Giovanni 5

1 DOPO queste cose v'era una festa de' Giudei; e Gesù salì in Gerusalemme.

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem when the Jews were having [another] celebration.

2 Or in Gerusalemme, presso della [porta] delle pecore, v'è una pescina, detta in Ebreo Betesda, che ha cinque portici.

At one of the gates [into the city] called the Sheep Gate, there is a pool. In our language we call it Bethzatha. [Around the pool] were five open areas with roofs over them.

3 In essi giaceva gran moltitudine d'infermi, di ciechi, di zoppi, di secchi, aspettando il movimento dell'acqua.

Many people were lying there. They were people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed.

4 Perciocchè di tempo in tempo un angelo scendeva nella pescina, ed intorbidava l'acqua; e il primo che vi entrava, dopo l'intorbidamento dell'acqua, era sanato, di qualunque malattia egli fosse tenuto.

5 Or quivi era un certo uomo, ch'era stato infermo trentotto anni.

One of those who was there had been paralyzed for 38 years.

6 Gesù, veduto costui giacere, e sapendo che già lungo tempo era stato [infermo], gli disse: Vuoi tu esser sanato?

Jesus saw him lying there and found out that the man had been like that for a long time. He said to the man, “Do you want to become well?”

7 L'infermo gli rispose: Signore, io non ho alcuno che mi metta nella pescina, quando l'acqua è intorbidata; e quando io [vi] vengo, un altro [vi] scende prima di me.

The paralyzed man replied to him, “[Yes], sir, [I want to get well, but] there is no one to help me get down into the pool when the water is stirred {stirs}. While I am trying to get [to the pool], someone else always gets there before me.”

8 Gesù gli disse: Levati, togli il tuo letticello, e cammina.

Jesus said to him, “Get up! Then pick up your mat and walk!”

9 E in quello stante quell'uomo fu sanato, e tolse il suo letticello, e camminava. Or in quel giorno era sabato.

The man immediately was healed. He picked up his mat and started walking! The day on which this happened was a Jewish day of rest.

10 Laonde i Giudei dissero a colui ch'era stato sanato: Egli è sabato; non ti è lecito di togliere il tuo letticello.

So the Jewish [leaders] said to the man who had been healed, “Today is (the Sabbath/our rest day), and [in our Jewish] laws [it is written that people should not work on our] ([Sabbath/rest day]), so you should not be carrying your mat!”

11 Egli rispose loro: Colui che mi ha sanato mi ha detto: Togli il tuo letticello, e cammina.

The man replied to them, “The man who healed me, he himself said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk!’”

12 Ed essi gli domandarono: Chi è quell'uomo che ti ha detto: Togli il tuo letticello, e cammina?

They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick it up and walk!’?”

13 Or colui ch'era stato sanato non sapeva chi egli fosse; perciocchè Gesù s'era sottratto dalla moltitudine ch'era in quel luogo.

But since Jesus had disappeared in the crowd [without telling the man his name], the man did not know who it was [who had healed him].

14 Di poi Gesù lo trovò nel tempio, e gli disse: Ecco, tu sei stato sanato; non peccar più, che peggio non ti avvenga.

Later, Jesus found the man in the Temple [courtyard]. He [told the man his name, and] said to him, “Listen! You are healed! So stop sinning! If you do not stop sinning, something will happen to you that will be worse [than the illness you had before]!”

15 Quell'uomo se ne andò, e rapportò ai Giudei che Gesù era quel che l'avea sanato.

The man went away and told the Jewish [leaders] [SYN] that it was Jesus who had healed him.

16 E PERCIÒ i Giudei perseguivano Gesù, e cercavano d'ucciderlo, perciocchè avea fatte quelle cose in sabato.

So the Jewish [leaders] [SYN] started to harass Jesus, because Jesus was doing these things (on the Sabbath/on the Jewish rest day).

17 Ma Gesù rispose loro: Il Padre mio opera infino ad ora, ed io ancora opero.

Then Jesus replied to them, “My Father has always been working every day, [including] ([the Sabbath/the day of rest]), up until now. I am doing the same thing!”

18 Perciò adunque i Giudei cercavano vie più d'ucciderlo, perciocchè non solo violava il sabato, ma ancora diceva Iddio [esser] suo Padre, facendosi uguale a Dio.

The Jewish leaders [SYN] considered that he was disobeying their rules about (the Sabbath/the day of rest), and that by saying that God was his Father, he was making himself equal with God. And they considered that both these things were grounds for killing him. So they tried even harder to find a way to kill him.

19 Laonde Gesù rispose, e disse loro: In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che il Figliuolo non può far nulla da sè stesso, ma [fa] ciò che vede fare al Padre, perciocchè le cose ch'esso fa, il Figliuolo le fa anch'egli simigliantemente.

Jesus replied to them by saying, “You need to know this: I can do nothing by my own [authority]. I do only the [kind of] things that I see [my] Father doing. Whatever kinds of things my Father is doing, those are the things I am doing.

20 Poichè il Padre ama il Figliuolo, e gli mostra tutte le cose ch'egli fa; ed anche gli mostrerà opere maggiori di queste, acciocchè voi vi maravigliate.

[My] Father loves me, and he shows me everything that he is doing. He will show me [the miracles] that [he wants me to do] that will be greater than the ones that [you have already seen me do], so that you may be amazed.

21 Perciocchè, siccome il Padre suscita i morti, e li vivifica, così ancora il Figliuolo vivifica coloro ch'egli vuole.

[For example], just like [my] Father causes people who have died to become alive again, I will give [eternal] life to everyone that I want to.

22 Poichè il Padre non giudica alcuno, ma ha dato tutto il giudicio al Figliuolo;

Furthermore, [my] Father is not the one who judges people [concerning their sins]. Instead, he has given to me the work of judging people,

23 acciocchè tutti onorino il Figliuolo, come onorano il Padre; chi non onora il Figliuolo, non onora il Padre che l'ha mandato.

in order that all people may honor me, just like they honor [my] Father. [My] Father [considers that] anyone who does not honor me is not honoring [him], the one who sent me.

24 In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che chi ode la mia parola, e crede a colui che mi ha mandato, ha vita eterna, e non viene in giudicio; anzi è passato dalla morte alla vita. (aiōnios g166)

Listen to this carefully: Those who hear my message and believe that [God] is the one who sent me have eternal life. [God will] not (condemn them/say that he will punish them). They are no longer separated from God. Instead, they have [eternal] life. (aiōnios g166)

25 In verità, in verità, io vi dico, che l'ora viene, e [già] al presente è, che i morti udiranno la voce del Figliuol di Dio, e coloro che l'avranno udita viveranno.

Listen to this carefully: There will be a time when those who are (spiritually dead/separated from God) will hear the voice of me, (the Son of God/the man who is also God). In fact, it is that time already. Those who hear [and pay attention to my message] will have [eternal] life.

26 Perciocchè, siccome il Padre ha vita in sè stesso,

[My] Father has [power to] make things live. Similarly, he has given me the [power to enable] people to live [eternally].

27 così ha dato ancora al Figliuolo d'aver vita in sè stesso; e gli ha data podestà eziandio di far giudicio, in quanto egli è Figliuol d'uomo.

Because I am the one who came from heaven, he has given me the authority to judge people [concerning their sins].

28 Non vi maravigliate di questo; perciocchè l'ora viene, che tutti coloro che [son] ne' monumenti udiranno la sua voce;

Do not be surprised about that, because there will be a time when all people who have died will hear my voice,

29 ed usciranno, coloro che avranno fatto bene, in risurrezion di vita; e coloro che avranno fatto male, in risurrezion di condannazione.

and they will become alive again. Those who have lived good [lives] will rise [from their graves] and live forever. But those who have lived evil lives will rise, and I will (condemn them/declare that I will punish them [for their sins]).

30 Io non posso da me stesso far cosa alcuna; io giudico secondo che io odo; e il mio giudicio è giusto, perciocchè io non cerco la mia volontà, me la volontà del Padre che mi ha mandato.

I do not do anything [like that] by my own authority. I judge people only according to what I hear [my Father tell me]. I will judge people fairly, because I do not want to please only myself. Instead, I want to please [my Father], who sent me.

31 Se io testimonio di me stesso, la mia testimonianza non è verace.

If I were the [only] one to tell people about myself, [people could rightly say that] what I say is not true.

32 V'è un altro che rende testimonianza di me, ed io so che la testimonianza ch'egli rende di me è verace.

But there is someone else who tells people about me. And I know that what he tells people about me is true.

33 Voi mandaste a Giovanni, ed egli rendette testimonianza alla verità.

As for you, when you sent messengers to John [the Baptizer to ask about me], he told the truth [about me].

34 Or io non prendo testimonianza da uomo alcuno, ma dico queste cose, acciocchè siate salvati.

I do not [need that] people tell others [about me]. But instead, I am reminding [you about what John told people about me], in order that you will [believe it and] be saved {[God] will save you}.

35 Esso era una lampana ardente, e lucente; e voi volentieri gioiste, per un breve tempo, alla sua luce.

[John’s message about me] (OR, [John]) [MET] was [like] a lamp that shines brightly. For a short while you were willing to be made happy [by that message] {to let [that message] make you happy}.

36 Ma io ho la testimonianza maggiore di quella di Giovanni, poichè le opere che il Padre mi ha date ad adempiere, quelle opere, [dico], le quali io fo, testimoniano di me, che il Padre mio mi ha mandato.

But there is something else that tells you about me. [It should prove who I am] more than what John [said about me]. The miracles [PRS] that [my] Father told me to do, the miracles that I am performing, show (OR, prove) to people that my Father sent me.

37 Ed anche il Padre stesso che mi ha mandato ha testimoniato di me; voi non udiste giammai la sua voce, nè vedeste la sua sembianza;

Furthermore, [my] Father, who sent me, tells people about me. You have never heard his voice or seen him.

38 e non avete la sua parola dimorante in voi, perchè non credete a colui ch'egli ha mandato.

Furthermore, you have not believed in [me], the one he sent. So you have not [believed] his message in your inner beings.

39 Investigate le scritture, perciocchè voi pensate per esse aver vita eterna; ed esse son quelle che testimoniano di me. (aiōnios g166)

You carefully study (OR, Study) the Scriptures, because you think that by [studying] them you will [find the way to] have eternal life. And those Scriptures tell people about me! (aiōnios g166)

40 Ma voi non volete venire a me, acciocchè abbiate vita.

But you refuse (to come to me/to believe my message) in order that you may have [eternal] life.

41 Io non prendo gloria dagli uomini.

It does not [matter to] me whether people praise me.

42 Ma io vi conosco, che non avete l'amor di Dio in voi.

But you [want people to praise you]. I know that within yourselves you do not love God.

43 Io son venuto nel nome del Padre mio, e voi non mi ricevete; se un altro viene nel suo proprio nome, quello riceverete.

Although I have come to earth with my Father’s authority [MTY], you do not accept me. But if someone else comes with his own authority [MTY], you accept him!

44 Come potete voi credere, poichè prendete gloria gli uni dagli altri, e non cercate la gloria che [viene] da un solo Dio?

You accept your praising each other, but you do not try to do things that will result in God himself praising you. So (there is no way you can believe [in me]!/how can you believe [my message]?) [RHQ]

45 Non pensate che io vi accusi appo il Padre; v'è chi vi accusa, [cioè] Mosè, nel qual voi avete riposta la vostra speranza.

But do not think that I am the one who will accuse you while [my] Father is listening! No, it is Moses who will accuse you! You thought that he would [defend you].

46 Perciocchè, se voi credeste a Mosè, credereste ancora a me; poichè egli ha scritto di me.

Moses wrote about me, so if you had believed what he [wrote], you would have believed what I [said]

47 Ma se non credete agli scritti d'esso, come crederete alle mie parole?

But because you did not believe what he wrote [about me], (you will certainly not believe what I say!/how will you believe what I say?) [RHQ]”
