エレミヤ書 38

1 マッタンの子シパテヤ、パシュルの子ゲダリヤ、セレミヤの子ユカル、マルキヤの子パシュルはエレミヤがすべての民に告げていたその言葉を聞いた。

Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken to all the people, saying,

2 彼は言った、「主はこう言われる、この町にとどまる者は、つるぎや、ききんや、疫病で死ぬ。しかし出てカルデヤびとにくだる者は死を免れる。すなわちその命を自分のぶんどり物として生きることができる。

Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prize, and shall live.

3 主はこう言われる、この町は必ずバビロンの王の軍勢の手に渡される。彼はこれを取る」。

Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.

4 すると、つかさたちは王に言った、「この人を殺してください。このような言葉をのべて、この町に残っている兵士の手と、すべての民の手を弱くしているからです。この人は民の安泰を求めないで、その災を求めているのです」。

Therefore the princes said to the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the harm.

5 ゼデキヤ王は言った、「見よ、彼はあなたがたの手にある。王はあなたがたに逆らって何事をもなし得ない」。

Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.

6 そこで彼らはエレミヤを捕え、監視の庭にある王子マルキヤの穴に投げ入れた。すなわち、綱をもってエレミヤをつり降ろしたが、その穴には水がなく、泥だけであったので、エレミヤは泥の中に沈んだ。

Then they took Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.

7 王の家の宦官エチオピヤびとエベデメレクは、彼らがエレミヤを穴に投げ入れたことを聞いた。その時、王はベニヤミンの門に座していたので、

Now when Ebedmelech the Cushite, one of the eunuchs who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;

8 エベデメレクは王の家から出て行って王に言った、

Ebedmelech went out of the king’s house, and spoke to the king, saying,

9 「王なるわが君よ、この人々が預言者エレミヤにしたことはみな良いことではありません。彼を穴に投げ入れました。町に食物がなくなりましたから、彼はそこで餓死するでしょう」。

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is certain to die from hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.

10 王はエチオピヤびとエベデメレクに命じて言った、「ここから三人のひとを連れて行って、預言者エレミヤを、死なないうちに穴から引き上げなさい」。

Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Cushite, saying, Take from here thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he dieth.

11 そこでエベデメレクはその人々を連れて王の家の倉の衣服室に行き、そこから古い布切れや、着ふるした着物を取り、これを穴の中にいるエレミヤのところへ、綱をもってつり降ろした。

So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took from there old clothes and old rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

12 そしてエチオピヤびとエベデメレクは、「この布切れや着物を、あなたのわきの下にはさんで、綱に当てなさい」とエレミヤに言った。エレミヤはそのようにした。

And Ebedmelech the Cushite said to Jeremiah, Put now these old clothes and old rags under thy arms under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.

13 すると彼らは綱をもってエレミヤを穴から引き上げた。そしてエレミヤは監視の庭にとどまった。

So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

14 ゼデキヤ王は人をつかわして預言者エレミヤを主の宮の第三の門に連れてこさせ、王はエレミヤに言った、「あなたに尋ねたいことがある。何事もわたしに隠してはならない」。

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entrance that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.

15 エレミヤはゼデキヤに言った、「もしわたしがお話するなら、あなたは必ずわたしを殺されるではありませんか。たといわたしが忠告をしても、あなたはお聞きにならないでしょう」。

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I declare it to thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken to me?

16 その時ゼデキヤ王は、ひそかにエレミヤに誓って言った、「われわれの魂を造られた主は生きておられる。わたしはあなたを殺さない、またあなたの命を求める者の手に、あなたを渡すこともしない」。

So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

17 そこでエレミヤはゼデキヤに言った、「万軍の神、イスラエルの神、主はこう仰せられる、もしあなたがバビロンの王のつかさたちに降伏するならば、あなたの命は助かり、またこの町は火で焼かれることなく、あなたも、あなたの家の者も生きながらえることができる。

Then said Jeremiah to Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thy house:

18 しかし、もしあなたが出てバビロンの王のつかさたちに降伏しないならば、この町はカルデヤびとの手に渡される。彼らは火でこれを焼く。あなたはその手をのがれることができない」。

But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape from their hand.

19 ゼデキヤ王はエレミヤに言った、「わたしはカルデヤびとに脱走したユダヤ人を恐れている。カルデヤびとはわたしを彼らの手に渡し、彼らはわたしをはずかしめる」。

And Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that have fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

20 エレミヤは言った、「彼らはあなたを渡さないでしょう。どうか、わたしがあなたに告げた主の声に聞き従ってください。そうすれば幸を得、また命が助かります。

But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak to thee: so it shall be well to thee, and thy soul shall live.

21 しかし降伏することを拒むならば、主がわたしに示された幻を申しましょう。

But if thou shalt refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD hath shown me:

22 すなわち、ユダの王の家に残っている女たちは、みなバビロンの王のつかさたちの所へ引いて行かれます。その女たちは言うのです、『あなたの親しい友だちがあなたを欺いた、そしてあなたに勝った。今あなたの足は泥に沈んでいるので、彼らはあなたを捨てて去る』。

And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.

23 あなたの妻たちと子供たちは皆カルデヤびとの所へひき出される。あなた自身もその手をのがれることができず、バビロンの王に捕えられる。そしてこの町は火で焼かれるでしょう」。

So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.

24 ゼデキヤはエレミヤに言った、「これらの言葉を人に知らせてはならない。そうすればあなたは殺されることはない。

Then said Zedekiah to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.

25 わたしがあなたと話をしたことを、つかさたちが聞いて、彼らがあなたの所に来て、『あなたが王に話したこと、王があなたに話したことをわれわれに告げなさい。何事も隠してはならない。われわれはあなたを殺しはしない』と言うならば、

But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come to thee, and say to thee, Declare to us now what thou hast said to the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said to thee:

26 あなたは彼らに、『わたしは王に願って、わたしをヨナタンの家に送り返さず、そこで死ぬことのないようにしてくださいと言った』と答えなさい」。

Then thou shalt say to them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.

27 さて、つかさたちは皆エレミヤのところへ来て尋ねたが、王が彼に教えたように彼らに答えたので、彼らは彼と話すことをやめた。その会話を聞いた者がなかったからである。

Then came all the princes to Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they stopped speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

28 エレミヤはエルサレムの取られる日まで監視の庭にとどまっていた。

So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.
