1 Erat autem Pascha et Azyma post biduum: et quaerebant summi sacerdotes, et Scribae quomodo eum dolo tenerent, et occiderent.
Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were two days away, and the chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.
2 Dicebant autem: Non in die festo, ne forte tumultus fieret in populo.
But they said, “Not during the feast, otherwise there will be a riot among the people.”
3 Et cum esset Bethaniae in domo Simonis leprosi, et recumberet: venit mulier habens alabastrum unguenti nardi spicati pretiosi, et fracto alabastro, effudit super caput eius.
Meanwhile Jesus was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the house of Simon the leper, and a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment made of pure nard. She broke the alabaster jar and poured out the ointment on his head.
4 Erant autem quidam indigne ferentes intra semetipsos, et dicentes: Ut quid perditio ista unguenti facta est?
But some were expressing indignation to one another, saying, “For what purpose has this ointment been wasted?
5 Poterat enim unguentum istud vaenundari plus quam trecentis denariis, et dari pauperibus. Et fremebant in eam.
It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money could have been given to the poor.” So they began scolding her.
6 Iesus autem dixit: Sinite eam, quid illi molesti estis? Bonum opus operata est in me.
But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you causing trouble for her? She has done a good deed to me.
7 semper enim pauperes habetis vobiscum: et cum volueritis, potestis illis benefacere: me autem non semper habetis.
For you always have the poor with you, and you can do good to them whenever you wish, but you do not always have me.
8 Quod habuit haec, fecit: praevenit ungere corpus meum in sepulturam.
She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand to prepare me for burial.
9 Amen dico vobis: Ubicumque praedicatum fuerit Evangelium istud in universo mundo, et quod fecit haec, narrabitur in memoriam eius.
Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial to her.”
10 Et Iudas Iscariotes unus de duodecim abiit ad summos sacerdotes, ut proderet eum illis.
Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to deliver Jesus up to them.
11 Qui audientes gavisi sunt: et promiserunt ei pecuniam se daturos. Et quaerebat quomodo illum opportune traderet.
When they heard why he had come, they were glad and promised to give him money. So he was looking for a way to betray Jesus at an opportune time.
12 Et primo die Azymorum quando Pascha immolabant, dicunt ei discipuli: Quo vis eamus, et paremus tibi ut manduces Pascha?
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus' disciples said to him, “Where do yoʋ want us to go and make preparations for yoʋ to eat the Passover?”
13 Et mittit duos ex discipulis suis, et dicit eis: Ite in civitatem: et occurret vobis homo lagenam aquae baiulans, sequimini eum:
So he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him.
14 et quocumque introierit, dicite domino domus, quia magister dicit: Ubi est refectio mea, ubi Pascha cum discipulis meis manducem?
Wherever he enters, tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’
15 Et ipse vobis demonstrabit coenaculum grande, stratum: et illic parate nobis.
He will then show you a large upper room, furnished and prepared; make preparations for us there.”
16 Et abierunt discipuli eius, et venerunt in civitatem: et invenerunt sicut dixerat illis, et paraverunt Pascha.
So his disciples left, went into the city, and found it just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
17 Vespere autem facto, venit cum duodecim.
When it was evening, Jesus came with the twelve.
18 Et discumbentibus eis, et manducantibus, ait IESUS: Amen dico vobis, quia unus ex vobis tradet me, qui manducat mecum.
As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, one of you who is eating with me will betray me.”
19 At illi coeperunt contristari, et dicere ei singulatim: Numquid ego?
So they began to be sorrowful and to say one after another, “Surely not I?” and, “Surely not I?”
20 Qui ait illis: Unus ex duodecim, qui intingit mecum manum in catino.
Jesus answered them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread with me into the dish.
21 Et Filius quidem hominis vadit sicut scriptum est de eo: vae autem homini illi, per quem Filius hominis tradetur. bonum erat ei, si non esset natus homo ille.
The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
22 Et manducantibus illis, accepit Iesus panem: et benedicens fregit, et dedit eis, et ait: Sumite, hoc est corpus meum.
As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had blessed it, he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take and eat this bread; this is my body.”
23 Et accepto calice, gratias agens dedit eis: et biberunt ex illo omnes.
Then he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.
24 Et ait illis: Hic est sanguis meus novi testamenti, qui pro multis effundetur.
He said to them, “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many.
25 Amen dico vobis, quia iam non bibam de hoc genimine vitis usque in diem illum, cum illud bibam novum in regno Dei.
Truly I say to you, I will certainly not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God.”
26 Et hymno dicto exierunt in Montem olivarum.
And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
27 Et ait eis Iesus: Omnes scandalizabimini in me in nocte ista: quia scriptum est: Percutiam pastorem, et dispergentur oves.
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’
28 Sed postquam resurrexero, praecedam vos in Galilaeam.
However, after I have been raised up, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.”
29 Petrus autem ait illi: Et si omnes scandalizati fuerint in te: sed non ego.
But Peter said to him, “Even if everyone else falls away, I will not.”
30 Et ait illi Iesus: Amen dico tibi, quia tu hodie in nocte hac, priusquam gallus vocem bis dederit, ter me es negaturus.
Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to yoʋ that today, on this night, before a rooster crows twice, yoʋ will deny me three times.”
31 At ille amplius loquebatur: Et si oportuerit me simul commori tibi, non te negabo: Similiter autem et omnes dicebant.
But Peter said all the more vehemently, “Even if I must die with yoʋ, I will certainly not deny yoʋ.” And they all said the same thing.
32 Et veniunt in praedium, cui nomen Gethsemani. Et ait discipulis suis: Sedete hic donec orem.
Then they went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray.”
33 Et assumit Petrum, et Iacobum, et Ioannem secum: et coepit pavere, et taedere.
He took with him Peter, James, and John, and began to be greatly disturbed and distressed.
34 Et ait illis: Tristis est anima mea usque ad mortem: sustinete hic, et vigilate.
He said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to the point of death; stay here and keep watch.”
35 Et cum processisset paululum, procidit super terram: et orabat, ut si fieri posset, transiret ab eo hora:
Going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.
36 et dixit: Abba pater, omnia tibi possibilia sunt, transfer calicem hunc a me, sed non quod ego volo, sed quod tu.
He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for yoʋ. Take this cup away from me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what yoʋ will.”
37 Et venit, et invenit eos dormientes. Et ait Petro: Simon, dormis? non potuisti una hora vigilare?
Then he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “Simon, are yoʋ sleeping? Could yoʋ not keep watch for one hour?
38 Vigilate, et orate ut non intretis in tentationem. Spiritus quidem promptus est, caro vero infirma.
Keep watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39 Et iterum abiens oravit eundem sermonem dicens.
Once again he went away and prayed the same prayer.
40 Et reversus, denuo invenit eos dormientes, (erant enim oculi eorum gravati) et ignorabant quid responderent ei.
When he returned, he found them sleeping again, for their eyes were heavy, and they did not know what to say in response.
41 Et venit tertio, et ait illis: Dormite iam, et requiescite. Sufficit: venit hora: ecce Filius hominis tradetur in manus peccatorum.
Then he came a third time and said to them, “Sleep on now and take your rest! It is enough; the hour has come. Behold, the Son of Man is delivered up into the hands of sinners.
42 Surgite, eamus. ecce qui me tradet, prope est.
Rise, let us go! Behold, my betrayer has drawn near.”
43 Et, adhuc eo loquente, venit Iudas Iscariotes unus de duodecim, et cum eo turba multa cum gladiis, et lignis, missi a summis sacerdotibus, et Scribis, et senioribus.
Immediately, as he was still speaking, Judas arrived, who was one of the twelve. With him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.
44 Dederat autem traditor eius signum eis, dicens: Quemcumque osculatus fuero, ipse est, tenete eum, et ducite caute.
Now his betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, he is the one; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”
45 Et cum venisset, statim accedens ad eum, ait: Ave Rabbi: et osculatus est eum.
When Judas came, he immediately went up to Jesus and said to him, “Rabbi! Rabbi!” And he kissed him.
46 At illi manus iniecerunt in Iesum, et tenuerunt eum.
Then they took hold of Jesus and arrested him.
47 Unus autem quidam de circumstantibus educens gladium, percussit servum summi sacerdotis: et amputavit illi auriculam.
But one of the bystanders drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
48 Et respondens Iesus, ait illis: Tamquam ad latronem existis cum gladiis, et lignis comprehendere me?
Then Jesus said to them, “Have you come out to arrest me with swords and clubs as you would against a robber?
49 quotidie eram apud vos in templo docens, et non me tenuistis. Sed ut impleantur Scripturae.
I was with you daily, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But these things are happening so that the Scriptures may be fulfilled.”
50 Tunc discipuli eius relinquentes eum, omnes fugerunt.
Then they all left him and fled.
51 Adolescens autem quidam sequebatur eum amictus sindone super nudo: et tenuerunt eum.
Now a certain young man was following Jesus, wearing nothing but a linen cloth. The young men tried to seize him,
52 At ille reiecta sindone, nudus profugit ab eis.
but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away from them naked.
53 Et adduxerunt Iesum ad summum sacerdotem: et convenerunt omnes sacerdotes, et Scribae, et seniores.
Then they led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were assembled together with him.
54 Petrus autem a longe secutus est eum usque intro in atrium summi sacerdotis: et sedebat cum ministris ad ignem, et calefaciebat se.
Peter had followed Jesus at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the officers, warming himself in the light of the fire.
55 Summi vero sacerdotes, et omne concilium quaerebant adversus Iesum testimonium, ut eum morti traderent, nec inveniebant.
Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.
56 Multi enim testimonium falsum dicebant adversus eum: et convenientia testimonia non erant.
For many were giving false testimony against him, but their testimonies did not agree.
57 Et quidam surgentes, falsum testimonium ferebant adversus eum, dicentes:
Then some stood up and gave false testimony against him, declaring,
58 Quoniam nos audivimus eum dicentem: Ego dissolvam templum hoc manu factum, et post triduum aliud non manu factum aedificabo.
“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another that is not made with hands.’”
59 Et non erat conveniens testimonium illorum.
Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 Et exurgens summus sacerdos in medium, interrogavit Iesum, dicens: Non respondes quidquam ad ea, quae tibi obiiciuntur ab his?
Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Do yoʋ make no answer? What are these men testifying against yoʋ?”
61 Ille autem tacebat, et nihil respondit. Rursum summus sacerdos interrogabat eum, et dixit ei: Tu es Christus filius Dei benedicti?
But he was silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are yoʋ the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62 Iesus autem dixit illi: Ego sum: et videbitis Filium hominis sedentem a dextris virtutis Dei, et venientem cum nubibus caeli.
Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
63 Summus autem sacerdos scindens vestimenta sua, ait: Quid adhuc desideramus testes?
Then the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further need do we have of witnesses?
64 Audistis blasphemiam: quid vobis videtur? Qui omnes condemnaverunt eum esse reum mortis.
You have heard his blasphemy. What seems right to you?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.
65 Et coeperunt quidam conspuere eum, et velare faciem eius, et colaphis eum caedere, et dicere ei: Prophetiza: et ministri alapis eum caedebant.
Then some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to beat him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the officers kept striking him with the palms of their hands.
66 Et cum esset Petrus in atrio deorsum, venit una ex ancillis summi sacerdotis:
Now as Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the servant girls of the high priest came.
67 et cum vidisset Petrum calefacientem se, aspiciens illum, ait: Et tu cum Iesu Nazareno eras.
When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “Yoʋ also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”
68 At ille negavit, dicens: Neque scio, neque novi quid dicas. Et exiit foras ante atrium, et gallus cantavit.
But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what yoʋ are talking about!” Then he went outside to the gateway, and a rooster crowed.
69 Rursus autem cum vidisset illum ancilla, coepit dicere circumstantibus: Quia hic ex illis est.
When the servant girl saw him again, she began saying to those who were standing nearby, “This man is one of them.”
70 At ille iterum negavit. Et post pusillum rursus qui astabant, dicebant Petro: Vere ex illis es: nam et Galilaeus es.
But again he denied it. After a little while, those who were standing nearby said to Peter once again, “Truly yoʋ are one of them, for yoʋ also are a Galilean, and yoʋr accent is like theirs.”
71 Ille autem coepit anathematizare, et iurare: Quia nescio hominem istum, quem dicitis.
But he began to invoke curses and to swear: “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”
72 Et statim gallus iterum cantavit. Et recordatus est Petrus verbi, quod dixerat ei Iesus: Prius quam gallus cantet bis, ter me negabis. Et coepit flere.
Then a rooster crowed a second time, and Peter remembered what Jesus had said to him: “Before a rooster crows twice, yoʋ will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
