1 Laba slava ir labāka nekā salda eļļa, un miršanas diena labāka nekā dzimšanas diena.
A good name is better than fine perfume; and the day of death better than the day of one’s birth.
2 Labāki ir vaidu namā iet nekā dzīru namā; jo tas ir visu cilvēku gals, un tas, kas dzīvo, to ņem pie sirds.
It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting; for that is the end of all men, and the living should take this to heart.
3 Noskumt ir labāki nekā smieties; jo kad vaigs noskumis, tas sirdij labi.
Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the face the heart is made good.
4 Gudru ļaužu sirds ir vaidu namā, bet ģeķu sirds ir prieku namā.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.
5 Labāk ir klausīties gudra vīra rāšanu, nekā klausīties ģeķa dziesmu.
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than for a man to hear the song of fools.
6 Jo kā ērkšķi sprakst apakš poda, tāpat ir ģeķa smiešanās, - tā ir arī niecība.
For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.
7 Tiešām, netaisna peļņa arī gudru padara neprātīgu, un dāvanas samaitā sirdi.
Surely extortion makes the wise man foolish; and a bribe destroys the understanding.
8 Labāks ir kādas lietas gals nekā viņas iesākums. Lēnprātīgais ir labāks nekā lepnais.
Better is the end of a thing than its beginning. The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
9 Neesi ātrs savā prātā dusmot, jo dusmība mājo ģeķu azotē.
Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
10 Nesaki: kā tas nāk, ka senās dienas bijušas labākas nekā šīs! Jo ar gudrību tu to nevaicā.
Don’t say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not ask wisely about this.
11 Gudrība ir tik laba kā mantība un labums tiem, kas sauli redz.
Wisdom is as good as an inheritance. Yes, it is more excellent for those who see the sun.
12 Jo gudrības pavēnī ir kā naudas pavēnī; un tas ir atzīšanas labums, ka gudrība dod dzīvību tiem, kam tā ir.
For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.
13 Uzlūko Dieva darbu, jo kas to var darīt taisnu, ko viņš ir darījis līku?
Consider the work of God, for who can make that straight which he has made crooked?
14 Baudi labumu labā dienā, bet ļaunu dienu ņem arī par labu; jo Dievs dara gan šo gan to, tāpēc ka cilvēkam nebūs zināt, kas būs pēc viņa.
In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yes, God has made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything after him.
15 Visu to esmu redzējis savas niecības dienās: Cits ir taisns, kas savā taisnībā iet bojā, un cits ir bezdievīgs, kas savā blēdībā ilgi pastāv.
All this I have seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who lives long in his evildoing.
16 Neesi pārlieku taisns un neturies pats par visai gudru, - kāpēc tu gribi iet bojā?
Don’t be overly righteous, neither make yourself overly wise. Why should you destroy yourself?
17 Neesi pārlieku bezdievīgs, un neesi visai ģeķīgs; kāpēc tu gribi nomirt nelaikā?
Don’t be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time?
18 Labi ir, ka tu šo satver un arī no tā otra savu roku neatrauj; jo kas Dievu bīstas, tas no visa tā izsprūk.
It is good that you should take hold of this. Yes, also don’t withdraw your hand from that; for he who fears God will come out of them all.
19 Gudrība stiprina gudro vairāk nekā desmit vareni, kas ir pilsētā.
Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers who are in a city.
20 Tiešām, nav neviena cilvēka, kas taisns būtu virs zemes, kas labi darītu un negrēkotu.
Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and doesn’t sin.
21 Neliec arī vērā visus vārdus, kas top runāti, lai tev nav jādzird, ka tavs kalps tev lād.
Also don’t take heed to all words that are spoken, lest you hear your servant curse you;
22 Jo daudzkārt arī tava sirds zin, ka arī tu citus esi lādējis.
for often your own heart knows that you yourself have likewise cursed others.
23 Visu šo es ar gudrību esmu izmeklējis. Es sacīju: es dabūšu gudrību, bet viņa bija vēl tālu no manis.
All this I have proved in wisdom. I said, “I will be wise;” but it was far from me.
24 Tālu ir, kas ir, un ļoti dziļš; kas to var atrast?
That which is, is far off and exceedingly deep. Who can find it out?
25 Es griezos ar savu sirdi, ka es zinātu un izvaicātu un meklētu gudrību un skaidrību, un ka es atzītu bezdievību par ģeķību un neprātību par nelietību.
I turned around, and my heart sought to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know that wickedness is stupidity, and that foolishness is madness.
26 Un es atradu vienu lietu rūgtāku nekā nāvi: sievu, kā sirds ir tīkli un valgi un kā rokas ir saites. Kas labs ir Dieva priekšā, tas no viņas izglābsies, bet grēcinieks caur viņu taps sagūstīts.
I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and traps, whose hands are chains. Whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner will be ensnared by her.
27 Redzi, šo esmu atradis, saka tas mācītājs, citu pēc cita, ka es to galavārdu atrastu.
“Behold, I have found this,” says the Preacher, “to one another, to find an explanation
28 To mana dvēsele vēl meklē, un to es vēl neesmu atradis: Starp tūkstošiem es vienu vīru esmu atradis, bet sievu starp šiem visiem es neesmu atradis.
which my soul still seeks, but I have not found. I have found one man among a thousand, but I have not found a woman among all those.
29 Bet redzi, to tikai es esmu atradis, ka Dievs cilvēku ir radījis taisnu, bet tie dodas uz daudz gudrošanām.
Behold, I have only found this: that God made mankind upright; but they search for many inventions.”
