नीतिसूत्रे 26

1 १ उन्हाळ्यात जसे बर्फ किंवा कापणीच्यावेळी पाऊस, त्याचप्रमाणे मूर्खाला सन्मान शोभत नाही.

Like snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool.

2 २ जशी भटकणारी चिमणी आणि उडणारी निळवी, याप्रमाणे विनाकारण दिलेला शाप कोणावरही येत नाही.

Like a fluttering sparrow, like a darting swallow, so the undeserved curse doesn't come to rest.

3 ३ घोड्याला चाबूक, गाढवाला लगाम, आणि मूर्खाच्या पाठीला काठी आहे.

A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools.

4 ४ मूर्खाला उत्तर देऊ नको आणि त्याच्या मूर्खपणात सामील होऊ नकोस, किंवा देशील तर तू त्यांच्यासारखाच होशील.

Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him.

One who sends a message by the hand of a fool is cutting off feet and drinking violence.

Like the legs of the lame that hang loose: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

8 ८ मूर्खाला आदर देणारा, गोफणीत दगड बांधण्याऱ्यासारखा आहे.

As one who binds a stone in a sling, so is he who gives honor to a fool.

9 ९ मूर्खाच्या तोंडचे नीतिवचन, झिंगलेल्याच्या हातात रुतलेल्या काट्यासारखे आहे.

Like a thornbush that goes into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

10 १० एखादा तिरंदाज प्रत्येकाला जखमी करतो, तसेच जो मूर्खाला किंवा जवळून आल्या गेल्यास मोलाने काम करायला लावतो तो तसाच आहे.

As an archer who wounds all, so is he who hires a fool or he who hires those who pass by.

11 ११ जसा कुत्रा आपल्या स्वतःच्या ओकीकडे फिरतो. तसा मूर्ख आपली मूर्खता पुन्हा करतो.

As a dog that returns to his vomit, so is a fool who repeats his folly.

12 १२ आपल्या दृष्टीने स्वतःला शहाणा समजतो असा कोणी तुझ्या पाहण्यात आहे का? त्यापेक्षा मूर्खाला अधिक आशा आहे.

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

13 १३ आळशी मनुष्य म्हणतो, “रस्त्यावर सिंह आहे!” तेथे उघड्या जागेमध्ये सिंह आहे.

The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the road. A fierce lion roams the streets."

14 १४ दार जसे बिजागरीवर फिरते, तसा आळशी मनुष्य अंथरुणावर लोळत असतो.

As the door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed.

15 १५ आळशी आपला हात ताटात घालून ठेवतो, आणि तरी त्यास आपला हात तोंडापर्यंत नेण्यास शक्ती नसते.

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.

16 १६ विवेक दृष्टी असणाऱ्या सात मनुष्यांपेक्षा आळशी मनुष्य आपल्या दृष्टीने शहाणा समजतो.

The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer with discretion.

17 १७ जो दुसऱ्यांच्या वादात पडून संतप्त होतो, तो जवळून जाणाऱ्या कुत्र्याचे कान धरुन ओढणाऱ्यासारखा आहे.

Like one who grabs a dog's ears is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own.

18 १८ जो कोणी मूर्खमनुष्य जळते बाण मारतो,

Like a madman who shoots firebrands, arrows, and death,

19 १९ तो अशा मनुष्यासारखा आहे जो आपल्या एका शेजाऱ्याला फसवतो, आणि म्हणतो, मी विनोद सांगत नव्हतो काय?

is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, "Am I not joking?"

20 २० लाकडाच्या अभावी, अग्नी विझतो. आणि जेथे कोठे गप्पाटप्पा करणारे नसतील तर भांडणे थांबतात.

Without wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, contention ceases.

21 २१ जसे लोणारी कोळसा जळत्या कोळश्याला आणि लाकडे अग्नीला, त्याचप्रमाणे भांडण पेटवायला भांडखोर लागतो.

As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man to kindling strife.

22 २२ गप्पाटप्पा करणाऱ्याचे शब्द स्वादिष्ट पक्वान्नासारखे असतात. ते पोटाच्या आंतील भागापर्यंत खाली जातात.

The words of a gossip are as tasty morsels, they go down into the innermost parts.

23 २३ जसे वाणी कळवळ्याची आणि दुष्ट हृदय असणे, हे मातीच्या पात्राला रुप्याचा मुलामा दिल्यासारखे आहे.

Like silver dross on an earthen vessel are the lips of a fervent one with an evil heart.

24 २४ जो कोणी प्रबंधाचा द्वेष करतो तो आपल्या ओठांनी आपल्या भावना लपवतो, आणि तो आपल्या अंतर्यामात कपट बाळगतो;

A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart.

25 २५ तो विनम्रपणे बोलेल, पण त्याच्यावर विश्वास ठेवू नका, कारण त्याच्या हृदयात सात घृणा आहेत;

When his speech is charming, do not believe him; for there are seven abominations in his heart.

26 २६ तरी त्याचा द्वेष कपटाने झाकला जाईल, आणि दुष्टपणा मंडळीसमोर उघड केला जाईल.

His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

27 २७ जो कोणी खड्डा खणतो तो तिच्यात पडेल, आणि जो धोंडा लोटतो त्याच्यावर तो उलट येईल.

Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it. Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him.

28 २८ लबाड बोलणारी जिव्हा आपण चिरडून टाकलेल्या लोकांचा द्वेष करते, आणि फाजील स्तुती करणारे तोंड नाशाला कारण होते.

A lying tongue hates those it hurts; and a flattering mouth works ruin.
