ヨハネの手紙第一 3
1 わたしたちが神の子と呼ばれるためには、どんなに大きな愛を父から賜わったことか、よく考えてみなさい。わたしたちは、すでに神の子なのである。世がわたしたちを知らないのは、父を知らなかったからである。
Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knows us not, because it knew him not.
2 愛する者たちよ。わたしたちは今や神の子である。しかし、わたしたちがどうなるのか、まだ明らかではない。彼が現れる時、わたしたちは、自分たちが彼に似るものとなることを知っている。そのまことの御姿を見るからである。
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it does not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 彼についてこの望みをいだいている者は皆、彼がきよくあられるように、自らをきよくする。
And every man that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.
4 すべて罪を犯す者は、不法を行う者である。罪は不法である。
Whoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 あなたがたが知っているとおり、彼は罪をとり除くために現れたのであって、彼にはなんらの罪がない。
And you know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 すべて彼におる者は、罪を犯さない。すべて罪を犯す者は彼を見たこともなく、知ったこともない者である。
Whoever stays in him sins not: whoever sins has not seen him, neither known him.
7 子たちよ。だれにも惑わされてはならない。彼が義人であると同様に、義を行う者は義人である。
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 罪を犯す者は、悪魔から出た者である。悪魔は初めから罪を犯しているからである。神の子が現れたのは、悪魔のわざを滅ぼしてしまうためである。
He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 すべて神から生れた者は、罪を犯さない。神の種が、その人のうちにとどまっているからである。また、その人は、神から生れた者であるから、罪を犯すことができない。
Whoever is born of God does not commit sin; for his seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 神の子と悪魔の子との区別は、これによって明らかである。すなわち、すべて義を行わない者は、神から出た者ではない。兄弟を愛さない者も、同様である。
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loves not his brother.
11 わたしたちは互に愛し合うべきである。これが、あなたがたの初めから聞いていたおとずれである。
For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 カインのようになってはいけない。彼は悪しき者から出て、その兄弟を殺したのである。なぜ兄弟を殺したのか。彼のわざが悪く、その兄弟のわざは正しかったからである。
Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And why slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13 兄弟たちよ。世があなたがたを憎んでも、驚くには及ばない。
Marvel not, my brothers, if the world hate you.
14 わたしたちは、兄弟を愛しているので、死からいのちへ移ってきたことを、知っている。愛さない者は、死のうちにとどまっている。
We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brothers. He that loves not his brother stays in death.
Whoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. (aiōnios g166)
16 主は、わたしたちのためにいのちを捨てて下さった。それによって、わたしたちは愛ということを知った。それゆえに、わたしたちもまた、兄弟のためにいのちを捨てるべきである。
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
17 世の富を持っていながら、兄弟が困っているのを見て、あわれみの心を閉じる者には、どうして神の愛が、彼のうちにあろうか。
But whoever has this world’s good, and sees his brother have need, and shuts up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwells the love of God in him?
18 子たちよ。わたしたちは言葉や口先だけで愛するのではなく、行いと真実とをもって愛し合おうではないか。
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 それによって、わたしたちが真理から出たものであることがわかる。そして、神のみまえに心を安んじていよう。
And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 なぜなら、たといわたしたちの心に責められるようなことがあっても、神はわたしたちの心よりも大いなるかたであって、すべてをご存じだからである。
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
21 愛する者たちよ。もし心に責められるようなことがなければ、わたしたちは神に対して確信を持つことができる。
Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22 そして、願い求めるものは、なんでもいただけるのである。それは、わたしたちが神の戒めを守り、みこころにかなうことを、行っているからである。
And whatever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 その戒めというのは、神の子イエス・キリストの御名を信じ、わたしたちに命じられたように、互に愛し合うべきことである。
And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 神の戒めを守る人は、神におり、神もまたその人にいます。そして、神がわたしたちのうちにいますことは、神がわたしたちに賜わった御霊によって知るのである。
And he that keeps his commandments dwells in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he stays in us, by the Spirit which he has given us.
