エステル 記 6
1 その夜、王は眠ることができなかったので、命じて日々の事をしるした記録の書を持ってこさせ、王の前で読ませたが、
On that night the king could not sleep. And he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles, and they were read before the king.
2 その中に、モルデカイがかつて王の侍従で、王のへやの戸を守る者のうちのビグタナとテレシのふたりが、アハシュエロス王を殺そうとねらっていることを告げた、としるされているのを見いだした。
And it was found written, that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's chamberlains, of those who kept the threshold, who had sought to lay hands on king Ahasuerus.
3 そこで王は言った、「この事のために、どんな栄誉と爵位をモルデカイに与えたか」。王に仕える侍臣たちは言った、「何も彼に与えていません」。
And the king said, What honor and dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this? Then the king's servants who ministered to him said, There is nothing done for him.
4 王は言った、「庭にいるのはだれか」。この時ハマンはモルデカイのために設けた木にモルデカイを掛けることを王に申し上げようと王宮の外庭にはいってきていた。
And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Haman came into the outward court of the king's house to speak to the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.
5 王の侍臣たちが「ハマンが庭に立っています」と王に言ったので、王は「ここへ、はいらせよ」と言った。
And the king's servants said to him, Behold, Haman stands in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.
6 やがてハマンがはいって来ると王は言った、「王が栄誉を与えようと思う人にはどうしたらよかろうか」。ハマンは心のうちに言った、「王はわたし以外にだれに栄誉を与えようと思われるだろうか」。
So Haman came in. And the king said to him, What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor? Now Haman said in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honor more than to myself?
7 ハマンは王に言った、「王が栄誉を与えようと思われる人のためには、
And Haman said to the king, For the man whom the king delights to honor,
8 王の着られた衣服を持ってこさせ、また王の乗られた馬、すなわちその頭に王冠をいただいた馬をひいてこさせ、
let royal apparel be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides upon, and on the head of which a royal crown is set.
9 その衣服と馬とを王の最も尊い大臣のひとりの手にわたして、王が栄誉を与えようと思われる人にその衣服を着させ、またその人を馬に乗せ、町の広場を導いて通らせ、『王が栄誉を与えようと思う人にはこうするのだ』とその前に呼ばわらせなさい」。
And let the apparel and the horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble rulers, that they may array the man therewith whom the king delights to honor, and cause him to ride on horseback through the street of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.
10 それで王はハマンに言った、「急いであなたが言ったように、その衣服と馬とを取り寄せ、王の門に座しているユダヤ人モルデカイにそうしなさい。あなたが言ったことを一つも欠いてはならない」。
Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel and the horse, as thou have said, and do even so to Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king's gate. Let nothing fail of all that thou have spoken.
11 そこでハマンは衣服と馬とを取り寄せ、モルデカイにその衣服を着せ、彼を馬に乗せて町の広場を通らせ、その前に呼ばわって、「王が栄誉を与えようと思う人にはこうするのだ」と言った。
Then Haman took the apparel and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and caused him to ride through the street of the city, and proclaimed before him, Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.
12 こうしてモルデカイは王の門に帰ってきたが、ハマンは憂え悩み、頭をおおって急いで家に帰った。
And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hastened to his house, mourning and having his head covered.
13 そしてハマンは自分の身に起った事をことごとくその妻ゼレシと友だちに告げた。するとその知者たちおよび妻ゼレシは彼に言った、「あのモルデカイ、すなわちあなたがその人の前に敗れ始めた者が、もしユダヤ人の子孫であるならば、あなたは彼に勝つことはできない。必ず彼の前に敗れるでしょう」。
And Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had befallen him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, If Mordecai, before whom thou have begun to fall, be of the seed of the Jews, thou shall not prevail against him, but shall surely fall before him.
14 彼らがなおハマンと話している時、王の侍従たちがきてハマンを促し、エステルが設けた酒宴に臨ませた。
While they were yet talking with him, the king's chamberlains came, and hastened to bring Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
