1 Paulus, servus Iesu Christi, vocatus Apostolus, segregatus in Evangelium Dei,
From Paul, a slave of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for a gospel of God,
2 quod ante promiserat per Prophetas suos in Scripturis sanctis
which through his prophets he promised beforetime, in holy writings;
3 de Filio suo, qui factus est ei ex semine David secundum carnem,
this gospel is concerning his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of David’s posterity in respect of his bodily nature,
4 qui praedestinatus est Filius Dei in virtute secundum spiritum sanctificationis ex resurrectione mortuorum Iesu Christi Domini nostri:
but was by his resurrection from the dead instated as Son of God, with power, in respect of his spirit of holiness.
5 per quem accepimus gratiam, et Apostolatum ad obediendum fidei in omnibus Gentibus pro nomine eius,
It is through him, even Jesus Christ our Lord, that I received grace and apostleship to promote obedience to the faith among all the Gentiles, for his name’s sake;
6 in quibus estis et vos vocati Iesu Christi:
among whom you also are called to be Jesus Christ’s.
7 omnibus qui sunt Romae, dilectis Dei, vocatis sanctis. Gratia vobis, et pax a Deo Patre nostro, et Domino Iesu Christo.
To all that are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints. May God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ, bless you, and give you peace.
8 Primum quidem gratias ago Deo meo per Iesum Christum pro omnibus vobis: quia fides vestra annunciatur in universo mundo.
First I thank my God, through Jesus Christ, for all of you, because your faith is being proclaimed throughout all the world.
9 Testis enim mihi est Deus, cui servio in spiritu meo in Evangelio filii eius, quod sine intermissione memoriam vestri facio
God is my witness, to whom I render holy service in my spirit in the gospel of his Son, how unceasingly I am ever making mention of you in my prayers,
10 semper in orationibus meis: obsecrans, si quomodo tandem aliquando prosperum iter habeam in voluntate Dei veniendi ad vos.
always entreating him that now at length, if such be his will, the way may be made clear for me to come to you.
11 Desidero enim videre vos: ut aliquid impertiar vobis gratiae spiritualis ad confirmandos vos:
For I am longing so to see you, in order to impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established;
12 id est, simul consolari in vobis per eam, quae invicem est, fidem vestram, atque meam.
that is, that I with you may be encouraged by you, each of us by the other’s faith, yours and mine.
13 Nolo autem vos ignorare fratres: quia saepe proposui venire ad vos, (et prohibitus sum usque adhuc) ut aliquem fructum habeam in vobis, sicut et in ceteris gentibus.
I want you to know, brothers, that many a time I have planned to come to you - though until now I have been hindered - so as to have some harvest-fruit among you also, even as I have among the rest of the Gentiles.
14 Graecis ac barbaris, sapientibus, et insipientibus debitor sum:
To Greeks and to barbarians, to the cultured and to the uncultured, I have a debt to discharge.
15 ita (quod in me) promptum est et vobis, qui Romae estis, evangelizare.
So much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
16 Non enim erubesco Evangelium. Virtus enim Dei est in salutem omni credenti, Iudaeo primum, et Graeco.
FOR I AM PROUD OF THE GOSPEL. IT IS GOD’S SAVING POWER FOR EVERY ONE WHO BELIEVES. FOR THE JEW FIRST, AND ALSO FOR THE GENTILE.
17 Iustitia enim Dei in eo revelatur ex fide in fidem: sicut scriptum est: Iustus autem ex fide vivit.
FOR IN IT IS BEING REVEALED A RIGHTEOUSNESS WHICH PROCEEDS FROM GOD, FROM FAITH UNTO FAITH; AS IT IS WRITTEN.
18 Revelatur enim ira Dei de caelo super omnem impietatem, et iniustitiam hominum eorum, qui veritatem Dei in iniustitia detinent:
For God’s wrath is ever being revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who smother the truth by their unrighteousness.
19 quia quod notum est Dei, manifestum est in illis. Deus enim illis manifestavit.
This is so because that which may be known of God is manifest among them; for God has made it manifest to them.
20 Invisibilia enim ipsius, a creatura mundi, per ea quae facta sunt, intellecta, conspiciuntur: sempiterna quoque eius virtus, et divinitas: ita ut sint inexcusabiles. (aïdios g126)
For ever since the creation of the world his invisible nature, even his everlasting power and divinity, has been clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made. So they have no excuse. (aïdios g126)
21 Quia cum cognovissent Deum, non sicut Deum glorificaverunt, aut gratias egerunt: sed evanuerunt in cogitationibus suis, et obscuratum est insipiens cor eorum:
For although they knew God, yet they did not glorify him as God, nor give him thanks; but became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened.
22 dicentes enim se esse sapientes, stulti facti sunt.
While they professed to be wise, they became fools,
23 Et mutaverunt gloriam incorruptibilis Dei in similitudinem imaginis corruptibilis hominis, et volucrum, et quadrupedum, et serpentium.
and exchanged the majesty of the imperishable God for an idol, graven in the likeness of perishable man, or of birds and four-footed beasts and creeping things.
24 Propter quod tradidit illos Deus in desideria cordis eorum, in immunditiam: ut contumeliis afficiant corpora sua in semetipsis:
So God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their own bodies;
25 qui commutaverunt veritatem Dei in mendacium: et coluerunt, et servierunt creaturae potius quam Creatori, qui est benedictus in saecula. Amen. (aiōn g165)
because they exchanged the truth of God for an untruth, and worshiped and served the creature, rather than the Creator who is blessed forever. Amen. (aiōn g165)
26 Propterea tradidit illos Deus in passiones ignominiae. Nam feminae eorum immutaverunt naturalem usum in eum usum, qui est contra naturam.
That is why God has given them up to passions of dishonor; for on the one hand their women actually changed the natural function of sex into that which is against nature;
27 Similiter autem et masculi, relicto naturali usu feminae, exarserunt in desideriis suis in invicem, masculi in masculos turpitudinem operantes, et mercedem, quam oportuit, erroris sui in semetipsis recipientes.
and on the other hand their men likewise abandoned the natural use of women, and were ablaze with passion for one another; men with men practising shameless acts and receiving in their own person that recompense of their wrong-doing which necessarily followed.
28 Et sicut non probaverunt Deum habere in notitia: tradidit illos Deus in reprobum sensum: ut faciant ea, quae non conveniunt,
And just as they refused to continue to retain God in their knowledge, so did God cast them out to an outcast mind, to do those things which were indecent.
29 repletos omni iniquitate, malitia, fornicatione, avaritia, nequitia, plenos invidia, homicidio, contentione, dolo, malignitate, susurrones,
They were overflowing with every kind of iniquity, depravity, greed, and malice. They were full of envy, murder, quarreling, deceit, and malignity.
30 detractores, Deo odibiles, contumeliosos, superbos, elatos, inventores malorum, parentibus non obedientes,
They became whisperers, back-biters, hated of God, insolent, haughty, boastful. They invented sins. They were disobedient to parents.
31 insipientes, incompositos, sine affectione, absque foedere, sine misericordia.
They were without sense, without faith, without natural affection, without mercy.
32 Qui cum iustitiam Dei cognovissent, non intellexerunt quoniam qui talia agunt, digni sunt morte: et non solum qui ea faciunt, sed etiam qui consentiunt facientibus.
Though they knew well the ordinance of God, that those who practise such vices are worthy of death, they not only continue to do the same, but were even applauding those who practise vice.
