1 エリフは重ねて言った、
Elihu also proceeded, and said,
2 「しばらく待て、わたしはあなたに示すことがある。なお神のために言うべき事がある。
Bear with me a little, and I will show thee that I have yet to speak on God’s behalf.
3 わたしは遠くからわが知識を取り、わが造り主に正義を帰する。
I will bring my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.
4 まことにわたしの言葉は偽らない。知識の全き者があなたと共にいる。
For truly my words shall not be false: he that is perfect in knowledge is with thee.
5 見よ、神は力ある者であるが、何をも卑しめられない、その悟りの力は大きい。
Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.
6 彼は悪しき者を生かしておかれない、苦しむ者のためにさばきを行われる。
He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor.
7 彼は正しい者から目を離さず、位にある王たちと共に、とこしえに、彼らをすわらせて、尊くされる。
He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.
8 もし彼らが足かせにつながれ、悩みのなわに捕えられる時は、
And if they are bound in fetters, and are held in cords of affliction;
9 彼らの行いと、とがと、その高ぶったふるまいを彼らに示し、
Then he showeth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.
10 彼らの耳を開いて、教を聞かせ、悪を離れて帰ることを命じられる。
He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.
11 もし彼らが聞いて彼に仕えるならば、彼らはその日を幸福に過ごし、その年を楽しく送るであろう。
If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.
12 しかし彼らが聞かないならば、つるぎによって滅び、知識を得ないで死ぬであろう。
But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.
13 心に神を信じない者どもは怒りをたくわえ、神に縛られる時も、助けを呼び求めることをしない。
But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he bindeth them.
14 彼らは年若くして死に、その命は恥のうちに終る。
They die in youth, and their life is among the sodomites.
15 神は苦しむ者をその苦しみによって救い、彼らの耳を逆境によって開かれる。
He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression.
16 神はまたあなたを悩みから、束縛のない広い所に誘い出された。そしてあなたの食卓に置かれた物はすべて肥えた物であった。
Even so would he have removed thee out of distress into a broad place, where there is no restraint; and that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness.
17 しかしあなたは悪人のうくべきさばきをおのれに満たし、さばきと公義はあなたを捕えている。
But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee.
18 あなたは怒りに誘われて、あざけりに陥らぬように心せよ。あがないしろの大いなるがために、おのれを誤るな。
Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee.
19 あなたの叫びはあなたを守って、悩みを免れさせるであろうか、いかに力をつくしても役に立たない。
Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.
20 人々がその所から断たれるその夜を慕ってはならない。
Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place.
21 慎んで悪に傾いてはならない。あなたは悩みよりもむしろこれを選んだからだ。
Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction.
22 見よ、神はその力をもってあがめられる。だれか彼のように教える者があるか。
Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like him?
23 だれか彼のためにその道を定めた者があるか。だれか『あなたは悪い事をした』と言いうる者があるか。
Who hath directed him his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity?
24 神のみわざをほめたたえる事を忘れてはならない。これは人々の歌いあがめるところである。
Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold.
25 すべての人はこれを仰ぎ見る。人は遠くからこれを見るにすぎない。
Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off.
26 見よ、神は大いなる者にいまして、われわれは彼を知らない。その年の数も計り知ることができない。
Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.
27 彼は水のしたたりを引きあげ、その霧をしたたらせて雨とされる。
For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour of it:
28 空はこれを降らせて、人の上に豊かに注ぐ。
Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly.
29 だれか雲の広がるわけと、その幕屋のとどろくわけとを悟ることができようか。
Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?
30 見よ、彼はその光をおのれのまわりにひろげ、また海の底をおおわれる。
Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea.
31 彼はこれらをもって民をさばき、食物を豊かに賜い、
For by them he judgeth the people; he giveth food in abundance.
32 いなずまをもってもろ手を包み、これに命じて敵を打たせられる。
With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh between.
33 そのとどろきは、悪にむかって怒りに燃える彼を現す。
The noise of it showeth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.
