1 あなたは岩間のやぎが子を産むときを知っているか。あなたは雌じかが子を産むのを見たことがあるか。

Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve?

2 これらの妊娠の月を数えることができるか。これらが産む時を知っているか。

Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?

3 これらは身をかがめて子を産み、そのはらみ子を産みいだす。

They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows.

4 その子は強くなって、野に育ち、出て行って、その親のもとに帰らない。

Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and return not unto them.

5 だれが野ろばを放って、自由にしたか。だれが野ろばのつなぎを解いたか。

Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass?

6 わたしは荒野をその家として与え、荒れ地をそのすみかとして与えた。

Whose house I have made the wilderness, and the barren land his dwellings.

7 これは町の騒ぎをいやしめ、御者の呼ぶ声を聞きいれず、

He scorneth the multitude of the city, neither regardeth he the crying of the driver.

8 山を牧場としてはせまわり、もろもろの青物を尋ね求める。

The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.

9 野牛は快くあなたに仕え、あなたの飼葉おけのかたわらにとどまるだろうか。

Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or abide by thy crib?

10 あなたは野牛に手綱をつけてうねを歩かせることができるか、これはあなたに従って谷を耕すであろうか。

Canst thou bind the unicorn with his band in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee?

11 その力が強いからとて、あなたはこれに頼むであろうか。またあなたの仕事をこれに任せるであろうか。

Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labour to him?

12 あなたはこれにたよって、あなたの穀物を打ち場に運び帰らせるであろうか。

Wilt thou believe him, that he will bring home thy seed, and gather it into thy barn?

13 だちょうは威勢よくその翼をふるう。しかしこれにはきれいな羽と羽毛があるか。

Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?

14 これはその卵を土の中に捨て置き、これを砂のなかで暖め、

Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,

15 足でつぶされることも、野の獣に踏まれることも忘れている。

And forgetteth that the foot may crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.

16 これはその子に無情であって、あたかも自分の子でないようにし、その苦労のむなしくなるをも恐れない。

She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;

17 これは神がこれに知恵を授けず、悟りを与えなかったゆえである。

Because Eloah hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he imparted to her understanding.

18 これがその身を起して走る時には、馬をも、その乗り手をもあざける。

What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.

19 あなたは馬にその力を与えることができるか。力をもってその首を装うことができるか。

Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder?

20 あなたはこれをいなごのように、とばせることができるか。その鼻あらしの威力は恐ろしい。

Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible.

21 これは谷であがき、その力に誇り、みずから出ていって武器に向かう。

He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men.

22 これは恐れをあざ笑って、驚くことなく、つるぎをさけて退くことがない。

He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.

23 矢筒はその上に鳴り、やりと投げやりと、あいきらめく。

The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield.

24 これはたけりつ、狂いつ、地をひとのみにし、ラッパの音が鳴り渡っても、立ちどまることがない。

He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet.

25 これはラッパの鳴るごとにハアハアと言い、遠くから戦いをかぎつけ、隊長の大声およびときの声を聞き知る。

He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.

26 たかが舞いあがり、その翼をのべて南に向かうのは、あなたの知恵によるのか、

Doth the hawk fly by thy wisdom, and stretch her wings toward the south?

27 わしがかけのぼり、その巣を高い所につくるのは、あなたの命令によるのか。

Doth the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest on high?

28 これは岩の上にすみかを構え、岩のとがり、または険しい所におり、

She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the crag of the rock, and the strong place.

29 そこから獲物をうかがう。その目の及ぶところは遠い。

From thence she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.

30 そのひなもまた血を吸う。おおよそ殺された者のある所には、これもそこにいる」。

Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.
