1 そこでテマンびとエリパズは答えて言った、
Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 「人は神を益することができるであろうか。賢い人も、ただ自身を益するのみである。
Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself?
3 あなたが正しくても、全能者になんの喜びがあろう。あなたが自分の道を全うしても、彼になんの利益があろう。
[Is it] any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or [is it] gain [to him], that thou makest thy ways perfect?
4 神はあなたが神を恐れることのゆえに、あなたを責め、あなたをさばかれるであろうか。
Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
5 あなたの悪は大きいではないか。あなたの罪は、はてしがない。
[Is] not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?
6 あなたはゆえなく兄弟のものを質にとり、裸な者の着物をはぎ取り、
For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7 疲れた者に水を飲ませず、飢えた者に食物を与えなかった。
Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry.
8 力ある人は土地を得、名ある人はそのうちに住んだ。
But [as for] the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it.
9 あなたは、やもめをむなしく去らせた。みなしごの腕は折られた。
Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.
10 それゆえ、わなはあなたをめぐり、恐怖は、にわかにあなたを驚かす。
Therefore snares [are] round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
11 あなたの光は暗くされ、あなたは見ることができない。大水はあなたをおおうであろう。
Or darkness, [that] thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.
12 神は天に高くおられるではないか。見よ、いと高き星を。いかに高いことよ。
[Is] not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!
13 それであなたは言う、『神は何を知っておられるか。彼は黒雲を通して、さばくことができるのか。
And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud?
14 濃い雲が彼をおおい隠すと、彼は見ることができない。彼は天の大空を歩まれるのだ』と。
Thick clouds [are] a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.
15 あなたは悪しき人々が踏んだいにしえの道を守ろうとするのか。
Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden?
16 彼らは時がこないうちに取り去られ、その基は川のように押し流された。
Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood:
17 彼らは神に言った、『われわれを離れてください』と、また『全能者はわれわれに何をなしえようか』と。
Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them?
18 しかし神は彼らの家を良い物で満たされた。ただし悪人の計りごとはわたしのくみする所ではない。
Yet he filled their houses with good [things: ] but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
19 正しい者はこれを見て喜び、罪なき者は彼らをあざ笑って言う、
The righteous see [it], and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn.
20 『まことにわれわれのあだは滅ぼされ、その残した物は火で焼き滅ぼされた』と。
Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth.
21 あなたは神と和らいで、平安を得るがよい。そうすれば幸福があなたに来るでしょう。
Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
22 どうか、彼の口から教を受け、その言葉をあなたの心におさめるように。
Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
23 あなたがもし全能者に立ち返って、おのれを低くし、あなたの天幕から不義を除き去り、
If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.
24 こがねをちりの中に置き、オフルのこがねを谷川の石の中に置き、
Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the [gold] of Ophir as the stones of the brooks.
25 全能者があなたのこがねとなり、あなたの貴重なしろがねとなるならば、
Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver.
26 その時、あなたは全能者を喜び、神に向かって顔をあげることができる。
For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God.
27 あなたが彼に祈るならば、彼はあなたに聞かれる。そしてあなたは自分の誓いを果す。
Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows.
28 あなたが事をなそうと定めるならば、あなたはその事を成就し、あなたの道には光が輝く。
Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.
29 彼は高ぶる者を低くされるが、へりくだる者を救われるからだ。
When [men] are cast down, then thou shalt say, [There is] lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
30 彼は罪のない者を救われる。あなたはその手の潔いことによって、救われるであろう」。
He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands.
