അപ്പൊ. പ്രവൃത്തികൾ 22
‘Brothers and fathers, listen to the defence which I am about to make.’
2 ൨ എന്നാൽ പൗലോസ് എബ്രായഭാഷയിൽ സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് കേട്ടിട്ട് അവർ അധികം മൗനമായി നിന്നു. അവൻ പറഞ്ഞതെന്തെന്നാൽ:
When they heard that he was speaking to them in Hebrew, they were still more quiet; and Paul went on:
3 ൩ “ഞാൻ കിലിക്യയിലെ തർസോസിൽ ജനിച്ച യെഹൂദനും ഈ നഗരത്തിൽ വളർന്ന് ഗമാലിയേലിന്റെ കാല്ക്കൽ ഇരുന്ന് പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ ന്യായപ്രമാണം സൂക്ഷ്മതയോടെ അഭ്യസിച്ചവനുമാകയാൽ നിങ്ങൾ എല്ലാവരും ഇന്ന് ഇരിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ ദൈവസേവയിൽ തീഷ്ണതയുള്ളവനായിരുന്നു.
‘I am a Jew, from Tarsus in Cilicia, but I was brought up in this city under the teaching of Gamaliel, and educated in accordance with the strict system of our ancestral Law. I was as zealous in God’s service as any of you who are here today.
4 ൪ ഞാൻ ഈ മാർഗ്ഗക്കാരായ പുരുഷന്മാരെയും സ്ത്രീകളെയും പിടിച്ചുകെട്ടി തടവിൽ ഏല്പിച്ചും കൊല്ലുവാനും മടിക്കാതെ ഉപദ്രവിച്ചും വന്നു.
In my persecution of this Way I did not stop even at the taking of life. I put in chains, and imprisoned, men and women alike –
5 ൫ അതിന് മഹാപുരോഹിതനും മൂപ്പന്മാരുടെ സംഘം ഒക്കെയും എനിക്ക് സാക്ഷികൾ; അവരോട് സഹോദരന്മാർക്കായി എഴുത്ത് വാങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ട് ദമസ്കൊസിൽ പാർക്കുന്നവരെയും പിടിച്ചുകെട്ടി ശിക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനായി യെരൂശലേമിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുവരേണ്ടതിന് ഞാൻ അവിടേക്ക് യാത്രയായി.
And to that the high priest himself and all the council of elders can testify. For I had letters of introduction from them to our fellow Jews at Damascus, and I was on my way to that place, to bring those whom I might find there prisoners to Jerusalem for punishment.
6 ൬ അങ്ങനെ പ്രയാണം ചെയ്ത് ദമസ്കൊസിനോട് അടുത്തപ്പോൾ ഏകദേശം ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് പെട്ടെന്ന് ആകാശത്തുനിന്ന് വലിയൊരു വെളിച്ചം എന്റെ ചുറ്റും മിന്നി.
While I was still on my way, just as I was getting close to Damascus, about midday, suddenly there flashed from the heavens a great light all round me.
7 ൭ ഞാൻ നിലത്തുവീണു: ‘ശൌലേ, ശൌലേ, നീ എന്നെ ഉപദ്രവിക്കുന്നത് എന്ത്?’ എന്നു എന്നോട് പറയുന്ന ഒരു ശബ്ദം കേട്ട്.
I fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to me “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”
8 ൮ ‘കർത്താവേ, നീ ആരാകുന്നു?’ എന്ന് ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചതിന്: ‘നീ ഉപദ്രവിക്കുന്ന നസറായനായ യേശു ആകുന്നു ഞാൻ’ എന്ന് അവൻ എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞു.
“Who are you, Lord?” I replied. Then the voice said “I am Jesus of Nazareth whom you are persecuting.”
The men with me saw the light, but did not hear the speaker’s voice.
10 ൧൦ ‘കർത്താവേ, ഞാൻ എന്ത് ചെയ്യേണം?’ എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന് കർത്താവ് എന്നോട്; ‘എഴുന്നേറ്റ് ദമസ്കൊസിലേക്ക് പോക; നീ ചെയ്യേണ്ടുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങളെല്ലാം അവിടെവച്ച് നിന്നോട് പറയും’ എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു.
Then I said “What am I to do, Lord?” “Get up and go into Damascus,” The Lord said to me, “and there you will be told all that you have been appointed to do.”
11 ൧൧ ആ വെളിച്ചത്തിന്റെ തേജസ്സ് മുഖാന്തരം എനിക്ക് കണ്ണ് കാണായ്കയാൽ കൂടെയുള്ളവർ എന്നെ കൈയ്ക്കുപിടിച്ചു നടത്തി; അങ്ങനെ ഞാൻ ദമസ്കൊസിൽ എത്തി.
In consequence of that dazzling light I could not see, but my companions held me by the hand, until I reached Damascus.
12 ൧൨ അവിടെ പാർക്കുന്ന സകല യെഹൂദന്മാരാലും നല്ല സാക്ഷ്യം കൊണ്ടവനായി, ന്യായപ്രമാണപ്രകാരം ഭക്തിയുള്ള പുരുഷനായ അനന്യാസ് എന്നൊരുവൻ എന്റെ അടുക്കൽ വന്നുനിന്നു:
There a man named Ananias, a strict observer of our Law, well spoken of by all the Jewish inhabitants, came to see me.
13 ൧൩ ‘സഹോദരനായ ശൌലേ, കാഴ്ച പ്രാപിക്ക’ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; ആ നാഴികയിൽ തന്നേ ഞാൻ കാഴ്ച പ്രാപിച്ച് അവനെ കണ്ട്.
Standing close to me, he said “Saul, my brother, recover your sight.” And then and there I recovered my sight and looked up at him.
14 ൧൪ അപ്പോൾ അവൻ എന്നോട്: ‘നമ്മുടെ പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ ദൈവം നിന്നെ തന്റെ ഇഷ്ടം അറിയുവാനും നീതിമാനായവനെ കാണ്മാനും അവന്റെ സ്വന്ത വായിൽനിന്നും വചനം കേൾക്കുവാനും തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.
Then he said “The God of our ancestors has appointed you to learn his will, and to see the righteous one, and to hear words from his lips;
for you will be a witness for him to all the world of what you have just seen and heard.
16 ൧൬ ഇനി താമസിക്കുന്നത് എന്ത്? എഴുന്നേറ്റ് സ്നാനം ഏൽക്കുക, അവന്റെ നാമം വിളിച്ചപേക്ഷിച്ച് നിന്റെ പാപങ്ങളെ കഴുകിക്കളക’ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
And now why wait any longer, Be baptized at once, wash away your sins, and invoke his name.”
17 ൧൭ പിന്നെ ഞാൻ യെരൂശലേമിൽ മടങ്ങിച്ചെന്ന് ദൈവാലയത്തിൽ പ്രാർത്ഥിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു ദർശനത്തിൽ യേശുവിനെ കണ്ട്:
After my return to Jerusalem, while I was praying one day in the Temple, I fell into a trance,
18 ൧൮ ‘നീ ബദ്ധപ്പെട്ട് വേഗം യെരൂശലേം വിട്ടുപോക; എന്തുകൊണ്ടെന്നാൽ നീ എന്നെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്ന സാക്ഷ്യം അവർ കൈക്കൊൾകയില്ല’ എന്ന് എന്നോട് കല്പിച്ചു
and saw Jesus saying to me “Make haste and leave Jerusalem at once, because they will not accept your testimony about me.”
19 ൧൯ അതിന് ഞാൻ: ‘കർത്താവേ, നിന്നിൽ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നവരെ ഞാൻ തടവിൽ ആക്കുകയും പള്ളിതോറും അടിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു എന്നും
“Lord,” I answered, “these people know that I used to imprison and scourge, in synagogue after synagogue, those who believed in you;
20 ൨൦ നിന്റെ സാക്ഷിയായ സ്തെഫാനൊസിന്റെ രക്തം ചൊരിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ഞാനും സമ്മതിച്ച് അരികെ നിന്ന് അവനെ കൊല്ലുന്നവരുടെ വസ്ത്രം കാത്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു എന്നും അവർ അറിയുന്നുവല്ലോ’ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
and, when the blood of your martyr, Stephen, was being shed, I was myself standing by, approving of his death, and took charge of the clothes of those who were murdering him.”
21 ൨൧ എന്നാൽ കർത്താവ് എന്നോട്: ‘നീ പോക; ഞാൻ നിന്നെ ദൂരത്ത് ജാതികളുടെ അടുക്കലേക്ക് അയയ്ക്കും’ എന്നു കല്പിച്ചു”.
But Jesus said to me “Go; for I will send you to the Gentiles far away”.’
22 ൨൨ ഇതു പറയുന്നതുവരെ അവർ അവനെ കേട്ടുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു; പിന്നെ: “ഇങ്ങനത്തവനെ കൊന്നുകളക; അവൻ ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് യോഗ്യമല്ല” എന്ന് നിലവിളിച്ചുപറഞ്ഞു.
Up to this point the people had been listening to Paul, but at these words they called out, ‘Kill him! A fellow like this ought not to have been allowed to live!’
23 ൨൩ അവർ ആക്രോശിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് തങ്ങളുടെ പുറംവസ്ത്രം കീറിക്കളഞ്ഞും പൂഴി വാരി മേലോട്ട് എറിഞ്ഞും കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ
As they were shouting, tearing off their clothes, and throwing dust in the air,
24 ൨൪ അവർ ഇങ്ങനെ അവന്റെനേരെ ആർക്കുവാൻ കാര്യം എന്ത് എന്ന് അറിയേണ്ടതിന് അവനെ കോട്ടയിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോയി ചമ്മട്ടികൊണ്ടടിച്ച് അവനെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യേണം എന്ന് സഹസ്രാധിപൻ കല്പിച്ചു.
the commanding officer ordered Paul to be taken into the Fort, and directed that he should be examined under the lash so that he might find out the reason for their outcry against him.
25 ൨൫ തന്നെ തോൽകയർ കൊണ്ട് കെട്ടുമ്പോൾ പൗലൊസ് അരികെ നില്ക്കുന്ന ശതാധിപനോട്: “റോമാപൗരനും വിസ്താരം കഴിയാത്തവനുമായ മനുഷ്യനെ ചമ്മട്ടികൊണ്ട് അടിക്കുന്നത് നിയമാനുസൃതമോ?” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചു.
But just as they had tied him up to be scourged, Paul said to the centurion standing near, ‘Is it legal for you to scourge a Roman citizen, unconvicted?’
26 ൨൬ ഇതു കേട്ടപ്പോൾ ശതാധിപൻ ചെന്ന് സഹസ്രാധിപനോട്: “നീ എന്ത് ചെയ്‌വാൻ പോകുന്നു? ഈ മനുഷ്യൻ റോമാപൗരൻ ആകുന്നു” എന്നു ബോധിപ്പിച്ചു.
On hearing this, the centurion went and reported it to the commanding officer. ‘Do you know what you are doing?’ he said. ‘This man is a Roman citizen.’
27 ൨൭ സഹസ്രാധിപൻ വന്ന്: “നീ റോമാപൗരൻ തന്നെയോ? എന്നോട് പറക” എന്നു ചോദിച്ചതിന്: “അതെ” എന്ന് പൗലോസ് പറഞ്ഞു.
So the commanding officer went up to Paul and said, ‘Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?’ ‘Yes,’ replied Paul.
28 ൨൮ “ഞാൻ ഏറിയ മുതൽ കൊടുത്ത് ഈ പൗരത്വം സമ്പാദിച്ചു” എന്നു സഹസ്രാധിപൻ പറഞ്ഞതിന്: “ഞാനോ റോമൻ പൗരനായി ജനിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു” എന്ന് പൗലൊസ് പറഞ്ഞു.
‘I had to pay a heavy price for my position as citizen,’ said the officer. ‘I am one by birth,’ rejoined Paul.
29 ൨൯ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്‌വാൻ ഭാവിച്ചവർ ഉടനെ അവനെ വിട്ടുമാറി; സഹസ്രാധിപനും അവൻ റോമാപൗരൻ എന്ന് അറിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അവനെ ബന്ധിച്ചതുകൊണ്ട് ഭയപ്പെട്ടു.
The men who were to have examined Paul immediately drew back, and the officer, finding that Paul was a Roman citizen, was alarmed at having put him in chains.
30 ൩൦ പിറ്റേന്ന് യെഹൂദന്മാർ പൗലൊസിന്മേൽ ചുമത്തുന്ന കുറ്റത്തിന്റെ സത്യാവസ്ഥ അറിവാൻ ഇച്ഛിച്ചിട്ട് അവൻ മഹാപുരോഹിതന്മാരും ന്യായാധിപസംഘം ഒക്കെയും കൂടിവരുവാൻ കല്പിച്ചു, പൗലോസിനെ കെട്ടഴിച്ച് താഴെ കൊണ്ടുചെന്ന് അവരുടെ മുമ്പിൽ നിർത്തി.
On the next day the commanding officer, wishing to find out the real reason why Paul was denounced by the Jewish leaders, had his chains taken off, and directed the chief priests and the whole of the High Council to assemble, and then took Paul down and brought him before them.
