イザヤ書 36
1 ヒゼキヤ王の第十四年に、アッスリヤの王セナケリブが上ってきて、ユダのすべての堅固な町々を攻め取った。
Now it happened in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them.
2 アッスリヤの王はラキシからラブシャケをエルサレムにつかわし、大軍を率いてヒゼキヤ王のもとへ行かせた。ラブシャケは布さらしの野へ行く大路に沿う、上の池の水道のかたわらに立った。
The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool on the highway to the Launderers' Field.
3 この時ヒルキヤの子である宮内卿エリアキム、書記官セブナおよびアサフの子である史官ヨアが彼の所に出てきた。
Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder came out to him.
4 ラブシャケは彼らに言った、「ヒゼキヤに言いなさい、『大王アッスリヤの王はこう仰せられる、あなたが頼みとする者は何か。
Rabshakeh said to them, "Now tell Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, "What confidence is this in which you trust?
5 口先だけの言葉が戦争をする計略と力だと考えるのか。あなたは今だれを頼んで、わたしにそむいたのか。
Do you think that empty words are strategy and power for war? Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?
6 見よ、あなたはかの折れかけている葦のつえエジプトを頼みとしているが、それは人が寄りかかるとき、その人の手を刺し通す。エジプトの王パロはすべて寄り頼む者にそのようにするのだ。
Look, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
7 しかし、あなたがもし「われわれはわれわれの神、主を頼む」とわたしに言うならば、ヒゼキヤがユダとエルサレムに告げて、「あなたがたはこの祭壇の前で礼拝しなければならない」と言って除いたのは、その神の高き所と祭壇ではなかったのか。
But if you tell me, 'We trust in the LORD our God,' isn't that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar?'"
8 さあ、今わたしの主君アッスリヤの王とかけをせよ。もしあなたの方に乗る人があるならば、わたしは馬二千頭を与えよう。
Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
9 あなたはエジプトを頼み、戦車と騎兵を請い求めているが、わたしの主君の家来のうちの最も小さい一隊長でさえ、どうして撃退することができようか。
How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10 わたしがこの国を滅ぼすために上ってきたのは、主の許しなしでしたことであろうか。主はわたしに、この国へ攻め上って、これを滅ぼせと言われたのだ』」。
Have I come up now without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, "Go up against this land, and destroy it."'"
11 その時、エリアキム、セブナおよびヨアはラブシャケに言った、「どうぞ、アラム語でしもべたちに話してください。わたしたちはそれがわかるからです。城壁の上にいる民の聞いているところで、わたしたちにユダヤの言葉で話さないでください」。
Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall."
12 しかしラブシャケは言った、「わたしの主君は、あなたの主君とあなたにだけでなく、城壁の上に座している人々にも、この言葉を告げるために、わたしをつかわされたのではないか。彼らをも、あなたがたと共に自分の糞尿を食い飲みするに至らせるためではないか」。
But Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?"
13 そしてラブシャケは立ちあがり、ユダヤの言葉で大声に呼ばわって言った、「大王、アッスリヤの王の言葉を聞け。
Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
14 王はこう仰せられる、『あなたがたはヒゼキヤに欺かれてはならない。彼はあなたがたを救い出すことはできない。
Thus says the king, 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.
15 ヒゼキヤが、主は必ずわれわれを救い出される。この町はアッスリヤの王の手に陥ることはない、と言っても、あなたがたは主を頼みとしてはならない』。
Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, "The LORD will surely deliver us. This city won't be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."'
16 あなたがたはヒゼキヤの言葉を聞いてはならない。アッスリヤの王はこう仰せられる、『あなたがたは、わたしと和ぼくして、わたしに降服せよ。そうすれば、あなたがたはめいめい自分のぶどうの実を食べ、めいめい自分のいちじくの実を食べ、めいめい自分の井戸の水を飲むことができる。
Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, 'Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
17 やがて、わたしが来て、あなたがたを一つの国へ連れて行く。それは、あなたがたの国のように穀物とぶどう酒の多い地、パンとぶどう畑の多い地だ。
until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18 ヒゼキヤが、主はわれわれを救われる、と言って、あなたがたを惑わすことのないように気をつけよ。もろもろの国の神々のうち、どの神がその国をアッスリヤの王の手から救ったか。
Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, "The LORD will deliver us." Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?
19 ハマテやアルパデの神々はどこにいるか。セパルワイムの神々はどこにいるか。彼らはサマリヤをわたしの手から救い出したか。
Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Iwah? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
20 これらの国々のすべての神々のうちに、だれかその国をわたしの手から救い出した者があるか。主がどうしてエルサレムをわたしの手から救い出すことができよう』」。
Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'"
21 しかし民は黙ってひと言も答えなかった。王が命じて、「彼に答えてはならない」と言っておいたからである。
But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king's commandment was, "Do not answer him."
22 その時ヒルキヤの子である宮内卿エリアキム、書記官セブナおよびアサフの子である史官ヨアは衣を裂き、ヒゼキヤのもとに来て、ラブシャケの言葉を彼に告げた。
Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
