Luca 19
1 E [GESÙ], essendo entrato in Gerico, passava per la città.
Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town.
2 Ed ecco un uomo, detto per nome Zaccheo, il quale era il capo de' pubblicani, ed era ricco;
There was a man there, known by the name of Zacchaeus, who was a commissioner of taxes and a rich man.
3 e cercava di veder Gesù, [per saper] chi egli era; ma non poteva per la moltitudine, perciocchè egli era piccolo di statura.
He tried to see what Jesus was like; but, being short, he was unable to do so because of the crowd.
4 E corse innanzi, e salì sopra un sicomoro, per vederlo; perciocchè egli avea da passare per quella [via].
So he ran on ahead and climbed into a mulberry tree, to see Jesus, for he knew that he must pass that way.
5 E come Gesù fu giunto a quel luogo, alzò gli occhi, e lo vide, e gli disse: Zaccheo, scendi giù prestamente, perciocchè oggi ho ad albergare in casa tua.
When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him: “Zacchaeus, be quick and come down, for I must stop at your house to-day.”
6 Ed egli scese prestamente, e lo ricevette con allegrezza.
So Zacchaeus got down quickly, and joyfully welcomed him.
7 E tutti, veduto [ciò], mormoravano, dicendo: Egli è andato ad albergare in casa d'un uomo peccatore.
On seeing this, every one began to complain: “He has gone to stay with a man who is an outcast.”
8 E Zaccheo, presentatosi al Signore, gli disse: Signore, io dono la metà di tutti i miei beni a' poveri; e se ho frodato alcuno, io gliene fo la restituzione a quattro doppi.
But Zacchaeus stood forward and said to the Master: “Listen, Master! I will give half my property to the poor, and, if I have defrauded any one of anything, I will give him back four times as much.”
9 E Gesù gli disse: Oggi è avvenuta salute a questa casa; poichè anche costui è figliuol d'Abrahamo.
“Salvation has come to this house to-day,” answered Jesus, “for even this man is a son of Abraham.
10 Perciocchè il Figliuol dell'uomo è venuto per cercare, e per salvare ciò ch'era perito.
The Son of Man has come to ‘search for those who are lost’ and to save them.”
11 OR ascoltando essi queste cose, [Gesù] soggiunse, e disse una parabola; perciocchè egli era vicino a Gerusalemme, ed essi stimavano che il regno di Dio apparirebbe subito in quello stante. Disse adunque:
As the people were listening to this, Jesus went on to tell them a parable. He did so because he was near Jerusalem, and because they thought that the Kingdom of God was going to be proclaimed at once.
12 Un uomo nobile andò in paese lontano, per prender [la possession d]'un regno, e poi tornare.
He said: “A nobleman once went to a distant country to receive his appointment to a Kingdom and then return.
13 E chiamati a sè dieci suoi servitori, diede loro dieci mine, e disse loro: Trafficate, finchè io venga.
He called ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds each, and told them to trade with them during his absence.
14 Or i suoi cittadini l'odiavano, e gli mandarono dietro un'ambasciata, dicendo: Noi non vogliamo che costui regni sopra di noi.
But his subjects hated him and sent envoys after him to say ‘We will not have this man as our King.’
15 Ed avvenne che quando egli fu ritornato, dopo aver presa [la possessione] del regno, comandò che gli fosser chiamati que' servitori, a' quali avea dati i denari, acciocchè sapesse quanto ciascuno avea guadagnato trafficando.
On his return, after having been appointed King, he directed that the servants to whom he had given his money should be summoned, so that he might learn what amount of trade they had done.
16 E il primo si presentò, dicendo: Signore, la tua mina ne ha guadagnate altre dieci.
The first came up, and said ‘Sir, your ten pounds have made a hundred.’
17 Ed egli gli disse: Bene sta, buon servitore; perciocchè tu sei stato leale in cosa minima, abbi podestà sopra dieci città.
‘Well done, good servant!’ exclaimed the master. ‘As you have proved trustworthy in a very small matter, I appoint you governor over ten towns.’
18 Poi venne il secondo, dicendo: Signore, la tua mina ne ha guadagnate cinque.
When the second came, he said ‘Your ten pounds, Sir, have produced fifty.’
19 Ed egli disse ancora a costui: E tu sii sopra cinque città.
So the master said to him ‘And you I appoint over five towns.’
20 Poi ne venne un altro, che disse: Signore, ecco la tua mina, la quale io ho tenuta riposta in uno sciugatoio.
Another servant also came and said ‘Sir, here are your ten pounds; I have kept them put away in a handkerchief.
21 Perciocchè io ho avuto tema di te, perchè tu sei uomo aspro, [e] togli ciò che non hai messo, e mieti ciò che non hai seminato.
For I was afraid of you, because you are a stern man. You take what you have not planted, and reap what you have not sown.’
22 E [il suo signore] gli disse: Io ti giudicherò per la tua propria bocca, malvagio servitore; tu sapevi che io sono uomo aspro, che tolgo ciò che non ho messo, e mieto ciò che non ho seminato;
The master answered ‘Out of your own mouth I judge you, you worthless servant. You knew that I am a stern man, that I take what I have not planted, and reap what I have not sown?
23 perchè dunque non desti i miei denari a' banchieri, ed io, al mio ritorno, li avrei riscossi con frutto?
Then why did not you put my money into a bank? And I, on my return, could have claimed it with interest.
24 Allora egli disse a coloro ch'erano ivi presenti: Toglietegli la mina, e datela a colui che ha le dieci mine.
Take away from him the ten pounds,’ he said to those standing by, ‘and give them to the one who has the hundred.’
25 (Ed essi gli dissero: Signore, egli ha dieci mine).
‘But, Sir,’ they interposed, ‘he has a hundred pounds already!’
26 Perciocchè io vi dico, che a chiunque ha sarà dato; ma, a chi non ha, eziandio quel ch'egli ha gli sarà tolto.
‘I tell you,’ he answered, ‘that, to him who has, more will be given, but, from him who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.
27 Oltre a ciò, menate qua que' miei nemici, che non hanno voluto che io regnassi sopra loro, e scannateli in mia presenza.
But as for my enemies, these men who would not have me as their King, bring them here and put them to death in my presence.’”
28 ORA, avendo dette queste cose, egli andava innanzi, salendo in Gerusalemme.
After saying this, Jesus went on in front, going up to Jerusalem.
29 E come egli fu vicin di Betfage, e di Betania, presso al monte detto degli Ulivi, mandò due de' suoi discepoli, dicendo:
It was when Jesus had almost reached Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, that he sent on two of the disciples.
30 Andate nel castello, che è qui di rincontro; nel quale essendo entrati, troverete un puledro [d'asino] legato, sopra il quale niun uomo giammai montò; scioglietelo, e menatemelo.
“Go to the village facing us,” he said, “and, when you get there, you will find a foal tethered, which no one has yet ridden; untie it and lead it here.
31 E se alcun vi domanda perchè voi lo sciogliete, ditegli così: Perciocchè il Signore ne ha bisogno.
And, if anybody asks you ‘Why are you untying it?,’ you are to say this — ‘The Master wants it.’”
32 E coloro ch'erano mandati andarono, e trovarono come egli avea lor detto.
So the two who were sent went and found it as Jesus had told them.
33 E come essi scioglievano il puledro, i padroni d'esso dissero loro: Perchè sciogliete voi quel puledro?
While they were untying the foal, the owners asked them — “Why are you untying the foal?”
34 Ed essi dissero: Il Signore ne ha bisogno.
And the two disciples answered — “The Master wants it.”
35 E lo menarono a Gesù; e gettaron le lor vesti sopra il puledro, e vi fecero montar Gesù sopra.
Then they led it back to Jesus, and threw their cloaks on the foal and put Jesus upon it.
36 E mentre egli camminava, stendevan le lor veste nella via.
As he went along, the people kept spreading their cloaks in the road.
37 E come egli già era presso della scesa del monte degli Ulivi, tutta la moltitudine de' discepoli con allegrezza prese a lodare Iddio con gran voce, per tutte le potenti operazioni che avean vedute;
When he had almost reached the place where the road led down the Mount of Olives, every one of the many disciples began in their joy to praise God loudly for all the miracles that they had seen:
38 dicendo: Benedetto [sia] il Re che viene nel nome del Signore; pace in cielo, e gloria ne' luoghi altissimi!
“Blessed is He who comes — Our King — in the name of the Lord! Peace in Heaven, And glory on high.”
39 Ed alcuni de' Farisei d'infra la moltitudine gli dissero: Maestro, sgrida i tuoi discepoli!
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him: “Teacher, reprove your disciples.”
40 Ed egli, rispondendo, disse loro: Io vi dico che se costoro si tacciono, le pietre grideranno.
But Jesus answered: “I tell you that if these men are silent, the very stones will call out.”
41 E come egli fu presso della città, veggendola, pianse sopra lei, dicendo:
When he drew near, on seeing the city, he wept over it, and said:
42 Oh! se tu ancora, almeno in questo giorno, avessi riconosciute le cose [appartenenti] alla tua pace! ma ora, esse son nascoste agli occhi tuoi.
“Would that you had known, while yet there was time — even you — the things that make for peace! But now they have been hidden from your sight.
43 Perciocchè ti sopraggiungeranno giorni, ne' quali i tuoi nemici ti faranno degli argini attorno, e ti circonderanno, e ti assedieranno d'ogn'intorno.
For a time is coming upon you when your enemies will surround you with earthworks, and encircle you, and hem you in on all sides;
44 Ed atterreranno te, e i tuoi figliuoli dentro di te; e non lasceranno in te pietra sopra pietra; perciocchè tu non hai riconosciuto il tempo della tua visitazione.
they will trample you down and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know ‘the time of your visitation.’”
45 POI, entrato nel tempio, prese a cacciare coloro che vendevano, e che comperavano in esso;
Jesus went into the Temple Courts and began to drive out those who were selling,
46 dicendo loro: Egli è scritto: La casa mia è casa di orazione; ma voi ne avete fatta una spelonca di ladroni.
saying as he did so: “Scripture says — ‘My House shall be a House of Prayer’; but you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”
47 Ed ogni giorno egli insegnava nel tempio. Ed i principali sacerdoti, e gli Scribi, e i capi del popolo cercavano di farlo morire.
Jesus continued to teach each day in the Temple Courts; but the Chief Priests and Teachers of the Law were eager to take his life, and so also were the leading men.
48 E non trovavano che cosa potesser fare, perciocchè tutto il popolo pendeva [dalla sua bocca], ascoltandolo.
Yet they could not see what to do, for the people all hung upon his words.
