Isaia 21

1 COLUI vien dal deserto, dal paese spaventevole, a guisa di turbini, [che] passano nel paese del Mezzodì.

A message about the desert by the sea. Like storm winds passing through the Negev, something is coming from the desert, from a land of terror—

2 Una dura visione mi è stata annunziata. Il disleale [ha trovato] un disleale; il guastatore [ha trovato] un guastatore. Sali, Elam; Media, assedia; io ho fatto cessare ogni gemito.

a horrifying vision that has been explained to me. The betrayer still betrays; the destroyer still destroys. Elamites and Medes, go ahead, attack and lay siege to Babylon, for I'm putting a stop to all the pain it has caused.

3 Perciò i miei lombi son pieni di doglia; dolori mi hanno colto, simili a' dolori della donna che partorisce; io mi sono scontorto, per ciò che ho udito; e mi sono smarrito, per ciò che ho veduto.

As a result my body is filled with agony. I'm overwhelmed with pain, like the pain of a woman giving birth. I am confused by what I hear; I am distressed by what I see.

4 Il mio cuore è smarrito, orrore mi ha conturbato, il vespro de' miei diletti mi è stato cangiato in ispavento.

My mind falters; I shake in panic. The night I looked forward to has become terrifying.

5 Mentre la tavola sarà apparecchiata, [e] le guardie staranno alla veletta, [e] si mangerà, e si berra; levatevi, capitani, ungete lo scudo.

They set the table, they spread out the rugs, they eat and drink… “Get up, officers! Prepare your shields for battle!”

6 Percioechè così mi ha detto il Signore: Va', metti uno alla veletta, [ed] annunzii ciò ch'egli vedrà.

This is what the Lord told me: “Go! Have a lookout keep watch, and make sure he reports what he sees.

7 Ed egli vide carri, coppie di cavalieri, carri tirati da asini, [e] carri tirati da cammelli; e considerò [tutto ciò] molto attentamente.

When he sees chariots coming pulled by pairs of horses, riders on donkeys and on camels, he should watch very carefully, paying close attention.”

8 E gridò, [come] un leone: Io sto, Signore, del continuo nella veletta di giorno, e sto in piè nella mia guardia tutte le notti.

Then the lookout shouted “Sir, I've stood here on the watchtower day after day; night after night I've remained at my post.

9 Ed ecco, son venuti carri d'uomini, coppie di cavalieri. Ed egli rispose, e disse: Caduta, caduta è Babilonia, e tutte le sculture de' suoi dii sono state spezzate, [egittate] a terra.

Now look! A man in a chariot with a pair of horses is coming.” Then he said, “Babylon has fallen, has fallen! All the idols of its gods lie smashed on the ground!”

10 [Ella è] ciò che io ho adunato nella mia aia, per trebbiarlo. Io vi ho annunziato ciò che io ho udito dal Signor degli eserciti, dall'Iddio d'Israele.

My poor downtrodden people, so badly mistreated, I have told you what I have heard from the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel.

11 Il carico di Duma. EI si grida a me di Seir: Guardia, che [hai tu veduto] dopo la notte? Guardia, che [hai tu veduto] dopo la notte?

A message about Edom. A voice is calling to me from Seir, asking, “Watchman, what time of night is it? Watchman, what time of night is it?”

12 La guardia ha detto: La mattina è venuta, e poi anche la notte; se voi [ne] domandate, domandate pure, ritornate, venite.

The watchman replies, “Morning is coming, but the night is coming again soon. If you want to ask again, then come back and ask.”

13 Il carico contro all'Arabia. VOI passerete la notte nelle selve di Arabia, o carovane di Dedanei.

A message about Arabia. Caravans from Dedan, spend the night in the bushes.

14 Ei si è portato dell'acqua incontro agli assetati; gli abitanti del paese di Tema son venuti col loro pane incontro a' fuggenti.

People of Tema, take water to the thirsty, meet the refugees with food.

15 Perciocchè son fuggiti d'innanzi alle spade, d'innanzi alla spada tratta, d'innanzi all'arco teso, e d'innanzi allo sforzo della battaglia.

They're running away from a fierce battle, from swords, drawn swords, from bows and arrows.

16 Perciocchè il Signore mi ha detto così: Infa un anno, quale [è il termine de]gli anni di un servitore tolto a prezzo, tutta la gloria di Chedar verrà meno.

This is what the Lord told me: “Within one year, just as a contract worker precisely counts years, all the glory of Kedar will be gone.

17 E il rimanente del numero de' forti arcieri de' figliuoli di Chedar sarà poco; perciocchè il Signore Iddio d'Israele ha parlato. Il carico della Valle della visione.

There will only be a few left of the archers, the warriors of Kedar.” The Lord, the God of Israel, has spoken.
