Luca 14
1 Un sabato era entrato in casa di uno dei capi dei farisei per pranzare e la gente stava ad osservarlo.
It happened on the Sabbath Day when he went into the house of a certain ruler among Pharisees to take a meal, that they were watching him.
2 Davanti a lui stava un idropico.
And lo! there was in front of him a man who had dropsy.
3 Rivolgendosi ai dottori della legge e ai farisei, Gesù disse: «E' lecito o no curare di sabato?».
So Jesus questioned the lawyers and the Pharisees, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath Day or not?"
4 Ma essi tacquero. Egli lo prese per mano, lo guarì e lo congedò.
They kept silent. Then Jesus took him and healed him and let him go.
5 Poi disse: «Chi di voi, se un asino o un bue gli cade nel pozzo, non lo tirerà subito fuori in giorno di sabato?».
And to them he said, "Which of you when an ox or ass has fallen into a well, will at once pull him out on the Sabbath Day?"
6 E non potevano rispondere nulla a queste parole.
They could not answer this.
7 Osservando poi come gli invitati sceglievano i primi posti, disse loro una parabola:
He told a parable to the guests when he noticed how they began choosing the best seats. He said to them.
8 «Quando sei invitato a nozze da qualcuno, non metterti al primo posto, perché non ci sia un altro invitato più ragguardevole di te
"When you are invited by any one to a marriage-feast, do not sit down in the best seat, lest a guest more distinguished than yourself has been invited, and your host come to you and say,
9 e colui che ha invitato te e lui venga a dirti: Cedigli il posto! Allora dovrai con vergogna occupare l'ultimo posto.
"‘Give place to this man,’ and then with mortification you proceed to take the lowest place.
10 Invece quando sei invitato, và a metterti all'ultimo posto, perché venendo colui che ti ha invitato ti dica: Amico, passa più avanti. Allora ne avrai onore davanti a tutti i commensali.
"But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when your host arrives he may say to you, ‘My friend, come up higher.’ Then you will be honored before the other guest.
11 Perché chiunque si esalta sarà umiliato, e chi si umilia sarà esaltato».
"For every one who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbles himself shall be exalted."
12 Disse poi a colui che l'aveva invitato: «Quando offri un pranzo o una cena, non invitare i tuoi amici, né i tuoi fratelli, né i tuoi parenti, né i ricchi vicini, perché anch'essi non ti invitino a loro volta e tu abbia il contraccambio.
Also to his host who had invited him, he continued, saying. "When you are making a dinner-party or a supper, do not invite your friends, or your brothers, or your relatives, or your rich neighbors, lest it chance that they invite you in return, and a recompense be made by you.
13 Al contrario, quando dài un banchetto, invita poveri, storpi, zoppi, ciechi;
"But when you make a reception, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.
14 e sarai beato perché non hanno da ricambiarti. Riceverai infatti la tua ricompensa alla risurrezione dei giusti».
"Then you will be blessed, because they have no means to repay you, but you shall be paid in the Resurrection of the Just."
15 Uno dei commensali, avendo udito ciò, gli disse: «Beato chi mangerà il pane nel regno di Dio!».
One of his fellow guest who was listening to him, said to him, "Blessed are those who eat bread in the kingdom of God."
16 Gesù rispose: «Un uomo diede una grande cena e fece molti inviti.
Jesus answered. "A certain man was making a great feast to which he invited many guests.
17 All'ora della cena, mandò il suo servo a dire agli invitati: Venite, è pronto.
"At dinnertime he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’
18 Ma tutti, all'unanimità, cominciarono a scusarsi. Il primo disse: Ho comprato un campo e devo andare a vederlo; ti prego, considerami giustificato.
"And they all, without exception, proceeded to excuse themselves. The first told him. ‘I have bought a field, and must needs go and see it. Pray have me excused.’
19 Un altro disse: Ho comprato cinque paia di buoi e vado a provarli; ti prego, considerami giustificato.
"The second said. ‘I have bought five yolk of oxen and am on my way to try them. I pray that you will have me excused.’
20 Un altro disse: Ho preso moglie e perciò non posso venire.
"‘I have taken a wife,’ said the another, ‘and for that reason I am unable to come.’
21 Al suo ritorno il servo riferì tutto questo al padrone. Allora il padrone di casa, irritato, disse al servo: Esci subito per le piazze e per le vie della città e conduci qui poveri, storpi, ciechi e zoppi.
"So the slave came and presented all these answers to his master. Then the master of the house was indignant, and said to his slave. ‘Go out, quickly, into the streets and alleys of the city, and bring in hither the poor, the maimed, the blind, the lame.’
22 Il servo disse: Signore, è stato fatto come hai ordinato, ma c'è ancora posto.
"And the slave said, ‘My master, your orders have been carried out, but yet there is room.’
23 Il padrone allora disse al servo: Esci per le strade e lungo le siepi, spingili a entrare, perché la mia casa si riempia.
"Said the master to his slave. ‘Go out into the roads and the hedges, and make them come in, so that my house may be filled.
24 Perché vi dico: Nessuno di quegli uomini che erano stati invitati assaggerà la mia cena».
"‘For I tell you that not one of those invited guests shall taste my supper.’"
25 Siccome molta gente andava con lui, egli si voltò e disse:
Great crowds were along with him, and he turned to them and said.
26 «Se uno viene a me e non odia suo padre, sua madre, la moglie, i figli, i fratelli, le sorelle e perfino la propria vita, non può essere mio discepolo.
"If any one comes to me and does not hate father and his mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, yes, and his own very life also, he cannot be a disciple of mine.
27 Chi non porta la propria croce e non viene dietro di me, non può essere mio discepolo.
"Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me, cannot be a disciple of mine.
28 Chi di voi, volendo costruire una torre, non si siede prima a calcolarne la spesa, se ha i mezzi per portarla a compimento?
"Which of you who is desirous of building a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, to see if he has the means to complete it?
29 Per evitare che, se getta le fondamenta e non può finire il lavoro, tutti coloro che vedono comincino a deriderlo, dicendo:
"Lest it happen that after he has laid the foundations and is unable to complete it, all who see it shall begin to jeer at him saying,
30 Costui ha iniziato a costruire, ma non è stato capace di finire il lavoro.
"‘This fellow began to build and could not finish.’
31 Oppure quale re, partendo in guerra contro un altro re, non siede prima a esaminare se può affrontare con diecimila uomini chi gli viene incontro con ventimila?
"Or what king as he goes forth to join battle with another king in war does not sit down first and deliberate whether he can meet with ten thousand men the one who is advancing against him with twenty thousand?
32 Se no, mentre l'altro è ancora lontano, gli manda un'ambasceria per la pace.
"If he cannot, while the other king is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy to ask conditions of peace.
33 Così chiunque di voi non rinunzia a tutti i suoi averi, non può essere mio discepolo.
"Just so any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
34 Il sale è buono, ma se anche il sale perdesse il sapore, con che cosa lo si salerà?
"Salt is good, but if even the salt have lost its flavor, with what shall it be seasoned?
35 Non serve né per la terra né per il concime e così lo buttano via. Chi ha orecchi per intendere, intenda».
"It is fit neither for the land nor the dung-hill; men cast it out. He who has ears to hear let him listen to this!"
