伝道者の書 6
1 わたしは日の下に一つの悪のあるのを見た。これは人々の上に重い。
There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
2 すなわち神は富と、財産と、誉とを人に与えて、その心に慕うものを、一つも欠けることのないようにされる。しかし神は、その人にこれを持つことを許されないで、他人がこれを持つようになる。これは空である。悪しき病である。
A man to whom Elohim hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet Elohim giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
3 たとい人は百人の子をもうけ、また命長く、そのよわいの日が多くても、その心が幸福に満足せず、また葬られることがなければ、わたしは言う、流産の子はその人にまさると。
If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
4 これはむなしく来て、暗やみの中に去って行き、その名は暗やみにおおわれる。
For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
5 またこれは日を見ず、物を知らない。けれどもこれは彼よりも安らかである。
Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
6 たとい彼は千年に倍するほど生きても幸福を見ない。みな一つ所に行くのではないか。
Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
7 人の労苦は皆、その口のためである。しかしその食欲は満たされない。
All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
8 賢い者は愚かな者になんのまさるところがあるか。また生ける者の前に歩むことを知る貧しい者もなんのまさるところがあるか。
For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
9 目に見る事は欲望のさまよい歩くにまさる。これもまた空であって、風を捕えるようなものである。
Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
10 今あるものは、すでにその名がつけられた。そして人はいかなる者であるかは知られた。それで人は自分よりも力強い者と争うことはできない。
That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
11 言葉が多ければむなしい事も多い。人になんの益があるか。
Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
12 人はその短く、むなしい命の日を影のように送るのに、何が人のために善であるかを知ることができよう。だれがその身の後に、日の下に何があるであろうかを人に告げることができるか。
For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
