創世記 26

1 アブラハムの時にあった初めのききんのほか、またききんがその国にあったので、イサクはゲラルにいるペリシテびとの王アビメレクの所へ行った。

And there was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines to Gerar.

2 その時、主は彼に現れて言われた、「エジプトへ下ってはならない。わたしがあなたに示す地にとどまりなさい。

And the LORD appeared to him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:

3 あなたがこの地にとどまるなら、わたしはあなたと共にいて、あなたを祝福し、これらの国をことごとくあなたと、あなたの子孫とに与え、わたしがあなたの父アブラハムに誓った誓いを果そう。

Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for to thee, and to thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham thy father;

4 またわたしはあなたの子孫を増して天の星のようにし、あなたの子孫にこれらの地をみな与えよう。そして地のすべての国民はあなたの子孫によって祝福をえるであろう。

And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give to thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;

5 アブラハムがわたしの言葉にしたがってわたしのさとしと、いましめと、さだめと、おきてとを守ったからである」。

Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

6 こうしてイサクはゲラルに住んだ。

And Isaac dwelt in Gerar:

7 その所の人々が彼の妻のことを尋ねたとき、「彼女はわたしの妹です」と彼は言った。リベカは美しかったので、その所の人々がリベカのゆえに自分を殺すかもしれないと思って、「わたしの妻です」と言うのを恐れたからである。

And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.

8 イサクは長らくそこにいたが、ある日ペリシテびとの王アビメレクは窓から外をながめていて、イサクがその妻リベカと戯れているのを見た。

And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

9 そこでアビメレクはイサクを召して言った、「彼女は確かにあなたの妻です。あなたはどうして『彼女はわたしの妹です』と言われたのですか」。イサクは彼に言った、「わたしは彼女のゆえに殺されるかもしれないと思ったからです」。

And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, surely she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said to him, Because I said, Lest I should die on her account.

10 アビメレクは言った、「あなたはどうしてこんな事をわれわれにされたのですか。民のひとりが軽々しくあなたの妻と寝るような事があれば、その時あなたはわれわれに罪を負わせるでしょう」。

And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done to us? one of the people might lightly have lain with thy wife, and thou wouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.

11 それでアビメレクはすべての民に命じて言った、「この人、またはその妻にさわる者は必ず死ななければならない」。

And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

12 イサクはその地に種をまいて、その年に百倍の収穫を得た。このように主が彼を祝福されたので、

Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him.

13 彼は富み、またますます栄えて非常に裕福になり、

And the man became great, and continued, and grew until he became very great:

14 羊の群れ、牛の群れ及び多くのしもべを持つようになったので、ペリシテびとは彼をねたんだ。

For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and very many servants: and the Philistines envied him.

15 またペリシテびとは彼の父アブラハムの時に、父のしもべたちが掘ったすべての井戸をふさぎ、土で埋めた。

For all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth.

16 アビメレクはイサクに言った、「あなたはわれわれよりも、はるかに強くなられたから、われわれの所を去ってください」。

And Abimelech said to Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.

17 イサクはそこを去り、ゲラルの谷に天幕を張ってその所に住んだ。

And Isaac departed from there, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.

18 そしてイサクは父アブラハムの時に人々の掘った水の井戸を再び掘った。アブラハムの死後、ペリシテびとがふさいだからである。イサクは父がつけた名にしたがってそれらに名をつけた。

And Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

19 しかしイサクのしもべたちが谷の中を掘って、そこにわき出る水の井戸を見つけたとき、

And Isaac’s servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

20 ゲラルの羊飼たちは、「この水はわれわれのものだ」と言って、イサクの羊飼たちと争ったので、イサクはその井戸の名をエセクと名づけた。彼らが彼と争ったからである。

And the herdmen of Gerar contended with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.

21 彼らはまた一つの井戸を掘ったが、これをも争ったので、名をシテナと名づけた。

And they dug another well, and contended for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.

22 イサクはそこから移ってまた一つの井戸を掘ったが、彼らはこれを争わなかったので、その名をレホボテと名づけて言った、「いま主がわれわれの場所を広げられたから、われわれはこの地にふえるであろう」。

And he departed from there, and dug another well; and for that they did not contend: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

23 彼はそこからベエルシバに上った。

And he went up from there to Beersheba.

24 その夜、主は彼に現れて言われた、「わたしはあなたの父アブラハムの神である。あなたは恐れてはならない。わたしはあなたと共におって、あなたを祝福し、わたしのしもべアブラハムのゆえにあなたの子孫を増すであろう」。

And the LORD appeared to him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.

25 それで彼はその所に祭壇を築いて、主の名を呼び、そこに天幕を張った。またイサクのしもべたちはそこに一つの井戸を掘った。

And he built an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants dug a well.

26 時にアビメレクがその友アホザテと、軍勢の長ピコルと共にゲラルからイサクのもとにきたので、

Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.

27 イサクは彼らに言った、「あなたがたはわたしを憎んで、あなたがたの中からわたしを追い出されたのに、どうしてわたしの所にこられたのですか」。

And Isaac said to them, Why come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you?

28 彼らは言った、「われわれは主があなたと共におられるのを、はっきり見ましたので、いまわれわれの間、すなわちわれわれとあなたとの間に一つの誓いを立てて、あなたと契約を結ぼうと思います。

And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath between us, even between us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;

29 われわれはあなたに害を加えたことはなく、ただ良い事だけをして、安らかに去らせたのですから、あなたはわれわれに悪い事をしてはなりません。まことにあなたは主に祝福されたかたです」。

That thou wilt do us no harm, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done to thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.

30 そこでイサクは彼らのためにふるまいを設けた。彼らは飲み食いし、

And he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

31 あくる朝、はやく起きて互に誓った。こうしてイサクは彼らを去らせたので、彼らはイサクのもとから穏やかに去った。

And they rose early in the morning, and swore one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

32 その日、イサクのしもべたちがきて、自分たちが掘った井戸について彼に告げて言った、「わたしたちは水を見つけました」。

And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, We have found water.

33 イサクはそれをシバと名づけた。これによってその町の名は今日にいたるまでベエルシバといわれている。

And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

34 エサウは四十歳の時、ヘテびとベエリの娘ユデテとヘテびとエロンの娘バスマテとを妻にめとった。

And Esau was forty years old when he took for a wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite:

35 彼女たちはイサクとリベカにとって心の痛みとなった。

Who were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.
