Luca 22
1 Si avvicinava la festa degli Azzimi, chiamata Pasqua,
The Feast of the Unleavened Bread, known as the Passover, was near.
2 e i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano come toglierlo di mezzo, poiché temevano il popolo.
The Chief Priest and the Teachers of the Law were looking for an opportunity of destroying Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.
3 Allora satana entrò in Giuda, detto Iscariota, che era nel numero dei Dodici.
Now Satan took possession of Judas, who was known as Iscariot, and who belonged to the Twelve;
4 Ed egli andò a discutere con i sommi sacerdoti e i capi delle guardie sul modo di consegnarlo nelle loro mani.
and he went and discussed with the Chief Priests and Officers in charge at the Temple the best way of betraying Jesus to them.
5 Essi si rallegrarono e si accordarono di dargli del denaro.
They were glad of this, and agreed to pay him.
6 Egli fu d'accordo e cercava l'occasione propizia per consegnarlo loro di nascosto dalla folla.
So Judas assented, and looked for an opportunity to betray Jesus to them, in the absence of a crowd.
7 Venne il giorno degli Azzimi, nel quale si doveva immolare la vittima di Pasqua.
When the day of the Festival of the Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lambs had to be killed,
8 Gesù mandò Pietro e Giovanni dicendo: «Andate a preparare per noi la Pasqua, perché possiamo mangiare».
Jesus sent forward Peter and John, saying to them: “Go and make preparations for our eating the Passover.”
9 Gli chiesero: «Dove vuoi che la prepariamo?».
“Where do you wish us to make preparations?” they asked.
10 Ed egli rispose: «Appena entrati in città, vi verrà incontro un uomo che porta una brocca d'acqua. Seguitelo nella casa dove entrerà
“Listen,” he answered, “when you have got into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him into whatever house he enters;
11 e direte al padrone di casa: Il Maestro ti dice: Dov'è la stanza in cui posso mangiare la Pasqua con i miei discepoli?
and you shall say to the owner of the house ‘The Teacher says to you — Where is the room where I am to eat the Passover with my disciples?’
12 Egli vi mostrerà una sala al piano superiore, grande e addobbata; là preparate».
The man will show you a large upstairs room, set out; there make preparations.”
13 Essi andarono e trovarono tutto come aveva loro detto e prepararono la Pasqua.
So Peter and John went on, and found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
14 Quando fu l'ora, prese posto a tavola e gli apostoli con lui,
When the time came, Jesus took his place at table, and the Apostles with him.
15 e disse: «Ho desiderato ardentemente di mangiare questa Pasqua con voi, prima della mia passione,
“I have most earnestly wished,” he said, “to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16 poiché vi dico: non la mangerò più, finché essa non si compia nel regno di Dio».
For I tell you that I shall not eat it again, until it has had its fulfilment in the Kingdom of God.”
17 E preso un calice, rese grazie e disse: «Prendetelo e distribuitelo tra voi,
Then, on receiving a cup, after saying the thanksgiving, he said:
18 poiché vi dico: da questo momento non berrò più del frutto della vite, finché non venga il regno di Dio».
“Take this and share it among you. For I tell you that I shall not, after to-day, drink of the juice of the grape, till the Kingdom of God has come.”
19 Poi, preso un pane, rese grazie, lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: «Questo è il mio corpo che è dato per voi; fate questo in memoria di me».
Then Jesus took some bread, and, after saying the thanksgiving, broke it and gave to them, with the words: “This is my body, [which is now to be given on your behalf. Do this in memory of me.”]
20 Allo stesso modo dopo aver cenato, prese il calice dicendo: «Questo calice è la nuova alleanza nel mio sangue, che viene versato per voi».
[And in the same way with the cup, after supper, saying: “This cup is the New Covenant made by my blood which is being poured out on your behalf. ]
21 «Ma ecco, la mano di chi mi tradisce è con me, sulla tavola.
Yet see! the hand of the man that is betraying me is beside me upon the table!
22 Il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va, secondo quanto è stabilito; ma guai a quell'uomo dal quale è tradito!».
True, the Son of Man is passing, by the way ordained for him, yet alas for that man by whom he is being betrayed!”
23 Allora essi cominciarono a domandarsi a vicenda chi di essi avrebbe fatto ciò.
Then they began questioning one another which of them it could be that was going to do this.
24 Sorse anche una discussione, chi di loro poteva esser considerato il più grande.
And a dispute arose among them as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.
25 Egli disse: «I re delle nazioni le governano, e coloro che hanno il potere su di esse si fanno chiamare benefattori.
Jesus, however, said: “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their oppressors are styled ‘Benefactors.’
26 Per voi però non sia così; ma chi è il più grande tra voi diventi come il più piccolo e chi governa come colui che serve.
But with you it must not be so. No, let the greatest among you become like the youngest, and him who leads like him who serves.
27 Infatti chi è più grande, chi sta a tavola o chi serve? Non è forse colui che sta a tavola? Eppure io sto in mezzo a voi come colui che serve.
Which is the greater — the master at the table or his servant? Is not it the master at the table? Yet I myself am among you as one who serves.
28 Voi siete quelli che avete perseverato con me nelle mie prove;
You are the men who have stood by me in my trials;
29 e io preparo per voi un regno, come il Padre l'ha preparato per me,
and, just as my Father has assigned me a Kingdom, I assign you places,
30 perché possiate mangiare e bere alla mia mensa nel mio regno e siederete in trono a giudicare le dodici tribù di Israele.
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom, and be seated upon twelve thrones as judges of the twelve tribes of Israel.
31 Simone, Simone, ecco satana vi ha cercato per vagliarvi come il grano;
Simon! Simon! listen. Satan demanded leave to sift you all like wheat,
32 ma io ho pregato per te, che non venga meno la tua fede; e tu, una volta ravveduto, conferma i tuoi fratelli».
but I prayed for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. And you, when you have returned to me, are to strengthen your Brothers.”
33 E Pietro gli disse: «Signore, con te sono pronto ad andare in prigione e alla morte».
“Master,” said Peter, “with you I am ready to go both to prison and to death.”
34 Gli rispose: «Pietro, io ti dico: non canterà oggi il gallo prima che tu per tre volte avrai negato di conoscermi».
“I tell you, Peter,” replied Jesus, “the cock will not crow to-day till you have disowned all knowledge of me three times.”
35 Poi disse: «Quando vi ho mandato senza borsa, né bisaccia, né sandali, vi è forse mancato qualcosa?». Risposero: «Nulla».
Then he said to them all: “When I sent you out as my Messengers, without either purse, or bag, or sandals, were you in need of anything?” “No; nothing,” they answered.
36 Ed egli soggiunse: «Ma ora, chi ha una borsa la prenda, e così una bisaccia; chi non ha spada, venda il mantello e ne compri una.
“Now, however,” he said, “he who has a purse must take it and his bag as well; and he who has not must sell his cloak and buy a sword.
37 Perché vi dico: deve compiersi in me questa parola della Scrittura: E fu annoverato tra i malfattori. Infatti tutto quello che mi riguarda volge al suo termine».
For, I tell you, that passage of Scripture must be fulfilled in me, which says — ‘He was counted among the godless’; indeed all that refers to me is finding its fulfilment.”
38 Ed essi dissero: «Signore, ecco qui due spade». Ma egli rispose «Basta!».
“Master,” they exclaimed, “look, here are two swords!” “Enough!” said Jesus.
39 Uscito se ne andò, come al solito, al monte degli Ulivi; anche i discepoli lo seguirono.
Jesus then went out, and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, followed by his disciples.
40 Giunto sul luogo, disse loro: «Pregate, per non entrare in tentazione».
And, when he reached the spot, he said to them: “Pray that you may not fall into temptation.”
41 Poi si allontanò da loro quasi un tiro di sasso e, inginocchiatosi, pregava:
Then he withdrew about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and began to pray.
42 «Padre, se vuoi, allontana da me questo calice! Tuttavia non sia fatta la mia, ma la tua volontà».
“Father,” he said, “if it is thy pleasure, spare me this cup; only, not my will but thine be done.”
43 Gli apparve allora un angelo dal cielo a confortarlo.
Presently there appeared to him an angel from Heaven, who strengthened him.
44 In preda all'angoscia, pregava più intensamente; e il suo sudore diventò come gocce di sangue che cadevano a terra.
And, as his anguish became intense, he prayed still more earnestly, while his sweat was like great drops of blood falling on the ground.
45 Poi, rialzatosi dalla preghiera, andò dai discepoli e li trovò che dormivano per la tristezza.
Then he rose from praying, and came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow.
46 E disse loro: «Perché dormite? Alzatevi e pregate, per non entrare in tentazione».
“Why are you asleep?” he asked them. “Rise and pray, that you may not fall into temptation.”
47 Mentre egli ancora parlava, ecco una turba di gente; li precedeva colui che si chiamava Giuda, uno dei Dodici, e si accostò a Gesù per baciarlo.
While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared in sight, led by the man called Judas, who was one of the Twelve. Judas approached Jesus, to kiss him;
48 Gesù gli disse: «Giuda, con un bacio tradisci il Figlio dell'uomo?».
on which Jesus said to him: “Judas, is it by a kiss that you betray the Son of Man?”
49 Allora quelli che eran con lui, vedendo ciò che stava per accadere, dissero: «Signore, dobbiamo colpire con la spada?».
But when those who were round Jesus saw what was going to happen, they exclaimed: “Master, shall we use our swords?”
50 E uno di loro colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli staccò l'orecchio destro.
And one of them struck the High Priest’s servant and cut off his right ear;
51 Ma Gesù intervenne dicendo: «Lasciate, basta così!». E toccandogli l'orecchio, lo guarì.
on which Jesus said: “Let me at least do this”; and, touching his ear, he healed the wound.
52 Poi Gesù disse a coloro che gli eran venuti contro, sommi sacerdoti, capi delle guardie del tempio e anziani: «Siete usciti con spade e bastoni come contro un brigante?
Then, turning to the Chief Priests and Officers in charge at the Temple and Councillors, who had come for him, he said: “Have you come out, as if after a robber, with swords and clubs?
53 Ogni giorno ero con voi nel tempio e non avete steso le mani contro di me; ma questa è la vostra ora, è l'impero delle tenebre».
When I was with you day after day in the Temple Courts, you did not lay hands on me; but now your time has come, and the power of Darkness.”
54 Dopo averlo preso, lo condussero via e lo fecero entrare nella casa del sommo sacerdote. Pietro lo seguiva da lontano.
Those who had taken Jesus prisoner took him away into the house of the High Priest. Peter followed at a distance.
55 Siccome avevano acceso un fuoco in mezzo al cortile e si erano seduti attorno, anche Pietro si sedette in mezzo a loro.
But, when they had lit a fire in the centre of the court-yard and had all sat down there, Peter seated himself in the middle of them.
56 Vedutolo seduto presso la fiamma, una serva fissandolo disse: «Anche questi era con lui».
Presently a maidservant saw him sitting near the blaze of the fire. Fixing her eyes on him, she said: “Why, this man was one of his companions!”
57 Ma egli negò dicendo: «Donna, non lo conosco!».
But Peter denied it. “I do not know him,” he replied.
58 Poco dopo un altro lo vide e disse: «Anche tu sei di loro!». Ma Pietro rispose: «No, non lo sono!».
A little while afterwards some one else — a man — saw him and said: “Why, you are one of them!” “No,” Peter said, “I am not.”
59 Passata circa un'ora, un altro insisteva: «In verità, anche questo era con lui; è anche lui un Galileo».
About an hour later another man declared positively: “This man also was certainly with him. Why, he is a Galilean!”
60 Ma Pietro disse: «O uomo, non so quello che dici». E in quell'istante, mentre ancora parlava, un gallo cantò.
But Peter said: “I do not know what you are speaking about.” Instantly, while he was still speaking, a cock crowed.
61 Allora il Signore, voltatosi, guardò Pietro, e Pietro si ricordò delle parole che il Signore gli aveva detto: «Prima che il gallo canti, oggi mi rinnegherai tre volte».
And the Master turned and looked at Peter; and Peter remembered the words that the Master had said to him — “Before a cock has crowed to-day, you will disown me three times”;
62 E, uscito, pianse amaramente.
and he went outside and wept bitterly.
63 Frattanto gli uomini che avevano in custodia Gesù lo schernivano e lo percuotevano,
The men that held Jesus kept making sport of him and beating him.
64 lo bendavano e gli dicevano: «Indovina: chi ti ha colpito?».
They blindfolded him and then questioned him. “Now play the Prophet,” they said; “who was it that struck you?”
65 E molti altri insulti dicevano contro di lui.
And they heaped many other insults on him.
66 Appena fu giorno, si riunì il consiglio degli anziani del popolo, con i sommi sacerdoti e gli scribi; lo condussero davanti al sinedrio e gli dissero:
At daybreak the National Council met — both the Chief Priests and the Teachers of the Law — and took Jesus before their High Council.
67 «Se tu sei il Cristo, diccelo». Gesù rispose: «Anche se ve lo dico, non mi crederete;
“If you are the Christ,” they said, “tell us so.” “If I tell you,” replied Jesus, “you will not believe me;
68 se vi interrogo, non mi risponderete.
and, if I question you, you will not answer.
69 Ma da questo momento starà il Figlio dell'uomo seduto alla destra della potenza di Dio ».
But from this hour ‘the Son of Man will be seated on the right hand of God Almighty.’”
70 Allora tutti esclamarono: «Tu dunque sei il Figlio di Dio?». Ed egli disse loro: «Lo dite voi stessi: io lo sono».
“Are you, then, the Son of God?” they all asked. “It is true,” answered Jesus, “I am.”
71 Risposero: «Che bisogno abbiamo ancora di testimonianza? L'abbiamo udito noi stessi dalla sua bocca».
At this they exclaimed: “Why do we want any more evidence? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!”
