Giosué 7
1 Gli Israeliti si resero colpevoli di violazione quanto allo sterminio: Acan, figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda, si impadronì di quanto era votato allo sterminio e allora la collera del Signore si accese contro gli Israeliti.
But the people of Israel acted unfaithfully regarding the things that were set apart for destruction. Achan son of Karmi son of Zabdi son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, took some things that were set apart for destruction, and Yahweh's anger burned against the people of Israel.
2 Giosuè inviò uomini di Gerico ad Ai, che è presso Bet-Aven, ad oriente di Betel. Disse loro: «Andate a esplorare la regione». Gli uomini andarono a esplorare Ai.
Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which was near Beth Aven, east of Bethel. He said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.
3 Poi ritornarono da Giosuè e gli dissero: «Non vada tutto il popolo; vadano all'assalto due o tremila uomini per espugnare Ai; non impegnateci tutto il popolo, perché sono pochi».
When they returned to Joshua, they said to him, “Do not send all the people up to Ai. Send only two or three thousand men to go up and attack Ai. Do not make all the people labor in battle, for they are few in number.”
4 Vi andarono allora del popolo circa tremila uomini, ma si diedero alla fuga dinanzi agli uomini di Ai.
So only about three thousand men went up from the army, but these ran away from the men of Ai.
5 Gli uomini di Ai ne uccisero circa trentasei, li inseguirono davanti alla porta fino a Sebarim e li colpirono nella discesa. Allora al popolo venne meno il cuore e si sciolse come acqua.
The men of Ai killed about thirty-six men as they pursued them from the city gate as far as to the stone quarries, and they killed them as they were going down a hill. The hearts of the people melted and became like water.
6 Giosuè si stracciò le vesti, si prostrò con la faccia a terra davanti all'arca del Signore fino alla sera e con lui gli anziani di Israele e sparsero polvere sul loro capo.
Then Joshua tore his garments. He and the elders of Israel put dust on their heads and lay facedown on the ground in front of the ark of Yahweh, remaining there until evening.
7 Giosuè esclamò: «Signore Dio, perché hai fatto passare il Giordano a questo popolo, per metterci poi nelle mani dell'Amorreo e distruggerci? Se avessimo deciso di stabilirci oltre il Giordano!
Then Joshua said, “Ah, Yahweh Lord, why have you brought this people across the Jordan at all? To give us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we made a different decision and we had stayed on the other side of the Jordan!
8 Perdonami, Signore: che posso dire, dopo che Israele ha voltato le spalle ai suoi nemici?
Lord, what can I say, after Israel has turned their backs before their enemies?
9 Lo sapranno i Cananei e tutti gli abitanti della regione, ci accerchieranno e cancelleranno il nostro nome dal paese. E che farai tu per il tuo grande nome?».
For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it. They will surround us and make the people of the earth forget our name. What will you do for your great name?”
10 Rispose il Signore a Giosuè: «Alzati, perché stai prostrato sulla faccia?
Yahweh said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying there on your face?
11 Israele ha peccato. Essi hanno trasgredito l'alleanza che avevo loro prescritto e hanno preso ciò che era votato allo sterminio: hanno rubato, hanno dissimulato e messo nei loro sacchi!
Israel has sinned. They have broken my covenant which I commanded them. They have stolen some of the things that were set apart. They have stolen and then also hidden their sin by putting what they have taken among their own belongings.
12 Gli Israeliti non potranno resistere ai loro nemici, volteranno le spalle ai loro nemici, perché sono incorsi nello sterminio. Non sarò più con voi, se non eliminerete da voi chi è incorso nello sterminio.
As a result, the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They turned their backs from their enemies because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will not be with you any more unless you destroy the things that should have been destroyed, but are still among you.
13 Orsù, santifica il popolo. Dirai: Santificatevi per domani, perché dice il Signore, Dio di Israele: Uno votato allo sterminio è in mezzo a te, Israele; tu non potrai resistere ai tuoi nemici, finché non eliminerete da voi chi è votato allo sterminio.
Get up! Consecrate the people to me and say to them, 'Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow. For Yahweh, the God of Israel says, “There are things set apart to be destroyed that are still among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove from among you all the things that were set apart to be destroyed.”
14 Vi accosterete dunque domattina secondo le vostre tribù; la tribù che il Signore avrà designato con la sorte si accosterà per famiglie e la famiglia che il Signore avrà designata si accosterà per case; la casa che il Signore avrà designata si accosterà per individui;
In the morning, you must present yourselves by your tribes. The tribe that Yahweh selects will come near by their clans. The clan that Yahweh selects must come near by each household. The household that Yahweh selects must come near one by one.
15 colui che risulterà votato allo sterminio sarà bruciato dal fuoco con quanto è suo, perché ha trasgredito l'alleanza del Signore e ha commesso un'infamia in Israele».
It will happen that the one who is selected and who has those things that were set apart for destruction, he will be burned, he and all he has, because he has broken the covenant of Yahweh and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.'”
16 Giosuè si alzò di buon mattino e fece accostare Israele secondo le sue tribù e fu designata dalla sorte la tribù di Giuda.
So, Joshua got up early in the morning and brought Israel near, tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was selected.
17 Fece accostare le famiglie di Giuda e fu designata la famiglia degli Zerachiti; fece accostare la famiglia degli Zerachiti per case e fu designato Zabdi;
Joshua brought the clans of Judah near, and the clan of the Zerahites was selected. He brought near the clan of the Zerahites person by person, and Zabdi was selected.
18 fece accostare la sua casa per individui e fu designato dalla sorte Acan, figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda.
He brought Zabdi's household near, person by person, and Achan son of Karmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, from the tribe of Judah, was selected.
19 Disse allora Giosuè ad Acan: «Figlio mio, dà gloria al Signore, Dio di Israele, e rendigli omaggio e raccontami ciò che hai fatto, non me lo nascondere».
Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, tell the truth before Yahweh, the God of Israel, and give your confession to him. Please tell me what you have done. Do not hide it from me.”
20 Rispose Acan a Giosuè: «In verità, proprio io ho peccato contro il Signore, Dio di Israele, e ho fatto questo e quest'altro.
Achan answered Joshua, “Truly, I have sinned against Yahweh, the God of Israel. This is what I did:
21 Avevo visto nel bottino un bel mantello di Sennaar, duecento sicli d'argento e un lingotto d'oro del peso di cinquanta sicli; ne sentii bramosia e li presi ed eccoli nascosti in terra in mezzo alla mia tenda e l'argento è sotto».
When I saw among the plunder a beautiful coat from Babylon, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I desired them and took them. They are hidden in the ground in the middle of my tent, and the silver is under it.”
22 Giosuè mandò allora messaggeri che corsero alla tenda, ed ecco tutto era nascosto nella tenda e l'argento era sotto.
Joshua sent messengers, who ran to the tent and there were the things. When they looked, they found them hidden in his own tent, and the silver under them.
23 Li presero dalla tenda, li portarono a Giosuè e a tutti gli Israeliti e li deposero davanti al Signore.
They took the items from the middle of the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the people of Israel. They poured them out before Yahweh.
24 Giosuè allora prese Acan di Zerach e l'argento, il mantello, il lingotto d'oro, i suoi figli, le sue figlie, il suo bue, il suo asino, le sue pecore, la sua tenda e quanto gli apparteneva. Tutto Israele lo seguiva ed egli li condusse alla valle di Acor.
Then Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan son of Zerah, and the silver, the coat, the bar of gold, his sons and daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had, and they brought them up to the Valley of Achor.
25 Giosuè disse: «Come tu hai portato sventura a noi, così il Signore oggi la porti a te!». Tutto Israele lo lapidò, li bruciarono tutti e li uccisero tutti a sassate.
Then Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? Yahweh will trouble you today.” All Israel stoned him with stones. Then they stoned the rest with stones and burned them with fire.
26 Eressero poi sul posto un gran mucchio di pietre, che esiste fino ad oggi. Il Signore allora desistette dal suo tremendo sdegno. Per questo quel luogo si chiama fino ad oggi Valle di Acor.
They set up over him a great heap of stones that is here until this day. Yahweh turned away his burning anger. Therefore the name of the place is the Valley of Achor until this present day.
