen? Er det nogen jeg har gjort urett mot eller undertrykt? Er det nogen jeg har tatt imot gaver av, så jeg skulde lukke mine øine til for noget? Om så er, vil jeg gi eder vederlag for det.

Here I am. Witness against me before the LORD and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Of whose hand have I taken a bribe to make me blind my eyes? I will restore it to you.”

4 De svarte: Du har ikke gjort urett mot oss og ikke undertrykt oss og ikke tatt imot noget av nogen.

They said, “You have not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither have you taken anything from anyone’s hand.”

5 Da sa han til dem: Herren er vidne mot eder, og hans salvede er vidne på denne dag at I ikke har funnet noget hos mig. Folket svarte: Ja, han er vidne.

He said to them, “The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness today, that you have not found anything in my hand.” They said, “He is witness.”

6 Da sa Samuel til folket: Ja, Herren er vidne, han som lot Moses og Aron stå frem, og som førte eders fedre op fra Egyptens land.

Samuel said to the people, “It is the LORD who appointed Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.

7 Kom nu frem her, så vil jeg gå i rette med eder for Herrens åsyn om alle Herrens rettferdige gjerninger som han har gjort mot eder og eders fedre.

Now therefore stand still, that I may plead with you before the LORD concerning all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.

8 Da Jakob var kommet til Egypten, ropte eders fedre til Herren, og Herren sendte Moses og Aron, og de førte eders fedre ut av Egypten og lot dem bosette sig i dette land.

“When Jacob had come into Egypt, and your fathers cried to the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your fathers out of Egypt, and made them to dwell in this place.

9 Men de glemte Herren sin Gud, og han solgte dem i Siseras, Hasors hærførers hånd og i filistrenes hånd og i Moabs konges hånd; alle disse stred imot dem.

But they forgot the LORD their God; and he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the army of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab; and they fought against them.

10 Da ropte de til Herren og sa: Vi har syndet! Vi har forlatt Herren og tjent Ba'alene og Astarte-billedene; men redd oss nu av våre fienders hånd, så vil vi tjene dig!

They cried to the LORD, and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD and have served the Baals and the Ashtaroth; but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve you.’

11 Så sendte Herren Jerubba'al og Bedan og Jefta og Samuel og reddet eder av eders fienders hånd rundt omkring, så I kunde bo trygt.

The LORD sent Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you lived in safety.

12 Men da I så at Nahas, Ammons barns konge, kom imot eder, sa I til mig: Nei, en konge skal råde over oss - enda Herren eders Gud var eders konge.

“When you saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said to me, ‘No, but a king shall reign over us,’ when the LORD your God was your king.

13 Her er nu kongen som I har valgt - som I har bedt om; Herren har satt en konge over eder.

Now therefore see the king whom you have chosen and whom you have asked for. Behold, the LORD has set a king over you.

14 Dersom I nu frykter Herren og tjener ham og lyder ham og ikke er gjenstridige mot Herrens ord, men følger Herren eders Gud, både I og kongen som råder over eder så skal Herren være med eder.

If you will fear the LORD, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then both you and also the king who reigns over you are followers of the LORD your God.

15 Men dersom I ikke lyder Herren, men er gjenstridige mot Herrens ord, så skal Herrens hånd være mot eder som mot eders fedre.

But if you will not listen to the LORD’s voice, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then the LORD’s hand will be against you, as it was against your fathers.

16 Kom da nu frem og se den store gjerning som Herren vil gjøre for eders øine!

“Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes.

17 Er det ikke nu hvetehøstens tid? Jeg vil rope til Herren og han skal sende torden og regn. Kjenn da og se at eders ondskap er stor, den som I har gjort for Herrens øine ved å kreve en konge!

Isn’t it wheat harvest today? I will call to the LORD, that he may send thunder and rain; and you will know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the LORD’s sight, in asking for a king.”

18 Så ropte Samuel til Herren, og samme dag sendte Herren torden og regn; da blev alt folket grepet av stor frykt for Herren og for Samuel.

So Samuel called to the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day. Then all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.

19 Og alt folket sa til Samuel: Bed for dine tjenere til Herren din Gud, så vi ikke skal dø fordi vi til alle våre andre synder har lagt den misgjerning å kreve en konge!

All the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the LORD your God, that we not die; for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for a king.”

20 Da sa Samuel til folket: Frykt ikke! I har gjort alt dette onde; men vik nu bare ikke fra Herren, men tjen Herren av hele eders hjerte!

Samuel said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. You have indeed done all this evil; yet don’t turn away from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.

21 Vik ikke av! For da måtte I følge de tomme avguder, som ikke kan gagne og ikke redde, fordi de er bare tomhet.

Don’t turn away to go after vain things which can’t profit or deliver, for they are vain.

22 For Herren vil for sitt store navns skyld ikke forlate sitt folk, siden Herren har funnet for godt å gjøre eder til sitt folk.

For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name’s sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you a people for himself.

23 Men jeg - det være langt fra mig å synde mot Herren ved å holde op med å bede for eder; og jeg vil lære eder den gode og rette vei.

Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and the right way.

24 Frykt bare Herren og tjen ham i sannhet, av hele eders hjerte! Se hvor store ting han har gjort for eder!

Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things he has done for you.

25 Men gjør I det som ondt er, da skal både I og eders konge bli bortrykket.

But if you keep doing evil, you will be consumed, both you and your king.”
