Her husband, Joseph, was a righteous man, and he did not want to disgrace her publicly. So he decided to secretly end his engagement with her.

As he thought about these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, because the one who is conceived in her is conceived by the Holy Spirit.

She will give birth to a son, and you will call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

All this happened to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
23 ecce virgo in utero habebit et pariet filium et vocabunt nomen eius Emmanuhel quod est interpretatum Nobiscum Deus
“Behold, the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call his name Immanuel”—which means, “God with us.”
24 exsurgens autem Ioseph a somno fecit sicut praecepit ei angelus Domini et accepit coniugem suam
Joseph woke up from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and he took her as his wife.
25 et non cognoscebat eam donec peperit filium suum primogenitum et vocavit nomen eius Iesum
But he did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to a son. Then he called his name Jesus.
