エステル 記 4

1 モルデカイはすべてこのなされたことを知ったとき、その衣を裂き、荒布をまとい、灰をかぶり、町の中へ行って大声をあげ、激しく叫んで、

And when Mordecai knew all that was done, Mordecai rent his garments, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and bitter cry,

2 王の門の入口まで行った。荒布をまとっては王の門の内にはいることができないからである。

and came even before the king's gate; for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.

3 すべて王の命令と詔をうけ取った各州ではユダヤ人のうちに大いなる悲しみがあり、断食、嘆き、叫びが起り、また荒布をまとい、灰の上に座する者が多かった。

And in every province, wherever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing: many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

4 エステルの侍女たちおよび侍従たちがきて、この事を告げたので、王妃は非常に悲しみ、モルデカイに着物を贈り、それを着せて、荒布を脱がせようとしたが受けなかった。

And Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told [it] her; and the queen was exceedingly grieved: and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him; but he received [it] not.

5 そこでエステルは王の侍従のひとりで、王が自分にはべらせたハタクを召し、モルデカイのもとへ行って、それは何事であるか、何ゆえであるかを尋ねて来るようにと命じた。

Then Esther called for Hatach, [one] of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to wait upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.

6 ハタクは出て、王の門の前にある町の広場にいるモルデカイのもとへ行くと、

And Hatach went forth to Mordecai, unto the public place of the city which was before the king's gate.

7 モルデカイは自分の身に起ったすべての事を彼に告げ、かつハマンがユダヤ人を滅ぼすことのために王の金庫に量り入れると約束した銀の正確な額を告げた。

And Mordecai told him of all that had happened to him, and of the sum of money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

8 また彼らを滅ぼさせるために、スサで発布された詔書の写しを彼にわたし、それをエステルに見せ、かつ説きあかし、彼女が王のもとへ行ってその民のために王のあわれみを請い、王の前に願い求めるように彼女に言い伝えよと言った。

And he gave him a copy of the writing of the decree that had been given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew [it] to Esther, and to declare [it] to her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication to him, and to make request before him, for her people.

9 ハタクが帰ってきてモルデカイの言葉をエステルに告げたので、

And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

10 エステルはハタクに命じ、モルデカイに言葉を伝えさせて言った、

And Esther spoke to Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai:

11 「王の侍臣および王の諸州の民は皆、男でも女でも、すべて召されないのに内庭にはいって王のもとへ行く者は、必ず殺されなければならないという一つの法律のあることを知っています。ただし王がその者に金の笏を伸べれば生きることができるのです。しかしわたしはこの三十日の間、王のもとへ行くべき召をこうむらないのです」。

All the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces do know that whoever, whether man or woman, shall come to the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law, to put [him] to death, except [such] to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live; and I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

12 エステルの言葉をモルデカイに告げたので、

And they told Mordecai Esther's words.

13 モルデカイは命じてエステルに答えさせて言った、「あなたは王宮にいるゆえ、すべてのユダヤ人と異なり、難を免れるだろうと思ってはならない。

And Mordecai bade to answer Esther: Imagine not in thy heart that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.

14 あなたがもし、このような時に黙っているならば、ほかの所から、助けと救がユダヤ人のために起るでしょう。しかし、あなたとあなたの父の家とは滅びるでしょう。あなたがこの国に迎えられたのは、このような時のためでなかったとだれが知りましょう」。

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there arise relief and deliverance to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall perish. And who knows whether thou art [not] come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

15 そこでエステルは命じてモルデカイに答えさせた、

And Esther bade to answer Mordecai:

16 「あなたは行ってスサにいるすべてのユダヤ人を集め、わたしのために断食してください。三日のあいだ夜も昼も食い飲みしてはなりません。わたしとわたしの侍女たちも同様に断食しましょう。そしてわたしは法律にそむくことですが王のもとへ行きます。わたしがもし死なねばならないのなら、死にます」。

Go, gather together all the Jews that are found in Shushan, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise, and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.

17 モルデカイは行って、エステルがすべて自分に命じたとおりに行った。

And Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
