創世記 44
1 さてヨセフは家づかさに命じて言った、「この人々の袋に、運べるだけ多くの食糧を満たし、めいめいの銀を袋の口に入れておきなさい。
He enjoined the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in his sack’s mouth.
2 またわたしの杯、銀の杯をあの年下の者の袋の口に、穀物の代金と共に入れておきなさい」。家づかさはヨセフの言葉のとおりにした。
Put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack’s mouth of the youngest, with his grain money.” He did according to the word that Joseph [May he add] had spoken.
3 夜が明けると、その人々と、ろばとは送り出されたが、
As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.
4 町を出て、まだ遠くへ行かないうちに、ヨセフは家づかさに言った、「立って、あの人々のあとを追いなさい。追いついて、彼らに言いなさい、『あなたがたはなぜ悪をもって善に報いるのですか。なぜわたしの銀の杯を盗んだのですか。
When they had gone out of the city, and was not yet far off, Joseph [May he add] said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men. When you overtake them, ask them, ‘Why have you rewarded evil for good?
5 これはわたしの主人が飲む時に使い、またいつも占いに用いるものではありませんか。あなたがたのした事は悪いことです』」。
Is not this that from which my lord drinks, and by which he indeed divines? You have done evil in so doing.’”
6 家づかさが彼らに追いついて、これらの言葉を彼らに告げたとき、
He overtook them, and he spoke these words to them.
7 彼らは言った、「わが主は、どうしてそのようなことを言われるのですか。しもべらは決してそのようなことはいたしません。
They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing!
8 袋の口で見つけた銀でさえ、カナンの地からあなたの所に持ち帰ったほどです。どうして、われわれは御主人の家から銀や金を盗みましょう。
Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought again to you out of the land of Canaan [Humbled]. How then should we steal silver or gold out of your lord’s house?
9 しもべらのうちのだれの所でそれが見つかっても、その者は死に、またわれわれはわが主の奴隷となりましょう」。
With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my lord’s slaves.”
10 家づかさは言った、「それではあなたがたの言葉のようにしよう。杯の見つかった者はわたしの奴隷とならなければならない。ほかの者は無罪です」。
He said, “Now also let it be according to your words: he with whom it is found will be my slave; and you will be blameless.”
11 そこで彼らは、めいめい急いで袋を地におろし、ひとりひとりその袋を開いた。
Then they hurried, and each man took his sack down to the ground, and each man opened his sack.
12 家づかさは年上から捜し始めて年下に終ったが、杯はベニヤミンの袋の中にあった。
He searched, beginning with the oldest, and ending at the youngest. The cup was found in Benjamin [Son of right hand, Son of south]’s sack.
13 そこで彼らは衣服を裂き、おのおの、ろばに荷を負わせて町に引き返した。
Then they tore their clothes, and each man loaded his donkey, and returned to the city.
14 ユダと兄弟たちとは、ヨセフの家にはいったが、ヨセフがなおそこにいたので、彼らはその前で地にひれ伏した。
Judah [Praised] and his brothers came to Joseph [May he add]’s house, and he was still there. They fell on the ground before him.
15 ヨセフは彼らに言った、「あなたがたのこのしわざは何事ですか。わたしのような人は、必ず占い当てることを知らないのですか」。
Joseph [May he add] said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Don’t you know that such a man as I can indeed divine?”
16 ユダは言った、「われわれはわが主に何を言い、何を述べ得ましょう。どうしてわれわれは身の潔白をあらわし得ましょう。神がしもべらの罪をあばかれました。われわれと、杯を持っていた者とは共にわが主の奴隷となりましょう」。
Judah [Praised] said, “What will we tell my lord? What will we speak? Or how will we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants. Behold, we are my lord’s slaves, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found.”
17 ヨセフは言った、「わたしは決してそのようなことはしない。杯を持っている者だけがわたしの奴隷とならなければならない。ほかの者は安全に父のもとへ上って行きなさい」。
He said, “Far be it from me that I should do so. The man in whose hand the cup is found, he will be my slave; but as for you, go up in peace to your father.”
18 この時ユダは彼に近づいて言った、「ああ、わが主よ、どうぞわが主の耳にひとこと言わせてください。しもべをおこらないでください。あなたはパロのようなかたです。
Then Judah [Praised] came near to him, and said, “Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears, and don’t let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Pharaoh.
19 わが主はしもべらに尋ねて、『父があるか、また弟があるか』と言われたので、
My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’
20 われわれはわが主に言いました、『われわれには老齢の父があり、また年寄り子の弟があります。その兄は死んで、同じ母の子で残っているのは、ただこれだけですから父はこれを愛しています』。
We said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and his father 'ahav ·affectionately loves· him.’
21 その時あなたはしもべらに言われました、『その者をわたしの所へ連れてきなさい。わたしはこの目で彼を見よう』。
You said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’
22 われわれはわが主に言いました。『その子供は父を離れることができません。もし父を離れたら父は死ぬでしょう』。
We said to my lord, ‘The boy can’t leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’
23 しかし、あなたはしもべらに言われました、『末の弟が一緒に下ってこなければ、おまえたちは再びわたしの顔を見ることはできない』。
You said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will see my face no more.’
24 それであなたのしもべである父のもとに上って、わが主の言葉を彼に告げました。
When we came up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.
25 ところで、父が『おまえたちは再び行って、われわれのために少しの食糧を買ってくるように』と言ったので、
Our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food.’
26 われわれは言いました、『われわれは下って行けません。もし末の弟が一緒であれば行きましょう。末の弟が一緒でなければ、あの人の顔を見ることができません』。
We said, ‘We can’t go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down: for we may not see the man’s face, unless our youngest brother is with us.’
27 あなたのしもべである父は言いました、『おまえたちの知っているとおり、妻はわたしにふたりの子を産んだ。
Your servant, my father, said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons:
28 ひとりは外へ出たが、きっと裂き殺されたのだと思う。わたしは今になっても彼を見ない。
and the one went out from me, and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces;” and I haven’t seen him since.
If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol ·Place of the dead·.’ (Sheol h7585)
30 わたしがあなたのしもべである父のもとに帰って行くとき、もしこの子供が一緒にいなかったら、どうなるでしょう。父の魂は子供の魂に結ばれているのです。
Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us; since his life is bound up in the boy’s life;
it will happen, when he sees that the boy is no more, that he will die. Your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant, our father, with sorrow to Sheol ·Place of the dead·. (Sheol h7585)
32 しもべは父にこの子供の身を請け合って『もしわたしがこの子をあなたのもとに連れ帰らなかったら、わたしは父に対して永久に罪を負いましょう』と言ったのです。
For your servant became collateral for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I don’t bring him to you, then I will bear the blame to my father forever.’
33 どうか、しもべをこの子供の代りに、わが主の奴隷としてとどまらせ、この子供を兄弟たちと一緒に上り行かせてください、
Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, my lord’s slave; and let the boy go up with his brothers.
34 この子供を連れずに、どうしてわたしは父のもとに上り行くことができましょう。父が災に会うのを見るに忍びません」。
For how will I go up to my father, if the boy is not with me?— lest I see the evil that will come on my father.”
