箴言 知恵の泉 25
1 これらもまたソロモンの箴言であり、ユダの王ヒゼキヤに属する人々がこれを書き写した。
These are also proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
2 事を隠すのは神の誉であり、事を窮めるのは王の誉である。
It is the glory of Elohim to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.
3 天の高さと地の深さと、王たる者の心とは測ることができない。
The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
4 銀から、かなくそを除け、そうすれば、銀細工人が器を造る材料となる。
Take away the dross from the silver, and there shall come forth a vessel for the finer.
5 王の前から悪しき者を除け、そうすれば、その位は正義によって堅く立つ。
Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.
6 王の前で自ら高ぶってはならない、偉い人の場に立ってはならない。
Put not forth thyself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men:
7 尊い人の前で下にさげられるよりは、「ここに上がれ」といわれるほうがましだ。
For better it is that it be said unto thee, Come up hither; than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince whom thine eyes have seen.
8 あなたが目に見たことを、軽々しく法廷に出してはならない。あとになり、あなたが隣り人にはずかしめられるとき、あなたはどうしようとするのか。
Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know not what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbour hath put thee to shame.
9 隣り人と争うことがあるならば、ただその人と争え、他人の秘密をもらしてはならない。
Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another:
10 そうでないと、聞く者があなたをいやしめ、あなたは、いつまでもそしられる。
Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away.
11 おりにかなって語る言葉は、銀の彫り物に金のりんごをはめたようだ。
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
12 知恵をもって戒める者は、これをきく者の耳にとって、金の耳輪、精金の飾りのようだ。
As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.
13 忠実な使者はこれをつかわす者にとって、刈入れの日に冷やかな雪があるようだ、よくその主人の心を喜ばせる。
As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters.
14 贈り物をすると偽って誇る人は、雨のない雲と風のようだ。
Whoso boasteth himself of a false gift is like clouds and wind without rain.
15 忍耐をもって説けば君も言葉をいれる、柔らかな舌は骨を砕く。
By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
16 蜜を得たならば、ただ足るほどにこれを食べよ、おそらくは食べすごして、それを吐き出すであろう。
Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee, lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.
17 隣り人の家に足をしげくしてはならない、おそらくは彼は煩わしくなって、あなたを憎むようになろう。
Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house; lest he be weary of thee, and so hate thee.
18 隣り人に敵して偽りのあかしを立てる人は、こん棒、つるぎ、または鋭い矢のようだ。
A man that beareth false witness against his neighbour is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.
19 悩みに会うとき不信実な者を頼みにするのは、悪い歯、またはなえた足を頼みとするようなものだ。
Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint.
20 心の痛める人の前で歌をうたうのは、寒い日に着物を脱ぐようであり、また傷の上に酢をそそぐようだ。
As he that taketh away a garment in cold weather, and as vinegar upon nitre, so is he that singeth songs to an heavy heart.
21 もしあなたのあだが飢えているならば、パンを与えて食べさせ、もしかわいているならば水を与えて飲ませよ。
If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
22 こうするのは、火を彼のこうべに積むのである、主はあなたに報いられる。
For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and YHWH shall reward thee.
23 北風は雨を起し、陰言をいう舌は人の顔を怒らす。
The north wind driveth away rain: so doth an angry countenance a backbiting tongue.
24 争いを好む女と一緒に家におるよりは、屋根のすみにおるほうがよい。
It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
25 遠い国から来るよい消息は、かわいている人が飲む冷やかな水のようだ。
As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.
26 正しい者が悪い者の前に屈服するのは、井戸が濁ったよう、また泉がよごれたようなものだ。
A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring.
27 蜜を多く食べるのはよくない、ほめる言葉は控え目にするがよい。
It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory.
28 自分の心を制しない人は、城壁のない破れた城のようだ。
He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.
