< UMathewu 14 >

1 Ngalesosikhathi uHerodi umtetrarki wezwa indumela kaJesu,
In that time, Herod the Tetrarch heard the news about Jesus.
2 wasesithi ezincekwini zakhe: Lo nguJohane uMbhabhathizi; yena uvukile kwabafileyo, kungakho-ke imisebenzi yamandla isebenza kuye.
And he said to his servants: “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead, and that is why miracles are at work in him.”
3 Ngoba uHerodi wayembambile uJohane wambopha wamfaka entolongweni, ngenxa kaHerodiyasi umkaFiliphu umfowabo;
For Herod had apprehended John, and bound him, and put him in prison, because of Herodias, the wife of his brother.
4 ngoba uJohane wayethe kuye: Kawuvunyelwa ukuba laye.
For John was telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
5 Njalo efuna ukumbulala, wesaba ixuku, ngoba lalimphatha njengomprofethi.
And though he wanted to kill him, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet.
6 Kodwa kwathi kugcinwa usuku lokuzalwa kukaHerodi, indodakazi kaHerodiyasi yagida phakathi kwabo, yamthokozisa uHerodi.
Then, on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced in their midst, and it pleased Herod.
7 Ngakho wathembisa ngesifungo ukuyinika loba yini ezayicela.
And so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask of him.
8 Kodwa yona, isilayiwe ngunina, yathi: Ngiphe lapha emganwini ikhanda likaJohane uMbhabhathizi.
But, having been advised by her mother, she said, “Give me here, on a platter, the head of John the Baptist.”
9 Inkosi yasisiba losizi, kodwa ngenxa yezifungo langalabo ababehlezi layo ekudleni yalaya ukuthi inikwe.
And the king was greatly saddened. But because of his oath, and because of those who sat at table with him, he ordered it to be given.
10 Yasithuma yamquma uJohane ikhanda entolongweni.
And he sent and beheaded John in prison.
11 Ikhanda lakhe laselilethwa ngomganu, lanikwa intombi; njalo yona yalisa kunina.
And his head was brought on a platter, and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
12 Kwasekusiza abafundi bakhe bathatha isidumbu, basingcwaba; basebesuka bambikela uJesu.
And his disciples approached and took the body, and they buried it. And arriving, they reported it to Jesus.
13 UJesu esezwile wasuka lapho ngomkhumbi waya endaweni eyinkangala eyedwa; kodwa amaxuku ekuzwa amlandela ngenyawo evela emizini.
When Jesus had heard it, he withdrew from there by boat, to a deserted place by himself. And when the crowds had heard of it, they followed him on foot from the cities.
14 UJesu esephumile wabona ixuku elikhulu, waba lesihelo ngabo, wasilisa abagulayo babo.
And going out, he saw a great multitude, and he took pity on them, and he cured their sick.
15 Kwathi sekuhlwile abafundi bakhe beza kuye, bathi: Lindawo iyinkangala, lesikhathi sesihambile; liyekele ixuku lihambe, ukuze baye emizaneni bazithengele ukudla.
And when evening had arrived, his disciples approached him, saying: “This is a deserted place, and the hour has now passed. Dismiss the crowds, so that, by going into the towns, they may buy food for themselves.”
16 Kodwa uJesu wathi kubo: Kakuswelekanga ukuthi bahambe; banikeni lina ukuthi badle.
But Jesus said to them: “They have no need to go. Give them something to eat yourselves.”
17 Kodwa bathi kuye: Kasila lapha ngaphandle kwezinkwa ezinhlanu lenhlanzi ezimbili.
They answered him, “We have nothing here, except five loaves and two fish.”
18 Wasesithi: Ziletheni lapha kimi.
He said to them, “Bring them here to me.”
19 Waselaya amaxuku ukuthi ahlale phansi etshanini, wathatha izinkwa ezinhlanu lenhlanzi ezimbili, wakhangela phezulu ezulwini, wabusisa, esezihlephule wabanika abafundi izinkwa, labafundi bapha amaxuku.
And when he had ordered the multitude to sit down upon the grass, he took the five loaves and the two fish, and gazing up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the bread to the disciples, and then the disciples to the multitudes.
20 Basebesidla bonke, basutha; badobha imvuthu ezazisele, izitsha ezigcweleyo ezilitshumi lambili.
And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the remnants: twelve baskets full of fragments.
21 Lalabo abasebedlile babengamadoda angaba zinkulungwane ezinhlanu, ngaphandle kwabesifazana labantwana.
Now the number of those who ate was five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 Njalo uJesu wahle wacindezela abafundi bakhe ukuthi bangene emkhunjini, njalo bamqalele ukuya ngaphetsheya, esayekela amaxuku ahambe.
And Jesus promptly compelled his disciples to climb into the boat, and to precede him in crossing the sea, while he dismissed the crowds.
23 Kwathi eseyekele amaxuku ahamba, wenyukela entabeni eyedwa ukuze akhuleke; kwathi sekuhlwile, wayeyedwa lapho.
And having dismissed the multitude, he ascended alone onto a mountain to pray. And when evening arrived, he was alone there.
24 Kodwa umkhumbi wawusuphakathi kolwandle, utshukunyiswa ngamagagasi; ngoba umoya wawuphambene labo.
But in the midst of the sea, the boat was being tossed about by the waves. For the wind was against them.
25 Kwathi ngesikhathi somlindo wesine wobusuku uJesu weza kubo, ehamba phezu kolwandle.
Then, in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking upon the sea.
26 Kodwa kwathi abafundi bembona ehamba phezu kolwandle bethuka, bathi: Lithonga. Basebekhala ngokwesaba.
And seeing him walking upon the sea, they were disturbed, saying: “It must be an apparition.” And they cried out, because of fear.
27 Kodwa uJesu wahle wakhuluma labo, wathi: Manini isibindi; yimi; lingesabi.
And immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying: “Have faith. It is I. Do not be afraid.”
28 UPetro wasemphendula wathi: Nkosi, uba kunguwe, ngilaya ukuthi ngize kuwe phezu kwamanzi.
Then Peter responded by saying, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you over the waters.”
29 Wasesithi: Woza. UPetro wasesehla emkhunjini wahamba phezu kwamanzi, ukuze aye kuJesu.
And he said, “Come.” And Peter, descending from the boat, walked over the water, so as to go to Jesus.
30 Kodwa ebona umoya olamandla wesaba; wathi eseqala ukutshona wakhala, wathi: Nkosi, ngisindisa!
Yet truly, seeing that the wind was strong, he was afraid. And as he began to sink, he cried out, saying: “Lord, save me.”
31 Njalo uJesu wahle welula isandla, wambamba, wathi kuye: Wena olokukholwa okuncinyane, uthandabuzelani?
And immediately Jesus extended his hand and took hold of him. And he said to him, “O little in faith, why did you doubt?”
32 Sebengenile emkhunjini, umoya wathula.
And when they had ascended into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Abasemkhunjini basebesiza bamkhonza bathi: Ngeqiniso wena uyiNdodana kaNkulunkulu.
Then those who were in the boat drew near and adored him, saying: “Truly, you are the Son of God.”
34 Kwathi sebechaphile bafika elizweni leGenesaretha.
And having crossed the sea, they arrived in the land of Genesaret.
35 Esemazi amadoda akuleyondawo athumela ilizwi kuso sonke lesosigaba esizingelezeleyo, aletha kuye bonke abagulayo.
And when the men of that place had recognized him, they sent into all that region, and they brought to him all who had maladies.
36 Basebemncenga, ukuthi bathinte nje umphetho wesembatho sakhe; njalo bonke abathintayo basiliswa.
And they petitioned him, so that they might touch even the hem of his garment. And as many as touched it were made whole.
