伝道者の書 4
1 わたしはまた、日の下に行われるすべてのしえたげを見た。見よ、しえたげられる者の涙を。彼らを慰める者はない。しえたげる者の手には権力がある。しかし彼らを慰める者はいない。
So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.
2 それで、わたしはなお生きている生存者よりも、すでに死んだ死者を、さいわいな者と思った。
Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.
3 しかし、この両者よりもさいわいなのは、まだ生れない者で、日の下に行われる悪しきわざを見ない者である。
Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
4 また、わたしはすべての労苦と、すべての巧みなわざを見たが、これは人が互にねたみあってなすものである。これもまた空であって、風を捕えるようである。
Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
5 愚かなる者は手をつかねて、自分の肉を食う。
The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
6 片手に物を満たして平穏であるのは、両手に物を満たして労苦し、風を捕えるのにまさる。
Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.
7 わたしはまた、日の下に空なる事のあるのを見た。
Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
8 ここに人がある。ひとりであって、仲間もなく、子もなく、兄弟もない。それでも彼の労苦は窮まりなく、その目は富に飽くことがない。また彼は言わない、「わたしはだれのために労するのか、どうして自分を楽しませないのか」と。これもまた空であって、苦しいわざである。
There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.
9 ふたりはひとりにまさる。彼らはその労苦によって良い報いを得るからである。
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.
10 すなわち彼らが倒れる時には、そのひとりがその友を助け起す。しかしひとりであって、その倒れる時、これを助け起す者のない者はわざわいである。
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
11 またふたりが一緒に寝れば暖かである。ひとりだけで、どうして暖かになり得ようか。
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
12 人がもし、そのひとりを攻め撃ったなら、ふたりで、それに当るであろう。三つよりの綱はたやすくは切れない。
And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
13 貧しくて賢いわらべは、老いて愚かで、もはや、いさめをいれることを知らない王にまさる。
Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.
14 たとい、その王が獄屋から出て、王位についた者であっても、また自分の国に貧しく生れて王位についた者であっても、そうである。
For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.
15 わたしは日の下に歩むすべての民が、かのわらべのように王に代って立つのを見た。
I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.
16 すべての民は果てしがない。彼はそのすべての民を導いた。しかし後に来る者は彼を喜ばない。たしかに、これもまた空であって、風を捕えるようである。
There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
