1 レハベアムはシケムへ行った。すべてのイスラエルびとが彼を王にしようとシケムへ行ったからである。
And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for to Shechem had all Israel come to make him king.
2 ネバテの子ヤラベアムは、ソロモンを避けてエジプトにのがれていたが、これを聞いてエジプトから帰ったので、
And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king, heard it, that Jeroboam returned from Egypt.
3 人々は人をつかわして彼を招いた。そこでヤラベアムとすべてのイスラエルは来て、レハベアムに言った、
And they sent and called him. So Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,
4 「あなたの父は、われわれのくびきを重くしましたが、今あなたの父のきびしい使役と、あなたの父が、われわれに負わせた重いくびきを軽くしてください。そうすればわたしたちはあなたに仕えましょう」。
Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
5 レハベアムは彼らに答えた、「三日の後、またわたしの所に来なさい」。それで民は去った。
And he said to them, Come again to me after three days. And the people departed.
6 レハベアム王は父ソロモンの存命中ソロモンに仕えた長老たちに相談して言った、「あなたがたはこの民にどう返答すればよいと思いますか」。
And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
7 彼らはレハベアムに言った、「あなたがもしこの民を親切にあつかい、彼らを喜ばせ、ねんごろに語られるならば彼らは長くあなたのしもべとなるでしょう」。
And they spoke to him, saying, If thou wilt be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
8 しかし彼は長老たちが与えた勧めをすてて、自分と一緒に大きくなって自分に仕えている若者たちに相談して、
But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him.
9 彼らに言った、「あなたがたは、この民がわたしに向かって、『あなたの父上が、われわれに負わせたくびきを軽くしてください』と言うのに、われわれはなんと返答すればよいと思いますか」。
And he said to them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father put upon us?
10 彼と一緒に大きくなった若者たちは彼に言った、「あなたに向かって、『あなたの父は、われわれのくびきを重くしたが、あなたは、それをわれわれのために軽くしてください』と言ったこの民に、こう言いなさい、『わたしの小指は父の腰よりも太い、
And the young men that were brought up with him spoke to him, saying, Thus shalt thou answer the people that spoke to thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it somewhat lighter for us; thus shalt thou say to them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s thighs.
11 父はあなたがたに重いくびきを負わせたが、わたしはさらに、あなたがたのくびきを重くしよう。父はむちであなたがたを懲らしたが、わたしはさそりであなたがたを懲らそう』」。
For though my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
12 さてヤラベアムと民は皆、王が「三日目にわたしのところに来なさい」と言ったとおりに、三日目にレハベアムのところへ行った。
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king appointed, saying, Come again to me on the third day.
13 王は荒々しく彼らに答えた。すなわちレハベアム王は長老たちの勧めをすて、
And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men,
14 若者たちの勧めに従い、彼らに告げて言った、「父はあなたがたのくびきを重くしたが、わたしは更にこれを重くしよう。父はむちであなたがたを懲らしたが、わたしはさそりであなたがたを懲らそう」。
And answered them after the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
15 このように王は民の言うことを聞きいれなかった。これは主が、かつてシロびとアヒヤによって、ネバテの子ヤラベアムに言われた言葉を成就するために、神がなされたのであった。
So the king hearkened not to the people: for the cause was of God, that the LORD might perform his word, which he spoke by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 イスラエルの人々は皆、王が自分たちの言うことを聞きいれないのを見たので、民は王に答えて言った、「われわれはダビデのうちに何の分があろうか。われわれはエッサイの子のうちに嗣業がない。イスラエルよ、めいめいの天幕に帰れ。ダビデよ、今あなたの家を見よ」。そしてイスラエルは皆彼らの天幕へ去って行った。
And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have no inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thy own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
17 しかしレハベアムはユダの町々に住んでいるイスラエルの人々を治めた。
But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 レハベアム王は徴募人の監督であったアドラムをつかわしたが、イスラエルの人々が石で彼を撃ち殺したので、レハベアム王は急いで車に乗り、エルサレムに逃げた。
Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the forced labour; and the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. But king Rehoboam made speed to get into his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 こうしてイスラエルはダビデの家にそむいて今日に至った。
And Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.
