1 Awo mu mwaka ogw’ekkumi n’ettaano ogw’okufuga kwa Kayisaali Tiberiyo, Pontiyo Piraato bwe yali nga ye gavana wa Buyudaaya, Kerode nga y’afuga Ggaliraaya, muganda we Firipo nga y’afuga Italiya ne Tirakoniti, ne Lusaniya nga y’afuga Abireene,
Now in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother tetrarch of Ituraea and the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,
2 Ana ne Kayaafa nga be Bakabona Abasinga Obukulu, Yokaana, mutabani wa Zaakaliya ng’ali mu ddungu, n’afuna obubaka obuva eri Katonda.
in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, [the] word of God came upon John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.
3 Yokaana n’atambulanga ng’agenda abuulira mu bitundu ebyetoolodde Yoludaani, ng’ategeeza abantu obubaka obw’okubatizibwa obw’okwenenya olw’okusonyiyibwa ebibi,
And he came into all the district round the Jordan, preaching [the] baptism of repentance for [the] remission of sins,
4 nga bwe kyawandiikibwa mu kitabo eky’ebigambo bya nnabbi Isaaya nti, “Eddoboozi ly’oyo ayogerera mu ddungu nti, Mulongoose ekkubo lya Mukama, Muluŋŋamye amakubo ge;
as it is written in [the] book of [the] words of Esaias the prophet: Voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of [the] Lord, make straight his paths.
5 Buli kiwonvu kirijjuzibwa, na buli lusozi n’akasozi birisendebwa, na buli ekyakyama kirigololwa, n’obukubo obulimu obugulumugulumu bulifuuka enguudo ez’omuseetwe.
Every gorge shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked [places] shall become a straight [path], and the rough places smooth ways,
6 Abalina omubiri bonna baliraba obulokozi bwa Katonda.”
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
7 Kyeyava agamba abantu abajjanga gy’ali okubatizibwa nti, “Mmwe abaana b’emisota, ani eyabalabula okudduka obusungu obugenda okujja?
He said therefore to the crowds which went out to be baptised by him, Offspring of vipers, who has forewarned you to flee from the coming wrath?
8 Kale mubale ebibala ebiraga nga mwenenyezza, so temwogera munda zammwe nti tulina jjajjaffe Ibulayimu. Kubanga mbagamba nti Katonda asobola, mu mayinja gano, okuggyiramu Ibulayimu abazzukulu.
Produce therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say in yourselves, We have Abraham for [our] father, for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
9 Ne kaakano embazzi eteekeddwa ku kikolo ky’emiti. Noolwekyo buli muti ogutabala bibala birungi gujja kutemebwawo gusuulibwe mu muliro.”
And already also the axe is applied to the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and cast into [the] fire.
10 Ekibiina ne kimumubuuza nti, “Kale tukole ki?”
And the crowds asked him saying, What should we do then?
11 Yokaana n’abaddamu ng’agamba nti, “Alina ekkooti ebbiri, emu agigabire atalina, n’oyo alina emmere aweeko oyo atalina kyakulya.”
And he answering says to them, He that has two body-coats, let him give to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.
12 Awo abasolooza b’omusolo nabo, ne bajja babatizibwe. Ne babuuza Yokaana nti, “Omuyigiriza tukole ki?”
And tax-gatherers came also to be baptised, and they said to him, Teacher, what should we do?
13 Yokaana n’abaddamu nti, “Temusoloozanga muwendo gusukka ku ogwo ogwalagibwa.”
And he said to them, Take no more [money] than what is appointed to you.
14 Abaserikale nabo ne babuuza Yokaana nti, “Ate ffe, tukole tutya?” Yokaana n’abagamba nti, “Temuggyangako bantu nsimbi zaabwe. So temubawaayirizanga, n’empeera ebaweebwa ebamalenga.”
And persons engaged in military service also asked him saying, And we, what should we do? And he said to them, Oppress no one, nor accuse falsely, and be satisfied with your pay.
15 Abantu baali balindirira nga basuubira, era nga buli muntu yeebuuza obanga Yokaana ye Kristo.
But as the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John whether he might be the Christ,
16 Yokaana n’addamu bonna ng’agamba nti, “Nze mbabatiza na mazzi, naye waliwo ajja, alina obuyinza okunsinga, n’okusaanira sisaanira na kusumulula lukoba lwa ngatto ze. Oyo alibabatiza n’omuliro ne Mwoyo Mutukuvu;
John answered all, saying, I indeed baptise you with water, but the mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not fit to unloose; he shall baptise you with [the] Holy Spirit and fire;
17 n’olugali luli mu mukono gwe okulongoosa egguuliro lye n’okukuŋŋaanyiza eŋŋaano mu tterekero lye, naye ebisusunku alibyokya n’omuliro ogutazikira.”
whose winnowing-fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing-floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
18 Yokaana n’abuulirira abantu ebigambo bingi ebirala, nga bw’ababuulira Enjiri.
Exhorting then many other things also he announced [his] glad tidings to the people.
19 Naye Yokaana bwe yanenya Kerode, omufuzi, olw’okutwala Kerodiya eyali muka muganda we, n’olw’ebibi ebirala Kerode bye yali akoze,
But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him as to Herodias, the wife of his brother, and as to all the wicked things which Herod had done,
20 ate ku ebyo byonna Kerode n’ayongerako na kino: n’akwata Yokaana n’amuggalira mu kkomera.
added this also to all [the rest], that he shut up John in prison.
21 Olunaku lumu, abantu bonna abaaliwo nga babatizibwa, ne Yesu n’abatizibwa. Yesu n’asaba, eggulu ne libikkuka,
And it came to pass, all the people having been baptised, and Jesus having been baptised and praying, that the heaven was opened,
22 Mwoyo Mutukuvu n’amukkako mu kifaananyi eky’ejjiba. Eddoboozi ne liva mu ggulu ne ligamba nti, “Ggwe Mwana wange omwagalwa gwe nsanyukira ennyo.”
and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form as a dove upon him; and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I have found my delight.
23 Yesu yali awezezza emyaka ng’amakumi asatu bwe yatandika omulimu gwe. Yesu nga bwe kyalowoozebwa, yali mwana wa Yusufu: ne Yusufu nga mwana wa Eri,
And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years old; being as was supposed son of Joseph; of Eli,
24 Eri nga mwana wa Mattati, ne Mattati nga mwana wa Leevi, ne Leevi nga mwana wa Mereki, ne Mereki nga mwana wa Yanayi, ne Yanayi nga mwana wa Yusufu,

25 ne Yusufu nga mwana wa Mattasiya, ne Mattasiya nga mwana wa Amosi, ne Amosi nga mwana wa Nakkumu, ne Nakkumu nga mwana wa Esuli, ne Esuli nga mwana wa Naggayi,

26 ne Naggayi nga mwana wa Maasi, ne Maasi nga mwana wa Mattasiya, ne Mattasiya nga mwana wa Semeyini, ne Semeyini nga mwana wa Yoseki, ne Yoseki nga mwana wa Yoda,
of Maath, of Mattathias, of Semei, of Joseph, of Juda,
27 ne Yoda nga mwana wa Yokanaani, ne Yokanaani nga mwana wa Lesa, ne Lesa nga mwana wa Zerubbaberi, ne Zerubbaberi nga mwana wa Seyalutyeri, ne Seyalutyeri nga mwana wa Neeri,
of Joannes, of Resa, of Zorobabel, of Salathiel, of Neri,
28 ne Neeri nga mwana wa Mereki, ne Mereki nga mwana wa Addi, ne Addi nga mwana wa Kosamu, ne Kosamu nga mwana wa Erumadamu, ne Erumadamu nga mwana wa Eri,
of Melchi, of Addi, of Cosam, of Elmodam, of Er,
29 ne Eri nga mwana wa Yoswa, ne Yoswa nga mwana wa Eryeza, ne Eryeza nga mwana wa Yolimu, ne Yolimu nga mwana wa Mattati, ne Mattati nga mwana wa Leevi,
