नीतिवचन 24

1 १ बुरे लोगों के विषय में डाह न करना, और न उसकी संगति की चाह रखना;

Be not thou envious of wicked men, And desire not to be with them!

2 २ क्योंकि वे उपद्रव सोचते रहते हैं, और उनके मुँह से दुष्टता की बात निकलती है।

For their heart studieth destruction, And their lips speak mischief.

3 ३ घर बुद्धि से बनता है, और समझ के द्वारा स्थिर होता है।

Through wisdom is a house builded, And by understanding is it established;

4 ४ ज्ञान के द्वारा कोठरियाँ सब प्रकार की बहुमूल्य और मनोहर वस्तुओं से भर जाती हैं।

Yea, by knowledge are the chambers filled With all precious and goodly substance.

5 ५ वीर पुरुष बलवान होता है, परन्तु ज्ञानी व्यक्ति बलवान पुरुष से बेहतर है।

The wise man is strong; Yea, the man of understanding establisheth his strength.

6 ६ इसलिए जब तू युद्ध करे, तब युक्ति के साथ करना, विजय बहुत से मंत्रियों के द्वारा प्राप्त होती है।

For by wise counsel shalt thou make war, And by the multitude of counsellors cometh success.

7 ७ बुद्धि इतने ऊँचे पर है कि मूर्ख उसे पा नहीं सकता; वह सभा में अपना मुँह खोल नहीं सकता।

Wisdom is too high for the fool; He openeth not his mouth at the gate.

8 ८ जो सोच विचार के बुराई करता है, उसको लोग दुष्ट कहते हैं।

He that deviseth to do evil Shall be called mischief-master.

9 ९ मूर्खता का विचार भी पाप है, और ठट्ठा करनेवाले से मनुष्य घृणा करते हैं।

The purpose of folly is sin; And a scoffer is an abomination to men.

10 १० यदि तू विपत्ति के समय साहस छोड़ दे, तो तेरी शक्ति बहुत कम है।

If thy spirit faint in the day of adversity, Faint will be thy strength.

11 ११ जो मार डाले जाने के लिये घसीटे जाते हैं उनको छुड़ा; और जो घात किए जाने को हैं उन्हें रोक।

Deliver thou those who are dragged to death, And those who totter to the slaughter, —O keep them back!

12 १२ यदि तू कहे, कि देख मैं इसको जानता न था, तो क्या मन का जाँचनेवाला इसे नहीं समझता? और क्या तेरे प्राणों का रक्षक इसे नहीं जानता? और क्या वह हर एक मनुष्य के काम का फल उसे न देगा?

If thou sayst, “Behold, we knew it not!” Doth not he that weigheth the heart observe it? Yea, he that keepeth thy soul knoweth it. And he will render to every man according to his works.

13 १३ हे मेरे पुत्र तू मधु खा, क्योंकि वह अच्छा है, और मधु का छत्ता भी, क्योंकि वह तेरे मुँह में मीठा लगेगा।

Eat honey, my son, for it is good, And the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste;

14 १४ इसी रीति बुद्धि भी तुझे वैसी ही मीठी लगेगी; यदि तू उसे पा जाए तो अन्त में उसका फल भी मिलेगा, और तेरी आशा न टूटेगी।

So learn thou wisdom for thy soul! When thou hast found it, there shall be a reward, And thy expectation shall not be cut off.

15 १५ तू दुष्ट के समान धर्मी के निवास को नष्ट करने के लिये घात में न बैठ; और उसके विश्रामस्थान को मत उजाड़;

Plot not, O wicked man! against the habitation of the righteous; Spoil not his resting-place!

16 १६ क्योंकि धर्मी चाहे सात बार गिरे तो भी उठ खड़ा होता है; परन्तु दुष्ट लोग विपत्ति में गिरकर पड़े ही रहते हैं।

For though the righteous fall seven times, yet shall he rise up again; But the wicked shall fall into mischief.

17 १७ जब तेरा शत्रु गिर जाए तब तू आनन्दित न हो, और जब वह ठोकर खाए, तब तेरा मन मगन न हो।

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, And let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth;

18 १८ कहीं ऐसा न हो कि यहोवा यह देखकर अप्रसन्न हो और अपना क्रोध उस पर से हटा ले।

Lest the LORD see, and it displease him, And he turn away his anger from him.

19 १९ कुकर्मियों के कारण मत कुढ़, दुष्ट लोगों के कारण डाह न कर;

Fret not thyself on account of evil men, Neither be thou envious of the wicked;

20 २० क्योंकि बुरे मनुष्य को अन्त में कुछ फल न मिलेगा, दुष्टों का दीपक बुझा दिया जाएगा।

For there shall be no posterity to the evil man; The lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

21 २१ हे मेरे पुत्र, यहोवा और राजा दोनों का भय मानना; और उनके विरुद्ध बलवा करनेवालों के साथ न मिलना;

My son, fear thou the LORD and the king; And mingle not with them that are given to change!

22 २२ क्योंकि उन पर विपत्ति अचानक आ पड़ेगी, और दोनों की ओर से आनेवाली विपत्ति को कौन जानता है?

For their calamity shall rise up suddenly, And their ruin, coming from them both, in a moment.

23 २३ बुद्धिमानों के वचन यह भी हैं। न्याय में पक्षपात करना, किसी भी रीति से अच्छा नहीं।

These also are words of the wise. It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

24 २४ जो दुष्ट से कहता है कि तू निर्दोष है, उसको तो हर समाज के लोग श्राप देते और जाति-जाति के लोग धमकी देते हैं;

He that saith to the wicked, “Thou art righteous,” Him shall the people curse; Nations shall abhor him.

25 २५ परन्तु जो लोग दुष्ट को डाँटते हैं उनका भला होता है, और उत्तम से उत्तम आशीर्वाद उन पर आता है।

But it shall be well with them that punish him, And the blessing of prosperity shall come upon them.

26 २६ जो सीधा उत्तर देता है, वह होठों को चूमता है।

He that giveth a right answer Kisseth the lips.

27 २७ अपना बाहर का काम-काज ठीक करना, और अपने लिए खेत को भी तैयार कर लेना; उसके बाद अपना घर बनाना।

Arrange thy work without, And prepare it in thy field: Afterwards thou mayst build thy house.

28 २८ व्यर्थ अपने पड़ोसी के विरुद्ध साक्षी न देना, और न उसको फुसलाना।

Be not a witness without cause against thy neighbor, And deceive not with thy lips.

29 २९ मत कह, “जैसा उसने मेरे साथ किया वैसा ही मैं भी उसके साथ करूँगा; और उसको उसके काम के अनुसार पलटा दूँगा।”

Say not, “As he hath done to me, So will I do to him; I will render to the man according to his doings.”

30 ३० मैं आलसी के खेत के पास से और निर्बुद्धि मनुष्य की दाख की बारी के पास होकर जाता था,

I passed by the field of the slothful, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding,

31 ३१ तो क्या देखा, कि वहाँ सब कहीं कटीले पेड़ भर गए हैं; और वह बिच्छू पौधों से ढँक गई है, और उसके पत्थर का बाड़ा गिर गया है।

And, lo! it was all overgrown with thorns, And the face thereof was covered with nettles, And the stone wall thereof was broken down.

32 ३२ तब मैंने देखा और उस पर ध्यानपूर्वक विचार किया; हाँ मैंने देखकर शिक्षा प्राप्त की।

Then I saw, and considered it well; I looked upon it. and received instruction.

33 ३३ छोटी सी नींद, एक और झपकी, थोड़ी देर हाथ पर हाथ रख के लेटे रहना,

“A little sleep, a little slumber! A little folding of the hands to rest!”

34 ३४ तब तेरा कंगालपन डाकू के समान, और तेरी घटी हथियार-बन्द के समान आ पड़ेगी।

So shall poverty come upon thee like a highwayman; Yea, want like an armed man.
