ピリピ人への手紙 1

1 キリスト・イエスの僕たち、パウロとテモテから、ピリピにいる、キリスト・イエスにあるすべての聖徒たち、ならびに監督たちと執事たちへ。

Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons:

2 わたしたちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 わたしはあなたがたを思うたびごとに、わたしの神に感謝し、

I give thanks to my God every time I remember you,

4 あなたがた一同のために祈るとき、いつも喜びをもって祈り、

always praying with joy in every one of my prayers for you all

5 あなたがたが最初の日から今日に至るまで、福音にあずかっていることを感謝している。

because of your partnership with me in the gospel from the first day until now.

6 そして、あなたがたのうちに良いわざを始められたかたが、キリスト・イエスの日までにそれを完成して下さるにちがいないと、確信している。

I am confident that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

7 わたしが、あなたがた一同のために、そう考えるのは当然である。それは、わたしが獄に捕われている時にも、福音を弁明し立証する時にも、あなたがたをみな、共に恵みにあずかる者として、わたしの心に深く留めているからである。

It is right for me to think this way about you all, since I have you in my heart. For you all share with me in God's grace, both in my imprisonment and in my defense and confirmation of the gospel.

8 わたしがキリスト・イエスの熱愛をもって、どんなに深くあなたがた一同を思っていることか、それを証明して下さるかたは神である。

For God is my witness that I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.

9 わたしはこう祈る。あなたがたの愛が、深い知識において、するどい感覚において、いよいよ増し加わり、

And I pray that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and all discernment,

10 それによって、あなたがたが、何が重要であるかを判別することができ、キリストの日に備えて、純真で責められるところのないものとなり、

so that you may approve what is excellent in order to be pure and blameless in the day of Christ,

11 イエス・キリストによる義の実に満たされて、神の栄光とほまれとをあらわすに至るように。

filled with the fruits of righteousness that come through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

12 さて、兄弟たちよ。わたしの身に起った事が、むしろ福音の前進に役立つようになったことを、あなたがたに知ってもらいたい。

Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has actually helped advance the gospel,

13 すなわち、わたしが獄に捕われているのはキリストのためであることが、兵営全体にもそのほかのすべての人々にも明らかになり、

so that it has become known among the entire imperial guard and to everyone else that my imprisonment is for Christ.

14 そして兄弟たちのうち多くの者は、わたしの入獄によって主にある確信を得、恐れることなく、ますます勇敢に、神の言を語るようになった。

And the greater part of the brothers in the Lord have gained confidence through my imprisonment and are far more bold to speak the word without fear.

15 一方では、ねたみや闘争心からキリストを宣べ伝える者がおり、他方では善意からそうする者がいる。

Some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others do it out of good will.

16 後者は、わたしが福音を弁明するために立てられていることを知り、愛の心でキリストを伝え、

The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but intending to add affliction to me in my imprisonment.

17 前者は、わたしの入獄の苦しみに更に患難を加えようと思って、純真な心からではなく、党派心からそうしている。

The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel.

18 すると、どうなのか。見えからであるにしても、真実からであるにしても、要するに、伝えられているのはキリストなのだから、わたしはそれを喜んでいるし、また喜ぶであろう。

But what does it matter? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice.

19 なぜなら、あなたがたの祈と、イエス・キリストの霊の助けとによって、この事がついには、わたしの救となることを知っているからである。

For I know that this will result in my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

20 そこで、わたしが切実な思いで待ち望むことは、わたしが、どんなことがあっても恥じることなく、かえって、いつものように今も、大胆に語ることによって、生きるにも死ぬにも、わたしの身によってキリストがあがめられることである。

My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be put to shame in anything, but will speak with complete boldness so that now, as always, Christ will be magnified in my body, whether I live or die.

21 わたしにとっては、生きることはキリストであり、死ぬことは益である。

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

22 しかし、肉体において生きていることが、わたしにとっては実り多い働きになるのだとすれば、どちらを選んだらよいか、わたしにはわからない。

But if I am to live in the flesh, it will mean fruit from my labor. Yet I do not know which I prefer.

23 わたしは、これら二つのものの間に板ばさみになっている。わたしの願いを言えば、この世を去ってキリストと共にいることであり、実は、その方がはるかに望ましい。

I am hard pressed between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

24 しかし、肉体にとどまっていることは、あなたがたのためには、さらに必要である。

But to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.

25 こう確信しているので、わたしは生きながらえて、あなたがた一同のところにとどまり、あなたがたの信仰を進ませ、その喜びを得させようと思う。

Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for the sake of your progress and joy in the faith,

26 そうなれば、わたしが再びあなたがたのところに行くので、あなたがたはわたしによってキリスト・イエスにある誇を増すことになろう。

so that your boasting may abound in Christ Jesus because of me when I come to you again.

27 ただ、あなたがたはキリストの福音にふさわしく生活しなさい。そして、わたしが行ってあなたがたに会うにしても、離れているにしても、あなたがたが一つの霊によって堅く立ち、一つ心になって福音の信仰のために力を合わせて戦い、

Only live as citizens in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving together with one mind for the faith of the gospel,

28 かつ、何事についても、敵対する者どもにろうばいさせられないでいる様子を、聞かせてほしい。このことは、彼らには滅びのしるし、あなたがたには救のしるしであって、それは神から来るのである。

and not being intimidated in any way by those who oppose you. For them this is an indication of destruction, but for you it is an indication of salvation, and that from God.

29 あなたがたはキリストのために、ただ彼を信じることだけではなく、彼のために苦しむことをも賜わっている。

For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,

30 あなたがたは、さきにわたしについて見、今またわたしについて聞いているのと同じ苦闘を、続けているのである。

since you are experiencing the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.
