Abacuc 3

1 L'orazione del profeta Abacuc, sopra Sighionot.

A PRAYER OF THE PROPHET AMBACUM, WITH A SONG.

2 O SIGNORE, io ho udito ciò che tu [mi] hai fatto udire; Signore, timore mi ha occupato; Conserva viva l'opera tua in mezzo degli anni, In mezzo degli anni [che] tu [ci] hai notificati; Nell'ira, ricordati di aver pietà.

O Lord, I have heard thy report, and was afraid: I considered thy works, and was amazed: thou shalt be known between the two living creatures, thou shalt be acknowledged when the years draw nigh; thou shalt be manifested when the time is come; when my soul is troubled, thou wilt in wrath remember mercy.

3 Iddio venne [già] di Teman; E il Santo, dal monte di Paran; (Sela) La sua gloria coperse i cieli, E la terra fu ripiena della sua lode.

God shall come from Thaeman, and the Holy One from the dark shady mount Pharan. (Pause)

4 Ed egi avea [intorno a sè] uno splendore simile al sole, E de' raggi a' suoi lati; E quivi [era] il nascondimento della sua gloria.

His excellence covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. And his brightness shall be as light; [there were] horns in his hands, and he caused a mighty love of his strength.

5 Davanti a lui camminava la pestilenza, E folgori uscivano dietro a lui.

Before his face shall go a report, and it shall go forth into the plains,

6 Egli si fermò, e misurò la terra; Egli riguardò, e rendette le genti fiacche; E i monti eterni furono scossi, [E] i colli antichi furono abbassati; Le andature eterne [son] sue.

the earth stood at his feet and trembled: he beheld, and the nations melted away: the mountains were violently burst through, the everlasting hills melted at his everlasting going forth.

7 Io ho veduto che le tende di Cusan, I padiglioni del paese di Madian, Tremarono di affanno.

Because of troubles I looked upon the tents of the Ethiopians: the tabernacles also of the land of Madiam shall be dismayed.

8 Il Signore s'era egli adirato contro a' fiumi? [Era] il tuo cruccio contro alle fiumane? [Era] la tua indegnazione contro al mare? Quando tu cavalcavi sopra i tuoi cavalli, I tuoi carri [erano] salvazione.

Wast thou angry, O Lord, with the rivers? or [was] thy wrath against the rivers, or thine anger against the sea? for thou wilt mount on thine horses, and thy chariots are salvation.

9 Il tuo arco fu tratto fuori, Il [tuo] parlare [era] esecrazioni, e dardi (Sela) Tu fendesti la terra in fiumi;

Surely thou didst bend they bow at scepters, saith the Lord. (Pause) The land of rivers shall be torn asunder.

10 I monti ti videro, [e] tremarono; Una piena d'acque passò; L'abisso diede la sua voce, Egli levò in alto le sue mani.

The nations shall see thee and be in pain, [as thou dost] divide the moving waters: the deep uttered her voice, and raised her form on high.

11 Il sole [e] la luna si fermarono nel [loro] abitacolo; Ei si camminò alla luce delle tue saette, Allo splendor del folgorar della tua lancia.

The sun was exalted, and the moon stood still in her course: thy darts shall go forth at the light, at the brightness of the gleaming of thine arms.

12 Tu camminasti sopra la terra con indegnazione, Tu trebbiasti le genti con ira.

Thou wilt bring low the land with threatening, and in wrath thou wilt break down the nations.

13 Tu uscisti fuori in salute del tuo popolo, In salute [sua] col tuo Unto; Tu trafiggesti il capo della casa dell'empio, Spianando[la] da cima a fondo. (Sela)

Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, to save thine anointed: thou shalt bring death on the heads of transgressors; thou has brought bands upon [their] neck. (Pause)

14 Tu trafiggesti, co' suoi dardi stessi, il capo delle villate di esso; Essi venivano a guisa di turbo, per dissiparmi; Il lor trionfo [era] come di [genti apparecchiate] a divorare il povero di nascosto.

Thou didst cut asunder the heads of princes with amazement, they shall tremble in it; they shall burst their bridles, [they shall be] as a poor man devouring in secret.

15 Tu camminasti co' tuoi cavalli sopra il mare, Sopra il mucchio delle grandi acque.

And thou dost cause thine horses to enter the sea, disturbing much water.

16 Or io ho udito, e le mie viscere si sono commosse, Le mie labbra han tremato a [quella] voce, Un tarlo mi è entrato nelle ossa, Io son tutto spaventato in me stesso; Come avrei io riposo nel giorno della distretta, Quando colui che darà il guasto al popolo salirà contro a lui?

I watched, and my belly trembled at the sound of the prayer of my lips, and trembling entered into my bones, and my frame was troubled within me; I will rest in the day of affliction, from going up to the people of my sojourning.

17 Perciocchè il fico non germoglierà, E non [vi sarà] frutto alcuno nelle viti; La rendita dell'ulivo fallirà, E i campi non produrranno cibo; Le gregge verranno meno nelle mandre, E non [vi saranno più] buoi nelle stalle.

For [though] the fig-tree shall bear no fruit, and there shall be no produce on the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall produce no food: the sheep have failed from the pasture, and there are no oxen at the cribs;

18 Ma pure, io trionferò nel Signore, Io festeggerò nell'Iddio della mia salute.

yet I will exult in the Lord, I will joy in God my Saviour.

19 Il Signore Iddio mio è la mia forza, E renderà i miei piedi simili a que' delle cerve, E mi condurrà sopra i miei alti luoghi. [Dato] al Capo de' Musici, sopra Neghinot.

The Lord God is my strength, and he will perfectly strengthen my feet; he mounts me upon high places, that I may conquer by his song.
