1 あなたはつり針でわにをつり出すことができるか。糸でその舌を押えることができるか。
Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?
2 あなたは葦のなわをその鼻に通すことができるか。つり針でそのあごを突き通すことができるか。
Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn?
3 これはしきりに、あなたに願い求めるであろうか。柔らかな言葉をあなたに語るであろうか。
Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?
4 これはあなたと契約を結ぶであろうか。あなたはこれを取って、ながくあなたのしもべとすることができるであろうか。
Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?
5 あなたは鳥と戯れるようにこれと戯れ、またあなたのおとめたちのために、これをつないでおくことができるであろうか。
Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
6 商人の仲間はこれを商品として、小売商人の間に分けるであろうか。
Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants?
7 あなたは、もりでその皮を満たし、やすでその頭を突き通すことができるか。
Canst thou fill his skin with barbed iron? or his head with fish spears?
8 あなたの手をこれの上に置け、あなたは戦いを思い出して、再びこれをしないであろう。
Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.
9 見よ、その望みはむなしくなり、これを見てすら倒れる。
Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?
10 あえてこれを激する勇気のある者はひとりもない。それで、だれがわたしの前に立つことができるか。
None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
11 だれが先にわたしに与えたので、わたしはこれに報いるのか。天が下にあるものは、ことごとくわたしのものだ。
Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
12 わたしはこれが全身と、その著しい力と、その美しい構造について黙っていることはできない。
I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.
13 だれがその上着をはぐことができるか。だれがその二重のよろいの間にはいることができるか。
Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?
14 だれがその顔の戸を開くことができるか。そのまわりの歯は恐ろしい。
Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.
15 その背は盾の列でできていて、その堅く閉じたさまは密封したように、
His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.
16 相互に密接して、風もその間に、はいることができず、
One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.
17 互に相連なり、固く着いて離すことができない。
They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.
18 これが、くしゃみすれば光を発し、その目はあけぼののまぶたに似ている。
By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
19 その口からは、たいまつが燃えいで、火花をいだす。
Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.
20 その鼻の穴からは煙が出てきて、さながら煮え立つなべの水煙のごとく、燃える葦の煙のようだ。
Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.
21 その息は炭火をおこし、その口からは炎が出る。
His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.
22 その首には力が宿っていて、恐ろしさが、その前に踊っている。
In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.
23 その肉片は密接に相連なり、固く身に着いて動かすことができない。
The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved.
24 その心臓は石のように堅く、うすの下石のように堅い。
His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.
25 その身を起すときは勇士も恐れ、その衝撃によってあわて惑う。
When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.
26 つるぎがこれを撃っても、きかない、やりも、矢も、もりも用をなさない。
The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.
27 これは鉄を見ること、わらのように、青銅を見ること朽ち木のようである。
He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.
28 弓矢もこれを逃がすことができない。石投げの石もこれには、わらくずとなる。
The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.
29 こん棒もわらくずのようにみなされ、投げやりの響きを、これはあざ笑う。
Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.
30 その下腹は鋭いかわらのかけらのようで、麦こき板のようにその身を泥の上に伸ばす。
Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.
31 これは淵をかなえのように沸きかえらせ、海を香油のなべのようにする。
He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 これは自分のあとに光る道を残し、淵をしらがのように思わせる。
He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.
33 地の上にはこれと並ぶものなく、これは恐れのない者に造られた。
Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
34 これはすべての高き者をさげすみ、すべての誇り高ぶる者の王である」。
He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.
