伝道者の書 3

1 天が下のすべての事には季節があり、すべてのわざには時がある。

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

2 生るるに時があり、死ぬるに時があり、植えるに時があり、植えたものを抜くに時があり、

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

3 殺すに時があり、いやすに時があり、こわすに時があり、建てるに時があり、

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

4 泣くに時があり、笑うに時があり、悲しむに時があり、踊るに時があり、

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5 石を投げるに時があり、石を集めるに時があり、抱くに時があり、抱くことをやめるに時があり、

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

6 捜すに時があり、失うに時があり、保つに時があり、捨てるに時があり、

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7 裂くに時があり、縫うに時があり、黙るに時があり、語るに時があり、

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8 愛するに時があり、憎むに時があり、戦うに時があり、和らぐに時がある。

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

9 働く者はその労することにより、なんの益を得るか。

What profit hath he that worketh in that in which he laboureth?

10 わたしは神が人の子らに与えて、ほねおらせられる仕事を見た。

I have seen the labour, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.

11 神のなされることは皆その時にかなって美しい。神はまた人の心に永遠を思う思いを授けられた。それでもなお、人は神のなされるわざを初めから終りまで見きわめることはできない。

He hath made every thing beautiful in its time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

12 わたしは知っている。人にはその生きながらえている間、楽しく愉快に過ごすよりほかに良い事はない。

I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.

13 またすべての人が食い飲みし、そのすべての労苦によって楽しみを得ることは神の賜物である。

And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.

14 わたしは知っている。すべて神がなさる事は永遠に変ることがなく、これに加えることも、これから取ることもできない。神がこのようにされるのは、人々が神の前に恐れをもつようになるためである。

I know that, whatever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be added to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.

15 今あるものは、すでにあったものである。後にあるものも、すでにあったものである。神は追いやられたものを尋ね求められる。

That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.

16 わたしはまた、日の下を見たが、さばきを行う所にも不正があり、公義を行う所にも不正がある。

And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.

17 わたしは心に言った、「神は正しい者と悪い者とをさばかれる。神はすべての事と、すべてのわざに、時を定められたからである」と。

I said in my heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

18 わたしはまた、人の子らについて心に言った、「神は彼らをためして、彼らに自分たちが獣にすぎないことを悟らせられるのである」と。

I said in my heart concerning the state of the sons of men, that God might surely test them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

19 人の子らに臨むところは獣にも臨むからである。すなわち一様に彼らに臨み、これの死ぬように、彼も死ぬのである。彼らはみな同様の息をもっている。人は獣にまさるところがない。すべてのものは空だからである。

For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.

20 みな一つ所に行く。皆ちりから出て、皆ちりに帰る。

All go to one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

21 だれが知るか、人の子らの霊は上にのぼり、獣の霊は地にくだるかを。

Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

22 それで、わたしは見た、人はその働きによって楽しむにこした事はない。これが彼の分だからである。だれが彼をつれていって、その後の、どうなるかを見させることができようか。

Therefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?
