Iohannem 6
1 Post haec abiit Iesus trans mare Galilaeae, quod est Tiberiadis:
After these things, Jesus went away to the other side of the sea of Galilee, which is also called the Sea of Tiberias.
2 et sequebatur eum multitudo magna, quia videbant signa, quae faciebat super his, qui infirmabantur.
A great multitude followed him, because they saw his signs which he did on those who were sick.
3 Subiit ergo in montem Iesus: et ibi sedebat cum discipulis suis.
Jesus went up into the mountain, and he sat there with his disciples.
4 Erat autem proximum Pascha dies festus Iudaeorum.
Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.
5 Cum sublevasset ergo oculos Iesus, et vidisset quia multitudo maxima venit ad eum, dixit ad Philippum: Unde ememus panes, ut manducent hi?
Jesus therefore, lifting up his eyes and seeing that a great multitude was coming to him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, that these may eat?”
6 Hoc autem dicebat tentans eum: ipse enim sciebat quid esset facturus.
He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.
7 Respondit ei Philippus: Ducentorum denariorum panes non sufficiunt eis, ut unusquisque modicum quid accipiat.
Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may receive a little.”
8 Dicit ei unus ex discipulis eius, Andreas frater Simonis Petri:
One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,
9 Est puer unus hic, qui habet quinque panes ordeaceos, et duos pisces: sed haec quid sunt inter tantos?
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?”
10 Dixit ergo Iesus: Facite homines discumbere. Erat autem foenum multum in loco. Discumberunt ergo viri, numero quasi quinque millia.
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in that place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11 Accepit ergo Iesus panes: et cum gratias egisset, distribuit discumbentibus: similiter et ex piscibus quantum volebant.
Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down, likewise also of the fish as much as they desired.
12 Ut autem impleti sunt, dixit discipulis suis: Colligite quae superaverunt fragmenta, ne pereant.
When they were filled, he said to his disciples, “Gather up the broken pieces which are left over, that nothing be lost.”
13 Collegerunt ergo, et impleverunt duodecim cophinos fragmentorum ex quinque panibus ordeaceis, et duobus piscibius quae superfuerunt his, qui manducaverant.
So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten.
14 Illi ergo homines cum vidissent quod Iesus fecerat signum, dicebant: Quia hic est vere propheta, qui venturus est in mundum.
When therefore the people saw the sign which Jesus did, they said, “This is truly the prophet who comes into the world.”
15 Iesus ergo cum cognovisset quia venturi essent ut raperent eum, et facerent eum regem, fugit iterum in montem ipse solus.
Jesus therefore, perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.
16 Ut autem sero factum est, descenderunt discipuli eius ad mare.
When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea.
17 Et cum ascendissent navim, venerunt trans mare in Capharnaum: et tenebrae iam factae erant: et non venerat ad eos Iesus.
They entered into the boat, and were going over the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not come to them.
18 Mare autem, vento magno flante, exurgebat.
The sea was tossed by a great wind blowing.
19 Cum remigassent ergo quasi stadia viginti quinque aut triginta, vident Iesum ambulantem supra mare, et proximum navi fieri, et timuerunt.
When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were afraid.
20 Ille autem dicit eis: Ego sum, nolite timere.
But he said to them, “It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
21 Voluerunt ergo accipere eum in navim: et statim navis fuit ad terram, in quam ibant.
They were willing therefore to receive him into the boat. Immediately the boat was at the land where they were going.
22 Altera die, turba, quae stabat trans mare, vidit quia navicula alia non erat ibi nisi una, et quia non introisset cum discipulis suis Iesus in navim, sed soli discipuli eius abiissent:
On the next day, the multitude that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other boat there, except the one in which his disciples had embarked, and that Jesus hadn’t entered with his disciples into the boat, but his disciples had gone away alone.
23 aliae vero supervenerunt naves a Tiberiade iuxta locum ubi manducaverunt panem, gratias agentes Deo.
However, boats from Tiberias came near to the place where they ate the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
24 Cum ergo vidisset turba quia Iesus non esset ibi, neque discipuli eius, ascenderunt in naviculas, et venerunt Capharnaum quaerentes Iesum.
When the multitude therefore saw that Jesus wasn’t there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
25 Et cum invenissent eum trans mare, dixerunt ei: Rabbi, quando huc venisti?
When they found him on the other side of the sea, they asked him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?”
26 Respondit eis Iesus, et dixit: Amen, amen dico vobis: quaeritis me non quia vidistis signa, sed quia manducastis ex panibus, et saturati estis.
Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.
27 Operamini non cibum, qui perit, sed qui permanet in vitam aeternam, quem Filius hominis dabit vobis. Hunc enim Pater signavit Deus. (aiōnios g166)
Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him.” (aiōnios g166)
28 Dixerunt ergo ad eum: Quid faciemus ut operemur opera Dei?
They said therefore to him, “What must we do, that we may work the works of God?”
29 Respondit Iesus, et dixit eis: Hoc est opus Dei, ut credatis in eum quem misit ille.
Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
30 Dixerunt ergo ei: Quod ergo tu facis signum ut videamus, et credamus tibi? quid operaris?
They said therefore to him, “What then do you do for a sign, that we may see and believe you? What work do you do?
31 Patres nostri manducaverunt manna in deserto, sicut scriptum est: Panem de caelo dedit eis manducare.
Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness. As it is written, ‘He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’”
32 Dixit ergo eis Iesus: Amen, amen dico vobis: Non Moyses dedit vobis panem de caelo, sed Pater meus dat vobis panem de caelo verum.
Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, it wasn’t Moses who gave you the bread out of heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread out of heaven.
33 Panis enim verus est, qui de caelo descendit, et dat vitam mundo.
For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 Dixerunt ergo ad eum: Domine, semper da nobis panem hunc.
They said therefore to him, “Lord, always give us this bread.”
35 Dixit autem ei Iesus: Ego sum panis vitae: qui venit ad me, non esuriet: et qui credit in me, non sitiet in aeternum.
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
36 Sed dixi vobis quia et vidistis me, et non credidistis.
But I told you that you have seen me, and yet you don’t believe.
37 Omne quod dat mihi Pater, ad me veniet: et eum, qui venit ad me, non eiiciam foras:
All those whom the Father gives me will come to me. He who comes to me I will in no way throw out.
38 quia descendi de caelo, non ut faciam voluntatem meam, sed voluntatem eius, qui misit me.
For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
39 Haec est autem voluntas eius, qui misit me, Patris: ut omne, quod dedit mihi, non perdam ex eo, sed resuscitem illud in novissimo die.
This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day.
40 Haec est autem voluntas Patris mei, qui misit me: ut omnis, qui videt Filium, et credit in eum, habeat vitam aeternam, et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die. (aiōnios g166)
This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” (aiōnios g166)
41 Murmurabant ergo Iudaei de illo, quia dixisset: Ego sum panis vivus, qui de caelo descendi,
The Jews therefore murmured concerning him, because he said, “I am the bread which came down out of heaven.”
42 et dicebant: Nonne hic est Iesus filius Ioseph, cuius nos novimus patrem, et matrem? Quomodo ergo dicit hic: Quia de caelo descendi?
They said, “Isn’t this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”
43 Respondit ergo Iesus, et dixit eis: Nolite murmurare in invicem:
Therefore Jesus answered them, “Don’t murmur among yourselves.
44 nemo potest venire ad me, nisi Pater, qui misit me, traxerit eum: et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die.
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up in the last day.
45 Est scriptum in Prophetis: Et erunt omnes docibiles Dei. Omnis, qui audivit a Patre, et didicit, venit ad me.
It is written in the prophets, ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who hears from the Father and has learned, comes to me.
46 Non quia Patrem vidit quisquam, nisi is, qui est a Deo, hic vidit Patrem.
Not that anyone has seen the Father, except he who is from God. He has seen the Father.
Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me has eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
48 Ego sum panis vitae.
I am the bread of life.
49 Patres vestri manducaverunt manna in deserto, et mortui sunt.
Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and they died.
50 Hic est panis de caelo descendens: ut si quis ex ipso manducaverit, non moriatur.
This is the bread which comes down out of heaven, that anyone may eat of it and not die.
51 Ego sum panis vivus, qui de caelo descendi. Si quis manducaverit ex hoc pane, vivet in aeternum: et panis, quem ego dabo, caro mea est pro mundi vita. (aiōn g165)
I am the living bread which came down out of heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. Yes, the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (aiōn g165)
52 Litigabant ergo Iudaei ad invicem, dicentes: Quomodo potest hic nobis carnem suam dare ad manducandum?
The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
53 Dixit ergo eis Iesus: Amen, amen dico vobis: Nisi manducaveritis carnem Filii hominis, et biberitis eius sanguinem, non habebitis vitam in vobis.
Jesus therefore said to them, “Most certainly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you don’t have life in yourselves.
54 Qui manducat meam carnem, et bibit meum sanguinem, habet vitam aeternam: et ego resuscitabo eum in novissimo die. (aiōnios g166)
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. (aiōnios g166)
55 Caro enim mea, vere est cibus: et sanguis meus, vere est potus.
For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 qui manducat meam carnem, et bibit meum sanguinem, in me manet, et ego in illo.
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood lives in me, and I in him.
57 Sicut misit me vivens Pater, et ego vivo propter Patrem: et qui manducat me, et ipse vivet propter me.
As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on me will also live because of me.
58 Hic est panis, qui de caelo descendit. Non sicut manducaverunt patres vestri manna, et mortui sunt. Qui manducat hunc panem, vivet in aeternum. (aiōn g165)
This is the bread which came down out of heaven—not as our fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread will live forever.” (aiōn g165)
59 Haec dixit in synagoga docens, in Capharnaum.
He said these things in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.
60 Multi ergo audientes ex discipulis eius, dixerunt: Durus est hic sermo, et quis potest eum audire?
Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying! Who can listen to it?”
61 Sciens autem Iesus apud semetipsum quia murmurarent de hoc discipuli eius, dixit eis: Hoc vos scandalizat?
But Jesus knowing in himself that his disciples murmured at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?
62 Si ergo videritis Filium hominis ascendentem ubi erat prius?
Then what if you would see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?
63 Spiritus est, qui vivificat: caro non prodest quidquam. verba, quae ego locutus sum vobis, spiritus et vita sunt.
It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
64 Sed sunt quidam ex vobis, qui non credunt. Sciebat enim ab initio Iesus qui essent credentes, et quis traditurus esset eum.
But there are some of you who don’t believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who didn’t believe, and who it was who would betray him.
65 Et dicebat: Propterea dixi vobis, quia nemo potest venire ad me, nisi fuerit ei datum a Patre meo.
He said, “For this cause I have said to you that no one can come to me, unless it is given to him by my Father.”
66 Ex hoc multi discipulorum eius abierunt retro: et iam non cum illo ambulabant.
At this, many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.
67 Dixit ergo Iesus ad duodecim: Numquid et vos vultis abire?
Jesus said therefore to the twelve, “You don’t also want to go away, do you?”
68 Respondit ergo ei Simon Petrus: Domine, ad quem ibimus? verba vitae aeternae habes. (aiōnios g166)
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
69 et nos credimus, et cognovimus quia tu es Christus Filius Dei.
We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
70 Respondit eis Iesus: Nonne ego vos duodecim elegi: et ex vobis unus diabolus est?
Jesus answered them, “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?”
71 Dicebat autem de Iuda Simonis Iscariotis: hic enim erat traditurus eum, cum esset unus ex duodecim.
Now he spoke of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for it was he who would betray him, being one of the twelve.
