1 その時、テマンびとエリパズが答えて言った、

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

2 「もし人があなたにむかって意見を述べるならば、あなたは腹を立てるでしょうか。しかしだれが黙っておれましょう。

If we try to speak with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can restrain from speaking?

3 見よ、あなたは多くの人を教えさとし、衰えた手を強くした。

Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.

4 あなたの言葉はつまずく者をたすけ起し、かよわいひざを強くした。

Thy words have upheld him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

5 ところが今、この事があなたに臨むと、あなたは耐え得ない。この事があなたに触れると、あなたはおじ惑う。

But now it hath come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.

6 あなたが神を恐れていることは、あなたのよりどころではないか。あなたの道の全きことは、あなたの望みではないか。

Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?

7 考えてみよ、だれが罪のないのに、滅ぼされた者があるか。どこに正しい者で、断ち滅ぼされた者があるか。

Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

8 わたしの見た所によれば、不義を耕し、害悪をまく者は、それを刈り取っている。

Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

9 彼らは神のいぶきによって滅び、その怒りの息によって消えうせる。

By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

10 ししのほえる声、たけきししの声はともにやみ、若きししのきばは折られ、

The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

11 雄じしは獲物を得ずに滅び、雌じしの子は散らされる。

The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.

12 さて、わたしに、言葉がひそかに臨んだ、わたしの耳はそのささやきを聞いた。

Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and my ear received a whisper of it.

13 すなわち人の熟睡するころ、夜の幻によって思い乱れている時、

In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,

14 恐れがわたしに臨んだので、おののき、わたしの骨はことごとく震えた。

Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.

15 時に、霊があって、わたしの顔の前を過ぎたので、わたしの身の毛はよだった。

Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:

16 そのものは立ちどまったが、わたしはその姿を見わけることができなかった。一つのかたちが、わたしの目の前にあった。わたしは静かな声を聞いた、

It stood still, but I could not discern its form: an image was before my eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,

17 『人は神の前に正しくありえようか。人はその造り主の前に清くありえようか。

Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?

18 見よ、彼はそのしもべをさえ頼みとせず、その天使をも誤れる者とみなされる。

Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:

19 まして、泥の家に住む者、ちりをその基とする者、しみのようにつぶされる者。

How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth?

20 彼らは朝から夕までの間に打ち砕かれ、顧みる者もなく、永遠に滅びる。

They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.

21 もしその天幕の綱が彼らのうちに取り去られるなら、ついに悟ることもなく、死にうせるではないか』。

Doth not their excellency which is in them depart? they die, even without wisdom.
