ピリピ人への手紙 1

1 キリスト・イエスのしもべであるパウロとテモテから、ピリピにいるキリスト・イエスにあるすべての聖徒たち、また監督と執事たちへ。

Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

2 どうか、私たちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安があなたがたの上にありますように。

Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 私は、あなたがたのことを思うごとに私の神に感謝し、

I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

4 あなたがたすべてのために祈るごとに、いつも喜びをもって祈り、

Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy,

5 あなたがたが、最初の日から今日まで、福音を広めることにあずかって来たことを感謝しています。

For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now;

6 あなたがたのうちに良い働きを始められた方は、キリスト・イエスの日が来るまでにそれを完成させてくださることを私は堅く信じているのです。

Being confident of this very thing, that he which has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

7 私があなたがたすべてについてこのように考えるのは正しいのです。あなたがたはみな、私が投獄されているときも、福音を弁明し立証しているときも、私とともに恵みにあずかった人々であり、私は、そのようなあなたがたを、心に覚えているからです。

Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel, all of you all are partakers of my grace.

8 私が、キリスト・イエスの愛の心をもって、どんなにあなたがたすべてを慕っているか、そのあかしをしてくださるのは神です。

For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.

9 私は祈っています。あなたがたの愛が真の知識とあらゆる識別力によって、いよいよ豊かになり、

And this I pray, that your love (agape) may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

10 あなたがたが、真にすぐれたものを見分けることができるようになりますように。またあなたがたが、キリストの日には純真で非難されるところがなく、

That all of you may approve things that are excellent; that all of you may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.

11 イエス・キリストによって与えられる義の実に満たされている者となり、神の御栄えと誉れが現わされますように。

Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

12 さて、兄弟たち。私の身に起こったことが、かえって福音を前進させることになったのを知ってもらいたいと思います。

But I would all of you should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

13 私がキリストのゆえに投獄されている、ということは、親衛隊の全員と、そのほかのすべての人にも明らかになり、

So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;

14 また兄弟たちの大多数は、私が投獄されたことにより、主にあって確信を与えられ、恐れることなく、ますます大胆に神のことばを語るようになりました。

And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word (logos) without fear.

15 人々の中にはねたみや争いをもってキリストを宣べ伝える者もいますが、善意をもってする者もいます。

Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

16 一方の人たちは愛をもってキリストを伝え、私が福音を弁証するために立てられていることを認めていますが、

The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

17 他の人たちは純真な動機からではなく、党派心をもって、キリストを宣べ伝えており、投獄されている私をさらに苦しめるつもりなのです。

But the other of love, (agape) knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel.

18 すると、どういうことになりますか。つまり、見せかけであろうとも、真実であろうとも、あらゆるしかたで、キリストが宣べ伝えられているのであって、このことを私は喜んでいます。そうです、今からも喜ぶことでしょう。

What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

19 というわけは、あなたがたの祈りとイエス・キリストの御霊の助けによって、このことが私の救いとなることを私は知っているからです。

For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit (pneuma) of Jesus Christ,

20 それは、私がどういうばあいにも恥じることなく、いつものように今も大胆に語って、生きるにしても、死ぬにしても、私の身によって、キリストのすばらしさが現わされることを求める私の切なる願いと望みにかなっているのです。

According to my earn expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

21 私にとっては、生きることはキリスト、死ぬこともまた益です。

In order to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

22 しかし、もしこの肉体のいのちが続くとしたら、私の働きが豊かな実を結ぶことになるので、どちらを選んだらよいのか、私にはわかりません。

But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I know not.

23 私は、その二つのものの間に板ばさみとなっています。私の願いは、世を去ってキリストとともにいることです。実はそのほうが、はるかにまさっています。

For I am in a strait between two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better:

24 しかし、この肉体にとどまることが、あなたがたのためには、もっと必要です。

Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more necessary for you.

25 私はこのことを確信していますから、あなたがたの信仰の進歩と喜びとのために、私が生きながらえて、あなたがたすべてといっしょにいるようになることを知っています。

And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;

26 そうなれば、私はもう一度あなたがたのところに行けるので、私のことに関するあなたがたの誇りは、キリスト・イエスにあって増し加わるでしょう。

That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again.

27 ただ、キリストの福音にふさわしく生活しなさい。そうすれば、私が行ってあなたがたに会うにしても、また離れているにしても、私はあなたがたについて、こう聞くことができるでしょう。あなたがたは霊を一つにしてしっかりと立ち、心を一つにして福音の信仰のために、ともに奮闘しており、

Only let your conversation be as it becomes the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that all of you stand fast in one spirit, (pneuma) with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

28 また、どんなことがあっても、反対者たちに驚かされることはないと。それは、彼らにとっては滅びのしるしであり、あなたがたにとっては救いのしるしです。これは神から出たことです。

And in nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God.

29 あなたがたは、キリストのために、キリストを信じる信仰だけでなく、キリストのための苦しみをも賜わったのです。

For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

30 あなたがたは、私について先に見たこと、また、私についていま聞いているのと同じ戦いを経験しているのです。

Having the same conflict which all of you saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
