1 時にシュヒびとビルダデが答えて言った、
Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said,
2 「いつまであなたは、そのような事を言うのか。あなたの口の言葉は荒い風ではないか。
How long wilt thou speak these things? and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?
3 神は公義を曲げられるであろうか。全能者は正義を曲げられるであろうか。
Doth El pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice?
4 あなたの子たちが彼に罪を犯したので、彼らをそのとがの手に渡されたのだ。
If thy children have sinned against him, and he have cast them away for their transgression;
5 あなたがもし神に求め、全能者に祈るならば、
If thou wouldest seek unto El betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty;
6 あなたがもし清く、正しくあるならば、彼は必ずあなたのために立って、あなたの正しいすみかを栄えさせられる。
If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.
7 あなたの初めは小さくあっても、あなたの終りは非常に大きくなるであろう。
Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.
8 先の代の人に問うてみよ、先祖たちの尋ねきわめた事を学べ。
For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers:
9 われわれはただ、きのうからあった者で、何も知らない、われわれの世にある日は、影のようなものである。
(For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow: )
10 彼らはあなたに教え、あなたに語り、その悟りから言葉を出さないであろうか。
Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?
11 紙草は泥のない所に生長することができようか。葦は水のない所におい茂ることができようか。
Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water?
12 これはなお青くて、まだ刈られないのに、すべての草に先だって枯れる。
Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other herb.
13 すべて神を忘れる者の道はこのとおりだ。神を信じない者の望みは滅びる。
So are the paths of all that forget El; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish:
14 その頼むところは断たれ、その寄るところは、くもの巣のようだ。
Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web.
15 その家によりかかろうとすれば、家は立たず、それにすがろうとしても、それは耐えない。
He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure.
16 彼は日の前に青々と茂り、その若枝を園にはびこらせ、
He is green before the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden.
17 その根を石塚にからませ、岩の間に生きていても、
His roots are wrapped about the heap, and seeth the place of stones.
18 もしその所から取り除かれれば、その所は彼を拒んで言うであろう、『わたしはあなたを見たことがない』と。
If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.
19 見よ、これこそ彼の道の喜びである、そしてほかの者が地から生じるであろう。
Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.
20 見よ、神は全き人を捨てられない。また悪を行う者の手を支持されない。
Behold, El will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:
21 彼は笑いをもってあなたの口を満たし、喜びの声をもってあなたのくちびるを満たされる。
Till he fill thy mouth with laughing, and thy lips with rejoicing.
22 あなたを憎む者は恥を着せられ、悪しき者の天幕はなくなる」。
They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.
