| משלי שלמה בן חכם ישמח אב ובן כסיל תוגת אמו׃ | 1 |
The Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father, But a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
| לא יועילו אוצרות רשע וצדקה תציל ממות׃ | 2 |
Treasures of wickedness do not profit; But righteousness delivereth from death.
| לא ירעיב יהוה נפש צדיק והות רשעים יהדף׃ | 3 |
The LORD will not suffer the righteous to famish; But he disappointeth the craving of the wicked.
| ראש עשה כף רמיה ויד חרוצים תעשיר׃ | 4 |
He that worketh with a slack hand becometh poor; But the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
| אגר בקיץ בן משכיל נרדם בקציר בן מביש׃ | 5 |
He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; But he that sleepeth in harvest is a son causing shame.
| ברכות לראש צדיק ופי רשעים יכסה חמס׃ | 6 |
Blessings are upon the head of the just; But the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence.
| זכר צדיק לברכה ושם רשעים ירקב׃ | 7 |
The memory of the righteous man shall be blessed; But the name of the wicked shall rot.
| חכם לב יקח מצות ואויל שפתים ילבט׃ | 8 |
He who is wise in heart receiveth precepts; But the foolish talker falleth headlong.
| הולך בתם ילך בטח ומעקש דרכיו יודע׃ | 9 |
He that walketh uprightly walketh securely; But he that perverteth his ways shall be punished.
| קרץ עין יתן עצבת ואויל שפתים ילבט׃ | 10 |
He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow; And a foolish talker falleth headlong.
| מקור חיים פי צדיק ופי רשעים יכסה חמס׃ | 11 |
The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; But the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence.
| שנאה תעורר מדנים ועל כל פשעים תכסה אהבה׃ | 12 |
Hatred stirreth up strife; But love covereth all offences.
| בשפתי נבון תמצא חכמה ושבט לגו חסר לב׃ | 13 |
Upon the lips of a man of understanding wisdom is found; But a rod is for the back of him that lacketh understanding.
| חכמים יצפנו דעת ופי אויל מחתה קרבה׃ | 14 |
Wise men treasure up knowledge; But the mouth of the foolish is destruction close at hand.
| הון עשיר קרית עזו מחתת דלים רישם׃ | 15 |
The rich man's wealth is his strong city; The destruction of the poor is their poverty.
| פעלת צדיק לחיים תבואת רשע לחטאת׃ | 16 |
The earnings of the righteous minister to life; The revenues of the wicked, to sin.
| ארח לחיים שומר מוסר ועוזב תוכחת מתעה׃ | 17 |
He that keepeth instruction is in the path of life; But he that refuseth reproof goeth astray.
| מכסה שנאה שפתי שקר ומוצא דבה הוא כסיל׃ | 18 |
He that hideth hatred hath lying lips; And he that uttereth slander is a fool.
| ברב דברים לא יחדל פשע וחשך שפתיו משכיל׃ | 19 |
In the multitude of words there wanteth not offence; But he who restraineth his lips is wise.
| כסף נבחר לשון צדיק לב רשעים כמעט׃ | 20 |
The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver; The understanding of the wicked is of little worth.
| שפתי צדיק ירעו רבים ואוילים בחסר לב ימותו׃ | 21 |
The lips of the righteous feed many; But fools die through want of wisdom.
| ברכת יהוה היא תעשיר ולא יוסף עצב עמה׃ | 22 |
It is the blessing of the LORD that maketh rich, And he addeth no sorrow with it.
| כשחוק לכסיל עשות זמה וחכמה לאיש תבונה׃ | 23 |
It is as sport to a fool to do mischief; But a man of understanding hath wisdom.
| מגורת רשע היא תבואנו ותאות צדיקים יתן׃ | 24 |
The fear of the wicked shall come upon him; But the desire of the righteous shall be granted.
| כעבור סופה ואין רשע וצדיק יסוד עולם׃ | 25 |
When the whirlwind passeth by, the wicked is no more; But the righteous is an everlasting foundation.
| כחמץ לשנים וכעשן לעינים כן העצל לשלחיו׃ | 26 |
As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, So is the sluggard to them that send him.
| יראת יהוה תוסיף ימים ושנות רשעים תקצרנה׃ | 27 |
The fear of the LORD prolongeth life; But the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
| תוחלת צדיקים שמחה ותקות רשעים תאבד׃ | 28 |
The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: But the expectation of the wicked shall come to nothing.
| מעוז לתם דרך יהוה ומחתה לפעלי און׃ | 29 |
The way of the LORD is a stronghold for the upright, But destruction for those who do iniquity.
| צדיק לעולם בל ימוט ורשעים לא ישכנו ארץ׃ | 30 |
The righteous shall never be moved; But the wicked shall not dwell in the land.
| פי צדיק ינוב חכמה ולשון תהפכות תכרת׃ | 31 |
The mouth of the righteous man yieldeth wisdom; But the perverse tongue shall be cut off.
| שפתי צדיק ידעון רצון ופי רשעים תהפכות׃ | 32 |
The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable; But the mouth of the wicked what is perverse.
