ヤコブの手紙 2
1 我兄弟等よ、汝等光榮なる我主イエズス、キリストに於る信仰を保ちて、人に依怙ある事勿れ。
My brethren, hold not the faith of our Lord of glory, Jesus Christ, with respect of persons.
2 蓋汝等の集に美服して金の指環を嵌めたる人入來り、又粗服したる貧しき人入來らんに、
For if there come into your assembly a man with a gold ring, in splendid apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment,
3 汝等美服したる人を顧みて、宜しく此處に坐せよと言ひ、貧しき人には、其處に立て或は我が足台の下に坐せよ、と言はば、
and ye have respect to him that weareth the splendid apparel, and say, Sit thou here in a good place, and say to the poor man, Stand thou there, or, Sit under my footstool,
4 是心の中に隔して料簡正しからざる審判者と成るに非ずや。
have ye not been partial among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
5 我至愛なる兄弟等よ、聞け、神は此世に於る貧者を選みて信仰に富める者と成らしめ、神が己を愛し奉る人々に約し給ひし國の世嗣たらしめ給ひしに非ずや。
Hearken, my beloved brethren. Did not God choose the poor as to the world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him?
6 然るに汝等は貧者を卑しめたり。富者は勢力を以て汝等を壓し、且自ら法廷に牽くに非ずや、
but ye have despised the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and do not they drag you before the judgment-seats?
7 汝等の上に稱へられたる善き名を穢すに非ずや。
Do not they blaspheme the worthy name by which ye are called?
8 但し汝等もし聖書に從ひて、「汝己が近き者を己の如く愛せよ」との王的律法を守らば、其為す所や宜し。
If indeed ye fulfill the royal law, according to the scripture, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself,” ye do well.
9 然れど若人に對して依怙あらば、是罪を犯して、犯人として律法に咎めらるるなり。
But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.
10 其は誰にもあれ、律法を悉く守るも、一點の犯す所あらば、一切に對して有罪となればなり。
For whoever hath kept the whole law, and yet hath offended in one point, hath become guilty of all.
11 蓋、「汝姦淫する勿れ」と曰ひし者は又、「殺す勿れ」と曰ひしが故に、假令姦淫せざるも殺す事あらば、是律法の違反者たるなり。
For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” said also, “Do not kill.” Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou hast become a transgressor of the law.
12 然れば汝等語るにも行ふにも、恰も自由の律法を以て審判せらるべき者の如くにせよ。
So speak, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
13 蓋審判は慈悲を為さざる人に慈悲なき者にして、慈悲は審判に勝つものなり。
For the judgment shall be without mercy to him that showed no mercy. Mercy glorieth against judgment.
14 我兄弟等よ、假令人自ら信仰ありと謂ふとも、行なくば何の益かあらん、信仰豈之を救ふを得んや。
What doth it profit, my brethren, if any one say that he hath faith, and have not works? Can his faith save him?
15 若兄弟姉妹の赤裸にして日々の食物に乏しからんに、
If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 汝等の中彼等に對ひて、心安く往きて身を暖め、飽くまで食せよ、と言ふ人ありとも、身に要する物を與へずば何の益かあらん。
and one of you say to them, Depart in peace, be warmed and be filled, notwithstanding ye give them not the things needful for the body, what doth it profit?
17 信仰も亦斯くの如し、行なくば死したるものなり。
So also faith, if it hath not works, is dead in itself.
18 然るに人或は言はん、汝は信仰あり我は行あり、行なき汝の信仰を我に示せ、然らば我も亦行によりて我が信仰を汝に示さん、
But some one will say, Thou hast faith, and I have works; show me thy faith without works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.
19 汝は神の唯一にて在す事を信ず、其為す所や宜し、惡魔も信じて戰慄くなりと。
Thou believest that God is one; thou doest well; the demons also believe, and tremble.
20 空なる人よ、行なき信仰の死したるものなるを知らん事を欲するか、
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is idle?
21 我父アブラハムは、祭壇の上に其子イザアクを献げて、行によりて義とせられしに非ずや。
Was not Abraham our father accepted as righteous through works, when he offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 信仰が彼の行と共に働きし事と、行によりて信仰の全うせられし事とは汝の見る所なり。
Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect.
23 而して聖書に、「アブラハム神を信じたり、斯て此事義として彼に歸せられたり」と在ること成就し、彼は神の愛人とせられたり。
And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness;” and he was called the friend of God.
24 人の義とせらるるは、唯信仰のみに由らずして行に由るを見ずや。
Ye see that by works a man is accounted as righteous, and not by faith only.
25 是と等しく娼婦ラハブも、使等を承けて外の道より去らしめ、行によりて義とせられしに非ずや。
And in like manner was not also Rahab the harlot accounted as righteous through works, when she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?
26 蓋霊なき肉體の死せるが如く、行なき信仰も亦死せるなり。
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
