Esdra 4

1 OR i nemici di Giuda e di Beniamino, avendo inteso che quelli ch'erano stati in cattività, riedificavano il Tempio al Signore Iddio d'Israele,

And they that afflicted Juda and Benjamin heard, that the children of the captivity were building a house to the Lord God of Israel.

2 si accostarono a Zorobabel, ed a' capi delle [famiglie] paterne, e dissero loro: [Lasciate] che noi edifichiamo con voi; perciocchè noi desideriamo ricercar l'Iddio vostro, come voi; ed anche noi gli sacrifichiamo dal tempo di Esar-haddon, re degli Assiri, il qual ci ha fatti venir qua.

And they drew near to Zorobabel, and to the heads of families, and said to them, We will build with you; for as ye [do], we seek [to serve] our God, and we do sacrifice to him from the days of Asaradan king of Assur, who brought us hither.

3 Ma Zorobabel, e Iesua, e gli altri capi delle [famiglie] paterne d'Israele, risposero loro: Ei non vi si conviene di edificar la Casa all'Iddio nostro con noi; ma noi congiuntamente edificheremo [la Casa] al Signore Iddio d'Israele, siccome Ciro, re di Persia, ci ha comandato.

then Zorobabel, and Jesus and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel said to them, [It is] not for us and you to build a house to our God, for we ourselves will build together to the Lord our God, as Cyrus the king of the Persians commanded us.

4 Ed il popolo del paese rendeva rimesse le mani del popolo di Giuda, e lo spaventava di fabbricare.

And the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Juda, and hindered them in building,

5 Oltre a ciò davano pensione a certi consiglieri contro a' Giudei, per rompere il lor consiglio; [e questo durò] tutto il tempo di Ciro, re di Persia, e fino al regno di Dario, re di Persia.

and [continued] hiring [persons] against them, plotting to frustrate their counsel, all the days of Cyrus king of the Persians, and until the reign of Darius king of the Persians.

6 E sotto il regno di Assuero, al principio di esso, scrissero un'accusa contro agli abitanti di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.

And in the reign of Assuerus, even in the beginning of his reign, they wrote a letter against the inhabitants of Juda and Jerusalem.

7 E poi al tempo di Artaserse, Bislam, Mitredat, Tabeel, e gli altri suoi colleghi, scrissero ad Artaserse, re di Persia; e la scrittura e la lingua della lettera [era] siriaca.

And in the days of Arthasastha, Tabeel wrote peaceably to Mithradates and to the rest of his fellow-servants: the tribute-gatherer wrote to Arthasastha king of the Persians a writing in the Syrian tongue, and [the same] interpreted.

8 Rehum, presidente del consiglio, e Simsai, segretario, scrissero una lettera al re Artaserse contro a Gerusalemme, di questo tenore.

Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe wrote an epistle against Jerusalem to King Arthasastha, [saying, ]

9 Allora Rehum, presidente del consiglio, e Simsai, segretario, e gli altri lor colleghi, i Dinei, e gli Afarsatchei, i Tarpelei, gli Afarsei, gli Archevei, i Babiloni, i Susanchei, i Dehavei, gli Elamiti,

Thus has judged Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and the rest of our fellow-servants, the Dinaeans, the Apharsathachaeans, the Tarphalaeans, the Apharsaeans, the Archyaeans, the Babylonians, the Susanachaeans, Davaeans,

10 e gli altri popoli, che il grande e glorioso Osnappar avea tramutati di stanza, e fatti abitar nella città di Samaria, e gli altri di di là dal fiume, ecc. [scrissero al re Artaserse].

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Assenaphar removed, and settled them in the cities of Somoron, and the rest [of them] beyond the river.

11 (Questo è il tenor della lettera che gli mandarono.) Al re Artaserse: i tuoi servitori, gli uomini di qua dal fiume, ecc.

This [is] the purport of the letter, which they sent to him: Thy servants the men beyond the river to king Arthasastha.

12 Il re sappia che i Giudei, che son venuti d'appresso a te a noi, son giunti in Gerusalemme; [e che] riedificano quella città ribella e malvagia; e rifanno interamente le mura, ed hanno [già] racconci i fondamenti.

Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from thee to us have come to Jerusalem the rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established the foundations of it.

13 Ora sappia il re, che se questa città è riedificata, e se le sue mura son rifatte, essi non pagheranno più tributo, nè taglia, nè gabella; e così [quella città] recherà danno alle entrate reali.

Now then be it known to the king, that if that city be built up, and its walls completed, thou shalt have no tribute, neither will they pay [anything], and this injures kings.

14 Ora, conciossiachè noi siamo salariati dal palazzo, e non sia cosa conveniente a noi il vedere che il re sia schernito, perciò abbiamo mandato a fare assapere [la cosa] al re.

And it is not lawful for us to see the dishonour of the king: therefore have we sent and made known [the matter] to the king;

15 Acciocchè cerchi nel libro delle memorie de' suoi predecessori; e tu vi troverai, e conoscerai che questa città [è] una città ribella, e dannosa ai re ed alle provincie; e che già ab antico vi si fanno dentro congiure; per la qual cagione fu distrutta.

That examination may be made in thy fathers' book of record; and thou shalt find, and thou shalt know that city [is] rebellious, and does harm to kings and countries, and there are in the midst of it from very old time refuges for [runaway] slaves: therefore this city has been made desolate.

16 Noi facciamo assapere al re, che, se questa città è riedificata, e le sue mura son rifatte, la parte [de' suoi stati ch'è] di qua dal fiume, non sarà più sua.

We therefore declare to the king, that, if that city be built, and its walls be set up, thou shalt not have peace.

17 Il re mandò questa risposta: A Rehum, presidente del consiglio, ed a Simsai, segretario, ed agli altri lor colleghi, abitanti in Samaria; ed a [tutti] gli altri di di là dal fiume, salute ecc.

Then the king sent to Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and the rest of their fellow-servants who dwelt in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, [saying, ]Peace; and he says,

18 La lettera, che voi ci avete mandata, è stata spiegata, [e] letta in presenza mia.

The tribute-gatherer whom ye sent to us, has been called before me.

19 E per mio comandamento, si è cercato, e trovato che cotesta città già ab antico si solleva contro ai re; che vi si fanno ribellioni e congiure;

And a decree has been made by me, and we have examined, and found that city of old time exalts itself against kings, and that rebellions and desertions take place within it.

20 e che già vi furono re potenti in Gerusalemme, i quali signoreggiarono in tutto [il paese ch'è] di là dal fiume; e ch'erano loro pagati tributi, taglie e gabelle.

And there were powerful kings in Jerusalem, and they ruled over all the [country] beyond the river, and abundant revenues and tribute were given to them.

21 Ora [dunque] provvedete di far cessare quelle genti, acciocchè cotesta città non si riedifichi, finchè da me sia [altrimenti] ordinato;

Now therefore make a decree to stop the work of those men, and that city shall no more be built.

22 e guardatevi di far fallo in questo; perchè si lascerebbe crescere il male in detrimento dei re?

[See] that ye be careful of the decree, [not] to be remiss concerning this matter, lest at any time destruction should abound to the harm of kings.

23 Allora, tosto che il tenor delle lettere del re Artaserse fu letto in presenza di Rehum, e di Simsai, segretario, e de' lor colleghi, essi andarono prestamente in Gerusalemme a' Giudei, e li fecero cessare a mano armata.

Then the tribute-gatherer of king Arthasastha read [the letter] before Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and his fellow-servants: and they went in haste to Jerusalem and through Juda, and caused them to cease with horses and an [armed] force.

24 In quel tempo fu tralasciata l'opera della Casa di Dio, che [è] in Gerusalemme, e restò [così] tralasciata fino all'anno secondo del regno di Dario, re di Persia.

Then ceased the work of the house of God in Jerusalem, and it was at a stand until the second year of the reign of Darius king of the Persians.
