नीतिवचन 25

1 १ सुलैमान के नीतिवचन ये भी हैं; जिन्हें यहूदा के राजा हिजकिय्याह के जनों ने नकल की थी।

Also these are Proverbs of Solomon, that men of Hezekiah king of Judah transcribed: —

2 २ परमेश्वर की महिमा, गुप्त रखने में है परन्तु राजाओं की महिमा गुप्त बात के पता लगाने से होती है।

The honour of God [is] to hide a thing, And the honour of kings to search out a matter.

3 ३ स्वर्ग की ऊँचाई और पृथ्वी की गहराई और राजाओं का मन, इन तीनों का अन्त नहीं मिलता।

The heavens for height, and the earth for depth, And the heart of kings — [are] unsearchable.

4 ४ चाँदी में से मैल दूर करने पर वह सुनार के लिये काम की हो जाती है।

Take away dross from silver, And a vessel for the refiner goeth forth,

5 ५ वैसे ही, राजा के सामने से दुष्ट को निकाल देने पर उसकी गद्दी धर्म के कारण स्थिर होगी।

Take away the wicked before a king, And established in righteousness is his throne.

6 ६ राजा के सामने अपनी बड़ाई न करना और बड़े लोगों के स्थान में खड़ा न होना;

Honour not thyself before a king, And in the place of the great stand not.

7 ७ उनके लिए तुझ से यह कहना बेहतर है कि, “इधर मेरे पास आकर बैठ” ताकि प्रधानों के सम्मुख तुझे अपमानित न होना पड़े.

For better [that] he hath said to thee, 'Come thou up hither,' Than [that] he humble thee before a noble, Whom thine eyes have seen.

8 ८ जो कुछ तूने देखा है, वह जल्दी से अदालत में न ला, अन्त में जब तेरा पड़ोसी तुझे शर्मिंदा करेगा तो तू क्या करेगा?

Go not forth to strive, haste, turn, What dost thou in its latter end, When thy neighbour causeth thee to blush?

9 ९ अपने पड़ोसी के साथ वाद-विवाद एकान्त में करना और पराए का भेद न खोलना;

Thy cause plead with thy neighbour, And the secret counsel of another reveal not,

10 १० ऐसा न हो कि सुननेवाला तेरी भी निन्दा करे, और तेरी निन्दा बनी रहे।

Lest the hearer put thee to shame, And thine evil report turn not back.

11 ११ जैसे चाँदी की टोकरियों में सोने के सेब हों, वैसे ही ठीक समय पर कहा हुआ वचन होता है।

Apples of gold in imagery of silver, [Is] the word spoken at its fit times.

12 १२ जैसे सोने का नत्थ और कुन्दन का जेवर अच्छा लगता है, वैसे ही माननेवाले के कान में बुद्धिमान की डाँट भी अच्छी लगती है।

A ring of gold, and an ornament of pure gold, [Is] the wise reprover to an attentive ear.

13 १३ जैसे कटनी के समय बर्फ की ठण्ड से, वैसा ही विश्वासयोग्य दूत से भी, भेजनेवालों का जी ठंडा होता है।

As a vessel of snow in a day of harvest, [So is] a faithful ambassador to those sending him, And the soul of his masters he refresheth.

14 १४ जैसे बादल और पवन बिना वृष्टि निर्लाभ होते हैं, वैसे ही झूठ-मूठ दान देनेवाले का बड़ाई मारना होता है।

Clouds and wind, and rain there is none, [Is] a man boasting himself in a false gift.

15 १५ धीरज धरने से न्यायी मनाया जाता है, और कोमल वचन हड्डी को भी तोड़ डालता है।

By long-suffering is a ruler persuaded, And a soft tongue breaketh a bone.

16 १६ क्या तूने मधु पाया? तो जितना तेरे लिये ठीक हो उतना ही खाना, ऐसा न हो कि अधिक खाकर उसे उगल दे।

Honey thou hast found — eat thy sufficiency, Lest thou be satiated [with] it, and hast vomited it.

17 १७ अपने पड़ोसी के घर में बारम्बार जाने से अपने पाँव को रोक, ऐसा न हो कि वह खिन्न होकर घृणा करने लगे।

Withdraw thy foot from thy neighbour's house, Lest he be satiated [with] thee, and have hated thee.

18 १८ जो किसी के विरुद्ध झूठी साक्षी देता है, वह मानो हथौड़ा और तलवार और पैना तीर है।

A maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow, [Is] the man testifying against his neighbour a false testimony.

19 १९ विपत्ति के समय विश्वासघाती का भरोसा, टूटे हुए दाँत या उखड़े पाँव के समान है।

A bad tooth, and a tottering foot, [Is] the confidence of the treacherous in a day of adversity.

20 २० जैसा जाड़े के दिनों में किसी का वस्त्र उतारना या सज्जी पर सिरका डालना होता है, वैसा ही उदास मनवाले के सामने गीत गाना होता है।

Whoso is taking away a garment in a cold day, [Is as] vinegar on nitre, And a singer of songs on a sad heart.

21 २१ यदि तेरा बैरी भूखा हो तो उसको रोटी खिलाना; और यदि वह प्यासा हो तो उसे पानी पिलाना;

If he who is hating thee doth hunger, cause him to eat bread, And if he thirst, cause him to drink water.

22 २२ क्योंकि इस रीति तू उसके सिर पर अंगारे डालेगा, और यहोवा तुझे इसका फल देगा।

For coals thou art putting on his head, And Jehovah giveth recompense to thee.

23 २३ जैसे उत्तरी वायु वर्षा को लाती है, वैसे ही चुगली करने से मुख पर क्रोध छा जाता है।

A north wind bringeth forth rain, And a secret tongue — indignant faces.

24 २४ लम्बे चौड़े घर में झगड़ालू पत्नी के संग रहने से छत के कोने पर रहना उत्तम है।

Better to sit on a corner of a roof, Than [with] a woman of contentions, and a house of company.

25 २५ दूर देश से शुभ सन्देश, प्यासे के लिए ठंडे पानी के समान है।

[As] cold waters for a weary soul, So [is] a good report from a far country.

26 २६ जो धर्मी दुष्ट के कहने में आता है, वह खराब जल-स्रोत और बिगड़े हुए कुण्ड के समान है।

A spring troubled, and a fountain corrupt, [Is] the righteous falling before the wicked.

27 २७ जैसे बहुत मधु खाना अच्छा नहीं, वैसे ही आत्मप्रशंसा करना भी अच्छा नहीं।

The eating of much honey is not good, Nor a searching out of one's own honour — honour.

28 २८ जिसकी आत्मा वश में नहीं वह ऐसे नगर के समान है जिसकी शहरपनाह घेराव करके तोड़ दी गई हो।

A city broken down without walls, [Is] a man without restraint over his spirit!
