Giobbe 30

1 Ma ora, quelli che son minori d'età di me si ridono di me, I cui padri io non avrei degnato mettere Co' cani della mia graggia.

But now the youngest have laughed me to scorn, now they reprove me in [their] turn, whose fathers I set at nothing; whom I did not deem worthy [to be with] my shepherd dogs.

2 Ed anche, che mi avrebbe giovato la forza delle lor mani? La vecchiezza era perduta per loro.

Yes, why had I the strength of their hands? for them the full term [of life] was lost.

3 Di bisogno e di fame, [Vivevano] in disparte, e solitari; Fuggivano in luoghi aridi, tenebrosi, desolati, e deserti.

[One is] childless in lack and famine, [such as] they that fled but lately the distress and misery of drought.

4 Coglievano la malva presso agli arboscelli, E le radici de' ginepri, per iscaldarsi.

Who compass the salt places on the sounding [shore], who had salt [herbs] for their food, and were dishonorable and of no repute, in lack of every good thing; who also ate roots of trees by reason of great hunger.

5 Erano scacciati d'infra [la gente]; Ei si gridava dietro a loro, come [dietro ad] un ladro.

Thieves have risen up against me,

6 Dimoravano ne' dirupi delle valli, Nelle grotte della terra e delle rocce.

whose houses were the caves of the rocks, who lived under the wild shrubs.

7 Ruggivano fra gli arboscelli; Si adunavano sotto a' cardi.

They will cry out among the rustling [bushes].

8 [Erano] gente da nulla, senza nome, Scacciata dal paese.

[They are] sons of fools and vile men, [whose] name and glory [are] quenched from off the earth.

9 Ed ora io son la lor canzone, E il soggetto de' lor ragionamenti.

But now I am their music, and they have me for a byword.

10 Essi mi abbominano, si allontanano da me, E non si rattengono di sputarmi nel viso.

And they stood aloof and abhorred me, and spared not to spit in my face.

11 Perciocchè [Iddio] ha sciolto il mio legame, e mi ha afflitto; Laonde essi hanno scosso il freno, [per non] riverir [più] la mia faccia.

For he has opened his quiver and afflicted me: they also have cast off the restraint of my presence.

12 I giovanetti si levano contro a me dalla [man] destra, mi spingono i piedi, E si appianano le vie contro a me, per [traboccarmi] in ruina;

They have risen up against [me] on the right hand of [their] offspring; they have stretched out their foot, and directed against me the ways of their destruction.

13 Hanno tagliato il mio cammino, si avanzano alla mia perdizione, Niuno li aiuta;

My paths are ruined; for they have stripped off my raiment: he has shot at me with his weapons.

14 Sono entrati come per una larga rottura, Si sono rotolati sotto le ruine.

And he has pleaded against me as he will: I am overwhelmed with pains.

15 Spaventi si son volti contro a me, Perseguitano l'anima mia come il vento; E la mia salvezza è passata via come una nuvola.

My pains return upon [me]; my hope is gone like the wind, and my safety as a cloud.

16 Ed ora l'anima mia si versa sopra me, I giorni dell'afflizione mi hanno aggiunto.

Even now my life shall be poured forth upon me; and days of anguish seize me.

17 Di notte egli mi trafigge l'ossa addosso; E le mie arterie non hanno alcuna posa.

And by night my bones are confounded; and my sinews are relaxed.

18 La mia vesta è tutta cangiata, per la quantità della marcia [delle piaghe], E mi stringe come la scollatura del mio saio.

With great force [my disease] has taken hold of my garment: it has compassed me as the collar of my coat.

19 Egli mi ha gittato nel fango, E paio polvere e cenere.

And you have counted me as clay; my portion in dust and ashes.

20 Io grido a te, e tu non mi rispondi; Io mi presento [davanti a te], e tu non poni mente a me.

And I have cried to you, but you hear me not: but they stood still, and observed me.

21 Tu ti sei mutato in crudele inverso me; Tu mi contrasti con la forza delle tue mani.

They attacked me also without mercy: you have scourged me with a strong hand.

22 Tu mi hai levato ad alto; tu mi fai cavalcar sopra il vento, E fai struggere in me ogni virtù.

And you have put me to grief, and have cast me away from safety.

23 Io so certamente che tu mi ridurrai alla morte, Ed alla casa assegnata ad ogni vivente.

For I know that death will destroy me: for the earth is the house [appointed] for every mortal.

24 Pur non istenderà egli la mano nell'avello; [Quelli che vi son dentro] gridano essi, quando egli distrugge?

Oh then that I might lay hands upon myself, or at least ask another, and he should do this for me.

25 Non piangeva io per cagion di colui che menava dura vita? L'anima mia non si addolorava ella per i bisognosi?

Yet I wept over every helpless man; I groaned when I saw a man in distress.

26 Perchè, avendo io sperato il bene, il mal sia venuto? Ed avendo aspettata la luce, sia giunta la caligine?

But I, when I waited for good things, behold, days of evils came the more upon me.

27 Le mie interiora bollono, e non hanno alcuna posa; I giorni dell'afflizione mi hanno incontrato.

My belly boiled, and would not cease: the days of poverty prevented me.

28 Io vo bruno attorno, non già del sole; Io mi levo in pien popolo, [e] grido.

I went mourning without restraint: and I have stood and cried out in the assembly.

29 Io son diventato fratello degli sciacalli, E compagno delle ulule.

I am become a brother of monsters, and a companion of ostriches.

30 La mia pelle mi si è imbrunita addosso, E le mie ossa son calcinate d'arsura.

And my skin has been greatly blackened, and my bones are burned with heat.

31 E la mia cetera si è mutata in duolo, E il mio organo in voce di pianto.

My harp also has been turned into mourning, and my song into my weeping.
