< Marcum 12 >

1 Et coepit illis in parabolis loqui: Vineam pastinavit homo, et circumdedit sepem, et fodit lacum, et aedificavit turrim, et locavit eam agricolis, et peregre profectus est.
AND he began to speak to them in parables. A man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and digged a wine-press, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went abroad.
2 Et misit ad agricolas in tempore servum ut ab agricolis acciperet de fructu vineae.
And in the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
3 Qui apprehensum eum ceciderunt, et dimiserunt vacuum.
But they took him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.
4 Et iterum misit ad illos alium servum: et illum in capite vulneraverunt, et contumeliis affecerunt.
And again he sent unto them another servant; and they cut the account short with him, by stoning him, and sent him away shamefully treated.
5 Et rursum alium misit, et illum occiderunt: et plures alios: quosdam caedentes, alios vero occidentes.
And again he sent another; and him, they slew; and many others, some of whom they beat, and others they killed.
6 Adhuc ergo unum habens filium charissimum: et illum misit ad eos novissimum, dicens: Quia reverebuntur filium meum.
Now he had yet one son, his beloved, and he sent him unto them last, saying, They will reverence my son.
7 Coloni autem dixerunt ad invicem: Hic est heres: venite, occidamus eum: et nostra erit hereditas.
But these husbandmen said to each other, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be our own.
8 Et apprehendentes eum, occiderunt: et eiecerunt extra vineam.
And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
9 Quid ergo faciet Dominus vineae? Veniet, et perdet colonos: et dabit vineam aliis.
What then will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and give his vineyard to others.
10 Nec scripturam hanc legistis: Lapidem, quem reprobaverunt aedificantes, hic factus est in caput anguli:
Have ye never read this scripture? “The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner:
11 A Domino factum est istud, et est mirabile in oculis nostris?
this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes.”
12 Et quaerebant eum tenere: et timuerunt turbam. cognoverunt enim quoniam ad eos parabolam hanc dixerit. Et relicto eo abierunt.
And they sought to seize him, and were afraid of the people: for they knew that he had spoken this parable against them: and leaving him, they departed.
13 Et mittunt ad eum quosdam ex Pharisaeis, et Herodianis, ut eum caperent in verbo.
And they sent unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, that they might entrap him in discourse.
14 Qui venientes dicunt ei: Magister, scimus quia verax es, et non curas quemquam: nec enim vides in faciem hominum, sed in veritate viam Dei doces. licet dare tributum Caesari, an non dabimus?
And they come and say to him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest not for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not?
15 Qui sciens versutiam illorum, ait illos: Quid me tentatis? afferte mihi denarium ut videam.
shall we pay, or shall we not pay it? but he, perceiving their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a denarius, that I may see it.
16 At illi attulerunt ei. Et ait illis: Cuius est imago haec, et inscriptio? Dicunt ei: Caesaris.
And they brought it. And he said unto them, Whose figure and inscription is this? they say unto him, Caesar’s.
17 Respondens autem Iesus dixit illis: Reddite igitur quae sunt Caesaris, Caesari: et quae sunt Dei, Deo. Et mirabantur super eo.
And Jesus addressing them, said, Render the things which are Caesar’s, to Caesar; and what belongs to God, to God. And they marvelled at him.
18 Et venerunt ad eum Sadducaei, qui dicunt resurrectionem non esse: et interrogabant eum dicentes:
And the Sadducees come to him, who say that there is no resurrection; and they put a question to him, saying,
19 Magister, Moyses nobis scripsit, ut si cuius frater mortuus fuerit, et dimiserit uxorem, et filios non reliquerit, accipiat frater eius uxorem ipsius, et resuscitet semen fratri suo.
Master, Moses left it in writing for us, that if a man’s brother die, and leave a wife, and leave no children; that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed for his brother.
20 Septem ergo fratres erant: et primus accepit uxorem, et mortuus est non relicto semine.
Now there were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and dying left no issue:
21 Et secundus accepit eam, et mortuus est: et nec iste reliquit semen. Et tertius similiter.
and the second took her, and died, and neither did he leave issue; and the third in like manner.
22 Et acceperunt eam similiter septem: et non reliquerunt semen. Novissima omnium defuncta est et mulier.
And the seven had her, and left no issue. Last of all died also the wife.
23 In resurrectione ergo cum resurrexerint, cuius de his erit uxor? septem enim habuerunt eam uxorem.
In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife of them shall she be? for the seven had the very same wife.
24 Et respondens Iesus, ait illis: Nonne ideo erratis, non scientes Scripturas, neque virtutem Dei?
And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, from not knowing the scriptures, and the power of God?
25 Cum enim a mortuis resurrexerint, neque nubent, neque nubentur, sed erunt sicut angeli Dei in caelis.
For when they rise from the dead, they will neither marry, nor be given in marriage; but they are as the angels which are in heaven.
26 De mortuis autem quod resurgant, non legistis in libro Moysi, super rubum quomodo dixerit illi Deus, inquiens: Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Iacob?
But concerning the dead, that they do rise; have ye not read in the book of Moses, how God spake to him at the bush, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
27 Non est Deus mortuorum, sed vivorum. Vos ergo multum erratis.
He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. Ye are therefore vastly erroneous.
28 Et accessit unus de Scribis, qui audierat illos conquirentes, et videns quoniam bene illis responderit, interrogavit eum quod esset primum omnium mandatum.
And one of the scribes coming, and hearing them questioning him, perceiving that he had answered them admirably, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
29 Iesus autem respondit ei: Quia primum omnium mandatum est: Audi Israel, Dominus Deus tuus, Deus unus est:
Then Jesus replied to him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear O Israel; the Lord thy God is one Lord:
30 et diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex tota corde tuo, et ex tota anima tua, et ex tota mente tua, et ex tota virtute tua. Hoc est primum mandatum.
and thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment.
31 Secundum autem simile est illi: Diliges proximum tuum tamquam teipsum. Maius horum aliud mandatum non est.
And the second, like it, is this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: there is no greater commandment than these.
32 Et ait illi Scriba: Bene Magister, in veritate dixisti, quia unus est Deus, et non est alius praeter eum.
And the scribe said unto him, Admirably, Master! thou hast spoken the very truth: for there is one God; and there is no other besides him:
33 Et ut diligatur ex toto corde, et ex toto intellectu, et ex tota anima, et ex tota fortitudine: et diligere proximum tamquam seipsum, maius est omnibus holocaustomatibus, et sacrificiis.
and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength; and to love his neighbour as himself, is better than all burnt offerings, and sacrifices.
34 Iesus autem videns quod sapienter respondisset, dixit illi: Non es longe a regno Dei. Et nemo iam audebat eum interrogare.
And Jesus perceiving that he had answered as a man of intelligence, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man thenceforth presumed to question him.
35 Et respondens Iesus dicebat, docens in templo: Quomodo dicunt Scribae Christum filium esse David?
And Jesus addressing them said, as he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that the Messiah is the Son of David?
36 Ipse enim David dicit in Spiritu sancto: Dixit Dominus Domino meo, Sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum.
for David himself saith by the Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thy enemies the foot-stool for thy feet.
37 Ipse ergo David dicit eum Dominum, et unde est filius eius? Et multa turba eum libenter audivit.
David himself therefore calleth him Lord; and whence then is he his son? And a vast multitude heard him with delight.
38 Et dicebat eis in doctrina sua: Cavete a Scribis, qui volunt in stolis ambulare, et salutari in foro,
And he spake to them in the course of his teaching, Beware of the scribes, who love to go about in trailing robes, and like salutations in the places of concourse,
39 et in primis cathedris sedere in synagogis, et primos discubitus in coenis:
and the principal seats in the synagogues, and the first couch at suppers:
40 qui devorant domos viduarum sub obtentu prolixae orationis: hi accipient prolixius iudicium.
who devour widows’ houses, and in pretence make long prayers: such shall receive greater damnation.
41 Et sedens Iesus contra gazophylacium, aspiciebat quomodo turba iactaret aes in gazophylacium, et multi divites iactabant multa.
And as Jesus was sitting opposite the treasury, he saw a multitude casting money into the treasury: and many who were rich cast in many pieces.
42 Cum venisset autem vidua una pauper, misit duo minuta, quod est quadrans,
And one poor widow coming, cast in two mites, which is a farthing.
43 et convocans discipulos suos, ait illis: Amen dico vobis, quoniam vidua haec pauper plus omnibus misit, qui miserunt in gazophylacium.
And having called his disciples, he said unto them, I tell you truly, that this poor widow hath cast in more than all who have cast into the treasury:
44 Omnes enim ex eo, quod abundabat illis, miserunt: haec vero de penuria sua omnia quae habuit misit totum victum suum.
for all they have cast in of their superfluities; but she from her indigence hath cast in all that she had, even her whole substance.
