ルカの福音書 1
1 わたしたちの間で実現したさまざまな事柄について，
Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
2 初めからの目撃証人またみ言葉の奉仕者であった者たちがわたしたちに伝えたとおりに，その物語を順序正しくまとめようと，すでに多くの人が手を着けてきましたが，
Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
3 わたしもすべての成り立ちを初めからつぶさにたどりましたので，テオフィロス閣下，あなたに順序正しく書いて差し上げるのが良いと思いました。
It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
4 それは，学ばれた事柄が確実なものであることを知っていただくためです。
That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
5 ユダヤの王ヘロデの時代に，アビヤの祭司組の者で，ザカリアという名の祭司がいた。彼にはアロンの娘である妻がいて，名をエリザベツといった。
There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 二人とも神の前に正しい者で，主のすべてのおきてと法令の内を非の打ちどころなく歩んでいた。
And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7 しかし彼らには子供がなかった。エリザベツが不妊であり，二人ともかなり年を取っていたからである。
And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
8 さて，彼が自分の組の順番に従って神の前で祭司職を務めていたときのこと，
And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course,
9 祭司職の習慣に従って彼が主の聖所に入って香をたくことになった。
According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
10 民の群衆はみな，香の時刻に外で祈っていた。
And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
11 主のみ使いが彼に現われて，香の祭壇の右側に立っていた。
And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 ザカリアはそれを見て動転し，恐れにとらわれた。
And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 しかしみ使いは彼に言った，「恐れてはいけない，ザカリアよ，あなたの願いは聞き入れられたからだ。すなわち，あなたの妻エリザベツは，あなたに男の子を産むだろう。そして，あなたはその名をヨハネと呼ぶことになる。
But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 あなたには歓喜と喜びとがあり，多くの人がその誕生を喜ぶだろう。
And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 彼は主のみ前で大いなる者となり，ぶどう酒や酔わせる飲み物を飲まないからだ。彼は母の胎にいる時から聖霊に満たされるだろう。
For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.
16 彼は多くのイスラエルの子らを，その神なる主に立ち返らせるだろう。
And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17 彼はエリヤの霊と力のうちにそのみ前を行くだろう。『父たちの心を子供たちに立ち返らせ』，不従順な者たちを義人の知恵に立ち返らせ，準備のできた民を主のために備えるためだ」。
And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18 ザカリアはみ使いに言った，「どうしてそのことを信用できるでしょうか。わたしは老人ですし，わたしの妻もかなり年を取っているからです」。
And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 み使いは彼に答えた，「わたしはガブリエル，神のみ前に立つ者だ。わたしはあなたに語るため，この良いたよりをあなたにもたらすために遣わされたのだ。
And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
20 見よ，これらの事が起きるその日まで，あなたは声が出ず，ものが言えなくなるだろう。しかるべき時に実現するわたしのこれらの言葉を信じなかったからだ」。
And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 民はザカリアを待っていたが，彼が聖所で手間取っているのを不思議に思っていた。
And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
22 外に出て来た時，彼は彼らに話すことができなかった。そこで彼らは，彼が聖所で幻を見たのだと分かった。彼は彼らに手まねを続けるだけで，口がきけないままであった。
And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
23 その奉仕の日々が満ちた時，彼は自分の家に帰って行った。
And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24 こうした日々ののち，彼の妻エリザベツは子を宿し，五か月の間引きこもって，こう言った，
And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 「主はこのごろ，人々の中での恥辱を取り去るためにわたしに目を向けてくださり，わたしに対してこのようにしてくださいました」。
Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26 さて，六か月目に，み使いガブリエルが，神からガリラヤのナザレという名の町に遣わされた。
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 ダビデの家のヨセフという名の男と結婚を誓っていた，一人の処女のもとに遣わされたのである。その処女の名前はマリアといった。
To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 み使いは入って来ると彼女に言った，「喜べ，大いに恵まれた者よ。主があなたと共におられる。女たちの中であなたは幸いな人だ！」
And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 しかし，彼を見た時，彼女はその言葉にひどく動転し，いったいこれは何のあいさつなのだろうと考えていた。
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 み使いは彼女に言った，「恐れてはいけない，マリアよ，あなたは神からの恵みを見いだしたからだ。
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 見よ，あなたは胎内に子を宿し，男の子を産むだろう。そして，その名を『イエス』と呼ぶことになる。
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 彼は偉大になり，いと高き方の子と呼ばれるだろう。主なる神は彼にその父ダビデの王座をお与えになるだろう。
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (aiōn g165)
34 マリアはみ使いに言った，「どうしてそのようなことが起こり得るのでしょうか。わたしは処女ですのに」。
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 み使いは彼女に答えた，「聖霊があなたの上に臨み，いと高き方の力があなたを影で覆うだろう。それゆえにも，あなたから生まれる聖なる者は神の子と呼ばれることになる。
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 見よ，あなたの親族エリザベツも老齢で男の子を宿している。不妊と呼ばれていた彼女が六か月目になっている。
And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 神によって語られたことはすべてが可能なのだ」。
For no word spoken by God shall be void of power.
38 マリアは言った，「ご覧ください，主の女召使いです。あなたのお言葉どおりのことがわたしに起きますように」。 み使いは彼女から去って行った。
And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39 そのころ，マリアは立ち上がり，急いで山岳地帯に向かい，ユダのある町に行き，
And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah;
40 ザカリアの家に入ってエリザベツにあいさつした。
And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 エリザベツがマリアのあいさつを聞いた時，その胎内で赤子が飛び跳ねて，エリザベツは聖霊に満たされた。
And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 彼女は大声で叫んでこう言った，「女たちの中であなたは幸いな人，あなたの胎の実も幸いなもの！
And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 わたしはなぜこれほど恵まれているのでしょう，わたしの主の母がわたしのもとに来てくださるとは。
And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 ご覧なさい，あなたのあいさつの声がわたしの耳に入った時，わたしの胎内の赤子は喜んで飛び跳ねたのです！
For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 信じた女は幸いです。主から語られた事柄は実現するからです！」
And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 マリアは言った， 「わたしの魂は主をたたえます。
And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 わたしの霊は，わたしの救い主なる神を喜びます。
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 卑しい身分の女召使いに目をとめてくださったからです。ご覧ください，今からのち，あらゆる世代の人々がわたしを幸いな者と呼ぶでしょう。
For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 強力な方がわたしのために大いなる事柄をなさったからです。そのみ名は神聖です。
For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 そのあわれみは世々にわたり，その方を恐れる人々の上に臨みます。
And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 主はそのみ腕で力を示されました。心の想いの高慢な者たちを散らされました。
He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 君主たちをその座から引き降ろされました。そして身分の低い者たちを高くされました。
He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 飢えた者たちを数々の良い物で満たされました。富んだ者たちを何も持たせないで帰らされました。
He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 あわれみを忘れないために，ご自分の召使いイスラエルに助けを与えられました。
He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. (aiōn g165)
56 マリアは彼女のもとに三か月ほど滞在し，それから自分の家に帰って行った。
And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
57 さて，エリザベツの出産する時が満ちて，彼女は男の子を産んだ。
Now Elisabeth’s full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58 彼女の隣人や親族は，主が彼女のためにそのあわれみを増してくださったと聞いて，彼女と共に喜んだ。
And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 八日目のこと，人々が幼子に割礼を施すためにやって来て，彼を父の名にならってザカリアと呼ぼうとした。
And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 その母は答えた，「それはいけません，ヨハネと呼ばれるのです」。
And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 人々は彼女に言った，「あなたの親族の中ではその名によって呼ばれている者は一人もいない」。
And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62 人々はその父に向かって，その子を何と呼びたいのかと手まねをした。
And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 彼は書き板を求め，「その名はヨハネ」と書いた。 人々はみな驚いた。
And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64 すぐに彼の口は開き，舌は解かれ，語り出して神を賛美した。
And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
65 近くに住む人々すべての上に恐れが臨み，これらのすべての話がユダヤの山岳地帯のあらゆる所でうわさされた。
And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa.
66 それを聞いた者たちはみな，それを自分の心に留めて，「この子はいったい何になるのだろう」と言った。主の手が彼と共にあった。
And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 その父ザカリアは，聖霊に満たされ，預言してこう言った。
And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68 「イスラエルの神なる主が賛美されるように。その民に目を向けて請け戻しをされたからだ。
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69 そして，その召使いダビデの家に，わたしたちのための救いの角を起こされた。
And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: (aiōn g165)
71 わたしたちの敵からの救い，またわたしたちを憎むすべての者の手からの救いを。
That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72 わたしたちの父祖たちにあわれみを示し，その聖なる契約を忘れないために。
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73 わたしたちの父祖アブラハムに立てられた誓い，
The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74 それがわたしたちにもたらすことは，わたしたちが敵の手から解き放たれ，恐れることなくその方に仕えること，
That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75 わたしたちの命の日々の限り，神聖さと義のうちに，そのみ前で仕えることなのだ。
In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76 そして子供よ，お前はいと高き方の預言者と呼ばれるだろう。お前は主の面前を行き，その道を整え，
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77 その民に罪の許しによる救いの知識を与えることになるからだ。
To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78 それは，わたしたちの神の優しいあわれみによる。そのあわれみによって，夜明けが高い所からわたしたちに訪れ，
Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79 闇と死の陰に座る者たちの上に輝き，わたしたちの足を平和の道に導くだろう」。
To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 幼子は成長し，霊において強くなってゆき，イスラエルに対する公の出現の日まで寂しい所にいた。
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
