テトスへの手紙 1
1 神のしもべ、また、イエス・キリストの使徒パウロ――私は、神に選ばれた人々の信仰と、敬虔にふさわしい真理の知識とのために使徒とされたのです。
Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; (aiōnios g166)
3 神は、ご自分の定められた時に、このみことばを宣教によって明らかにされました。私は、この宣教を私たちの救い主なる神の命令によって、ゆだねられたのです。――このパウロから、
But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
4 同じ信仰による真実のわが子テトスへ。父なる神および私たちの救い主なるキリスト・イエスから、恵みと平安がありますように。
To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.
5 私があなたをクレテに残したのは、あなたが残っている仕事の整理をし、また、私が指図したように、町ごとに長老たちを任命するためでした。
For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
6 それには、その人が、非難されるところがなく、ひとりの妻の夫であり、その子どもは不品行を責められたり、反抗的であったりしない信者であることが条件です。
If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
7 監督は神の家の管理者として、非難されるところのない者であるべきです。わがままでなく、短気でなく、酒飲みでなく、けんか好きでなく、不正な利を求めず、
For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
8 かえって、旅人をよくもてなし、善を愛し、慎み深く、正しく、敬虔で、自制心があり、
But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
9 教えにかなった信頼すべきみことばを、しっかりと守っていなければなりません。それは健全な教えをもって励ましたり、反対する人たちを正したりすることができるためです。
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
10 実は、反抗的な者、空論に走る者、人を惑わす者が多くいます。特に、割礼を受けた人々がそうです。
For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision:
11 彼らの口を封じなければいけません。彼らは、不正な利を得るために、教えてはいけないことを教え、家々を破壊しています。
Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre’s sake.
12 彼らと同国人であるひとりの預言者がこう言いました。 「クレテ人は昔からのうそつき、 悪いけだもの、 なまけ者の食いしんぼう。」
One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.
13 この証言はほんとうなのです。ですから、きびしく戒めて、人々の信仰を健全にし、
This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
14 ユダヤ人の空想話や、真理から離れた人々の戒めには心を寄せないようにさせなさい。
Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.
15 きよい人々には、すべてのものがきよいのです。しかし、汚れた、不信仰な人々には、何一つきよいものはありません。それどころか、その知性と良心までも汚れています。
Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
16 彼らは、神を知っていると口では言いますが、行ないでは否定しています。実に忌まわしく、不従順で、どんな良いわざにも不適格です。
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
