創世記 16
1 アブラムの妻サライは子を産まなかった。彼女にひとりのつかえめがあった。エジプトの女で名をハガルといった。
Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no sons. And she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2 サライはアブラムに言った、「主はわたしに子をお授けになりません。どうぞ、わたしのつかえめの所におはいりください。彼女によってわたしは子をもつことになるでしょう」。アブラムはサライの言葉を聞きいれた。
And Sarai said to Abram, Behold now, Jehovah has restrained me from bearing. Go in, I pray thee, to my handmaid. It may be that I will obtain sons by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3 アブラムの妻サライはそのつかえめエジプトの女ハガルをとって、夫アブラムに妻として与えた。これはアブラムがカナンの地に十年住んだ後であった。
And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.
4 彼はハガルの所にはいり、ハガルは子をはらんだ。彼女は自分のはらんだのを見て、女主人を見下げるようになった。
And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5 そこでサライはアブラムに言った、「わたしが受けた害はあなたの責任です。わたしのつかえめをあなたのふところに与えたのに、彼女は自分のはらんだのを見て、わたしを見下さげます。どうか、主があなたとわたしの間をおさばきになるように」。
And Sarai said to Abram, My wrong be upon thee. I gave my handmaid into they bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Jehovah judge between me and thee.
6 アブラムはサライに言った、「あなたのつかえめはあなたの手のうちにある。あなたの好きなように彼女にしなさい」。そしてサライが彼女を苦しめたので、彼女はサライの顔を避けて逃げた。
But Abram said to Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand, do to her that which is good in thine eyes. And Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
7 主の使は荒野にある泉のほとり、すなわちシュルの道にある泉のほとりで、彼女に会い、
And the agent of Jehovah found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8 そして言った、「サライのつかえめハガルよ、あなたはどこからきたのですか、またどこへ行くのですか」。彼女は言った、「わたしは女主人サライの顔を避けて逃げているのです」。
And he said, Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, from where have thou come? And where are thou going? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9 主の使は彼女に言った、「あなたは女主人のもとに帰って、その手に身を任せなさい」。
And the agent of Jehovah said to her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.
10 主の使はまた彼女に言った、「わたしは大いにあなたの子孫を増して、数えきれないほどに多くしましょう」。
And the agent of Jehovah said to her, I will greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11 主の使はまた彼女に言った、「あなたは、みごもっています。あなたは男の子を産むでしょう。名をイシマエルと名づけなさい。主があなたの苦しみを聞かれたのです。
And the agent of Jehovah said to her, Behold, thou are with child, and shall bear a son, and thou shall call his name Ishmael, because Jehovah has heard thy affliction.
12 彼は野ろばのような人となり、その手はすべての人に逆らい、すべての人の手は彼に逆らい、彼はすべての兄弟に敵して住むでしょう」。
And he will be a wild donkey among men, his hand against every man, and every man's hand against him, and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brothers.
13 そこで、ハガルは自分に語られた主の名を呼んで、「あなたはエル・ロイです」と言った。彼女が「ここでも、わたしを見ていられるかたのうしろを拝めたのか」と言ったことによる。
And she called the name of Jehovah who spoke to her, Thou are a God who sees, for she said, Have I even here looked behind him who sees me?
14 それでその井戸は「ベエル・ラハイ・ロイ」と呼ばれた。これはカデシとベレデの間にある。
Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 ハガルはアブラムに男の子を産んだ。アブラムはハガルが産んだ子の名をイシマエルと名づけた。
And Hagar bore Abram a son. And Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16 ハガルがイシマエルをアブラムに産んだ時、アブラムは八十六歳であった。
And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
