< Yokaana 1 >

1 Kigambo yaliwo ng’ensi tennatondebwa. Kigambo yali ne Katonda, era Kigambo yali Katonda.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was face to face with God, and the Word was God.
2 Oyo, okuva ku lubereberye yaliwo ne Katonda.
He was face to face with God in the Beginning.
3 Ebintu byonna byatondebwa ku lulwe, era tewaliiwo kintu na kimu ekyatondebwa nga taliiwo.
All things came into being through him, and apart from him nothing that exists came into being.
4 Mu ye mwe mwali obulamu; era obulamu buno ne buba ekitangaala eri abantu.
In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 Omusana ne gwaka mu kizikiza, naye ekizikiza tekyaguyinza.
And the light is shining in the darkness, and the darkness has not overwhelmed it
6 Ne walabika omuntu ng’ayitibwa Yokaana, Katonda gwe yatuma,
A man came into being, sent from God, whose name was John.
7 eyajja okutegeeza abantu ebifa ku musana, bonna bakkirize nga bayita mu ye.
He came as a witness, that he might bear testimony concerning the Light - so that all men might believe through him.
8 Yokaana si ye yali Omusana, wabula ye yatumibwa ategeeze eby’Omusana.
He was not the Light; it was to bear testimony concerning the Light that he came into being.
9 Kristo ye yali Omusana, omusana ogw’amazima, ogujja mu nsi, okwakira buli muntu.
The true Light, which enlightens every man, was then coming into the world.
10 Kyokka newaakubadde Kigambo oyo ye yatonda ensi, bwe yajja mu nsi, ensi teyamutegeera.
He was in the world, and through him the world came into being, yet the world knew him not.
11 Yajja eri abantu be, naye abantu be ne batamusembeza.
He came to his own creation, and his own folk welcomed him not.
12 Naye bonna abaamusembeza, yabawa obuyinza okufuuka abaana ba Katonda; be bo abakkiriza erinnya lye.
But to all who receive him, to them he has given the right to become children of God, even to those who trust in his name;
13 Abataazaalibwa musaayi, oba okwagala kw’omubiri, wadde okwagala kw’omuntu, naye abaazaalibwa okwagala kwa Katonda.
who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 Kigambo n’afuuka omubiri, n’abeera mu ffe, ne tulaba ekitiibwa kye, ng’eky’oyo omu yekka eyava eri kitaffe ng’ajjudde ekisa n’amazima.
And the Word became flesh and tented with us. And we gazed on his glory - glory as of the Father’s only Son - full of grace and truth.
15 Yokaana Omubatiza yamwogerako, ng’alangirira nti, “Ono ye oyo gwe nayogerako nti, ‘Waliwo ajja emabega wange, eyansoka okubaawo, kubanga yaliwo nga sinnabaawo.’”
John bore witness concerning him, and cried aloud, saying, "This is he of whom I said, ‘He who is coming after me has been put before me, for he was before me.’"
16 Ku kujjula kwe ffenna kwe twagabana ekisa ekisukiridde ekisa.
For out of his fulness we have all received, yes, grace upon grace.
17 Amateeka gaatuweebwa nga gayita mu Musa, naye Yesu Kristo ye yaaleeta ekisa n’amazima.
For the Law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 Tewali n’omu eyali alabye ku Katonda, okuggyako Omwana we omu yekka, abeera mu kifuba kya kitaffe, oyo ye yatutegeeza byonna ebimufaako.
No man has ever seen God; God, only begotten, who is in the bosom of the Father - he has interpreted him.
19 Bino bye bigambo Yokaana Omubatiza bye yategeeza abakulembeze b’Abayudaaya bwe baamutumira bakabona n’Abaleevi okuva mu Yerusaalemi ne bamubuuza nti, “Ggwe ani?”
Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent some priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
20 Teyagaana kubaddamu, wabula yayatulira ddala nti, “Si nze Kristo.”
He acknowledged - he did not deny it - but acknowledged, "I am not the Christ."
21 Ne bamubuuza nti, “Kale ggwe ani? Ggwe Eriya?” Yokaana Omubatiza n’addamu nti, “Nedda, si nze ye.” Ne bongera okumubuuza nti, “Ggwe Nnabbi ayogerwako?” N’addamu nti, “Nedda.”
"What then?" they questioned; "Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" "No," he replied.
22 Awo ne bamugamba nti, “Abatutumye tunaabagamba nti, Ggwe ani? Weeyita otya?”
Then said they to him. "Who are you? That we may give some answer to those who sent us. What account do you give of yourself?"
23 N’abaddamu nti, “Nze ndi ddoboozi ly’oyo ayogerera mu ddoboozi ery’omwanguka ng’asinziira mu ddungu nti, ‘Mutereeze ekkubo lya Mukama mweteekereteekere okujja kwe, nga nnabbi Isaaya bwe yayogera.’”
He said, "I am a voice of one who cries aloud in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as said the prophet Isaiah."
24 Abaatumibwa baava eri Abafalisaayo.
Now it was some of the Pharisees who had been sent to him;
25 Awo ne babuuza Yokaana nti, “Kale lwaki obatiza, obanga si ggwe Kristo oba Eriya oba nnabbi oli?”
so they questioned him, saying, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
26 Yokaana n’addamu nti, “Nze mbatiza na mazzi, naye waliwo ayimiridde wakati mu mmwe gwe mutamanyi,
"I indeed am baptizing in water," John said in reply, "but in your midst stands One whom you do not recognize,
27 anvaako emabega, nze sisaanira na kusumulula buguwa bwa ngatto ze.”
One who is to come after me, whose sandal-strap I am not worthy to untie."
28 Ebyo byali Besaniya, emitala w’omugga Yoludaani, Yokaana Omubatiza gye yabatirizanga.
This happened in Bethany, beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.
29 Ku lunaku olwaddirira, Yokaana Omubatiza n’alaba Yesu ng’ajja, n’agamba nti, “Mulabe Omwana gw’Endiga owa Katonda aggyawo ebibi by’ensi.
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said. "Behold, that is God’s Lamb, who takes and bears away the sin of the world.
30 Ye wuuyo gwe nayogerako, bwe nagamba nti, ‘Waliwo omuntu anvaako emabega ye ansinga obuyinza, kubanga ye yaliwo nga nze sinnabaawo.’
This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes One who has been put before me, for he was before me.’
31 Nange nnali simumanyi, wabula nze najja okubatiza n’amazzi, ndyoke mulage eri abantu ba Isirayiri.”
I myself did not recognize him; I only came baptizing in water, in order that he might be openly shown to Israel."
32 Awo Yokaana Omubatiza n’abategeeza nga bwe yalaba Mwoyo Mutukuvu ng’akka okuva mu ggulu ng’ali ng’ejjiba n’abeera ku Yesu,
John also bore this testimony, saying. "I saw the Spirit like a dove descend from heaven and rest upon him.
33 n’abagamba nti, “Nze saamutegeera, kyokka Katonda bwe yantuma okubatiza yaŋŋamba nti, ‘Bw’olabanga Mwoyo Mutukuvu ng’akka n’abeera ku muntu, nga oyo, ye Kristo abatiza ne Mwoyo Mutukuvu.’
And I did not recognize him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and resting upon him, is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’
34 Ekyo nkirabye era nkiweerako obujulirwa nti Ye Mwana wa Katonda.”
This I have seen, and I am become a witness to the fact that he is the Son of God."
35 Awo ku lunaku olwaddirira nate Yokaana bwe yali ayimiridde n’abayigirizwa be babiri,
Next day again, John was standing with two of his disciples.
36 Yesu n’ayitawo ng’atambula. Yokaana n’amutunuulira enkaliriza n’agamba nti, “Mulabe Omwana gw’Endiga wa Katonda.”
After gazing intently on Jesus as he walked about, he said, "Look! that is the Lamb of God!"
37 Awo abayigirizwa abo ababiri bwe baawulira ekyo ne bagoberera Yesu.
The two disciples heard his exclamation, and they followed Jesus.
38 Yesu bwe yakyuka n’abalaba nga bamugoberera n’ababuuza nti, “Mwagala ki?” Ne bamuddamu nti, “Labbi” (ekitegeeza nti: “Omuyigiriza”), “obeera wa?”
Then Jesus turned and saw them following him, and said, "What do you want?" They replied, "Rabbi" (which may be translated ‘Teacher’), "where are you staying?"
39 N’abaddamu nti, “Mujje mulabeyo.” Awo ne bagenda naye gye yali abeera, olunaku olwo ne baluzibiza eyo nga bali naye, obudde bwali ng’essaawa kkumi ez’olweggulo okutuusa akawungeezi.
He said to them, "Come, and you shall see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was then about four o’clock in the afternoon.
40 Omu ku abo ababiri abaawulira Yokaana ng’ayogera ne bagoberera Yesu, yali Andereya, muganda wa Simooni Peetero.
One of the two men who heard what John said and followed Jesus, was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter.
41 Awo Andereya n’agenda anoonya muganda we Simooni n’amugamba nti, “Tulabye Masiya” (amakulu nti Kristo).
In the morning he found his brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (a word which means Christ, the Anointed One).
42 Andereya n’atwala Simooni eri Yesu. Yesu bwe yeetegereza Simooni, n’amugamba nti, “Ggwe Simooni omwana wa Yokaana, kale onooyitibwanga Keefa,” amakulu nti Peetero.
He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked intently at him and said. "You are Simon, son of John; you shall be called Cephas" (or ‘Peter,’ which means ‘Rock’).
43 Ku lunaku olwaddirira, Yesu n’agenda e Ggaliraaya, bwe yasanga Firipo n’amugamba nti, “Ngoberera.”
Next day Jesus decided to go into Galilee; and he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."
44 Firipo yali wa mu kibuga Besusayida ewaabwe wa Andereya ne Peetero.
Now Philip belonged to Bethsaida, the same town as Andrew and Peter.
45 Firipo bwe yalaba Nassanayiri, n’amugamba nti, “Tulabye Yesu mutabani wa Yusufu ow’e Nazaaleesi, Musa ne bannabbi gwe baawandiikako.”
Then Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found him about whom Moses wrote in the Law, as did the prophets - Jesus of Nazareth, Joseph’s son."
46 Nassanayiri n’amuddamu nti, “Mu Nazaaleesi musobola okuvaamu ekintu ekirungi?” Firipo kwe kumuddamu nti, “Jjangu weerabireko.”
And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."
47 Nassanayiri bwe yali asemberera Yesu, Yesu n’agamba nti, “Laba, Omuyisirayiri wawu ataliimu bukuusa.”
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, and said, "Behold a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit."
48 Nassanayiri kwe kumuddamu nti, “Ontegedde otya?” Yesu n’amugamba nti, “Firipo bw’abadde tannakutuukako, nkulabye ng’oli wansi w’omutiini.”
"How do you know me?" asked Nathanael. "Before Philip called you," replied Jesus, "when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
49 Nassanayiri n’amuddamu nti, “Labbi, oli Mwana wa Katonda, gwe Kabaka wa Isirayiri!”
"Rabbi," answered Nathanael, "you are the Son of God; you are King of Israel."
50 Awo Yesu n’amugamba nti, “Okkiriza kubanga nkugambye nti nkulabye ng’oli wansi w’omutiini? Oliraba n’ebisinga awo obukulu.
Jesus said in reply. "Do you believe because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree?’
51 Ddala ddala nkugamba nti oliraba eggulu nga libikkuse ne bamalayika ba Katonda nga balinnya era nga bakkira ku Mwana w’Omuntu.”
You shall see greater things than that! Believe me," he added, "you all shall see heaven opened wide, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man."
